terrible version - maddix is shite and brown's singing is awful. Lazy choice for Warchild too. radiohead and manics contributions were much better. No reni - no heartbeat - should have called it a day when he left.

The lyric duty was pretty split on the first album. John wrote the chorus to "She Bangs the Drums" so I think that trumps anything Ian did.

And John wrote the lyrics to "Love Spreads," the best song they ever did.

This means that Ian contributed to every song and the only way he could have done this is with lyrics. The lyrics for she bangs the drums chorus are 'have you seen, her have you heard, the ways she plays there are no words to describe the way i feel'. Completely average. Whereas Ian writes lyrics like: 'Your tounge is far too long, I Don't like the way it sucks and slurps upon my every word'

I have the album here now ALSO, and it says: "All songs Written by Squire except 'Daybreak' Written by Brown/Mounfield/Squire/Wren, 'Begging You' Written by Squire/Brown and 'Straight to the Man Written by Brown.

I never got the slating of Robbie. Sure, there's only one Reni, granted, and there have been fewer drummers in the history of music who have been any better than Reni, but Robbie is still a good drummer in himself. Just enjoy this great version of a Roses classic instead of slagging off someone who clearly had a tough job replacing Reni.

The Roses, as musicians (i.e., Reni, Mani & Squire), were as strong & cohesive a unit as nearly any group in the history of R'n'R. Unfortunately, as strong a "frontman" as Ian Brown is, & as influential as he's been (e.g., Liam Gallagher & Richard Ashcroft, 2 vastly better singers), he's really a crappy singer. Clips of the Roses live repeatedly bear this out. Frankly, I'd love to hear the core band play - even if it's entirely new material - with Liam out front. Now that'd be great!

reni + mani = what the roses were about for me. Second Coming, there's a good, but far too conventional drummer, and the link Mani and Reni had is gone. you put John Squire, who despite what people say is too me just a pretty good guitarist who likes pentatonic scales too much, in a high position and you get a load of boring rock music. I feel pretty bad for Mani, to be honest.
