I am so glad to have been able to grow up when he was at the top of his game. What a colorful character. I think of Ken Harrelson of the Indians but Mark truly loved the game and made the game a joy to watch
"Never in my 37 years of baseball have I seen a player like him, and never will I again. My gosh, I don't know why we don't see more people like Mark Fidrych. He was what he was. All natural. So hyper, so uninhibited. A minute after he came into my office he'd have one cheek of his butt on the corner of my desk. Before you knew it, he'd be lying on my desk, his head resting in one hand, the other hand gesturing in the air." - Former Tigers GM Jim Campbell
I was 9 in 1976 when I was able to go to my first game at Tiger Stadium. The Bird was pitching that game. We had box seats a few rows from the Tiger bullpen. Bill Freehan was warming The Bird up before the came and I can still remember the phhhht sound of the ball cutting through the air. Freehan said hi to me and it was as if the Burning Bush had spoken to me. Mark got shelled by Milwaukee in that game, but I had a great time anyway. R.I.P. Mark. Your the MVP in God's baseball league now.
One of The Real & becoming extinct individuals.I met Mark a few times in my friend Butch's Eng.Office in Northborough Mark treated me like we had been friends
Forever.Butch would say he's "The BIRD" he's "The BIRD" I new nothing DuH !since I didn't follow Baseball Only Now am i learning how Respected & popular Mark was..Mark & Butch were tight.Unbelievably Mark Passed on April 13, 09 & My Good Friend Butch on May 1, 09 Both Butch & Mark were" Top of The Top" God Speed my most cherished Friends
Great Video. I grew up in the town where Mark Fidrych grew up, and sadly died. He was a very charasmatic man. Everybody in town knew him. He has been missed very much.
I also think it kind of sucks that on the day The Tigers chose to honor Mark's memory,a true Tiger Legend, the day was devoted to the memory of someone else, not even a Tiger.

Come on Detroit. Do right by The Bird. The sweet kid who brought hope to that miserable town for one glorious year in 1976.
Thank you for this video. As a lifelong baseball fan I can't think of a player more inspirational than Mark Fidrych. Today baseball is full of ego maniacs who don't enjoy baseball as much as the things they can buy with their money, but there's no doubt Fidrych loved every minute of his all too short career. I pray every day that a player will be inspired by him and bring that kind of passion back to the game.
you said it perfectly. The 70's and part of the 80's were the last time that athletes played for the pure love of the game and to win a title. Nowadays, with all the money they're paid, they could care less if their team finishes first or in last place. The Birds team didn't make the playoff in his magical year of 1976, but every game Mark Fidrych pitched had the excitment of a 7th game of the World Series..............
My childhood hero. A beautiful human being. Just sheer love for the game. Never who even think he'd do anything to hurt another.

Ah, The Bird!
I remember seeing him on TV back in 1976 when I was in Flint, Michigan!
Sad to hear he died at only 54 years old!

I think The Tigers should retire
Mark's #20.
