"Too speedy"?! Firstly, the film footage shows the exposure time was too slow creating the jerky, quickened movements of old film. Secondly, this take is from one of the most impassioned moments of the performance. She is a great actress, not afraid of gesture, nor suffering from "naturalism". She was neither too big, nor small, only and always TRUE in her acting choices.

Al momento dell'aria "numi venite a me" la Callas inginocchiata terra batteva i pugni sul pavimento....Minotis il regista greco le chiese :"perche' questo movimento?" lei rispose .....moi viene naturale. Minotis le disse che era lo stesso movimento che era rappresentato sui vasi dell'antica grecia per richiamare gli dei inferi: Credo che questo spieghi tante cose.......Grazie Maria

Oh dear god how I wish there was a complete filmed version of Callas in this role! I've often wondered if someone could create a "movie" of Medea with Callas, a kind of realistic animation, starting with what films and stills exist, using the best recorded sound versions, and creating a complete Callas performance. Surely there is someone out there who, with computer assisted technology, could make this a truly believable & memorable experience.

The speedyness of Callas' movement works with the expression that she is trying to create : Medea's a charmer, she's crafty, slithers through her machinations like a viper!

She manipulates, casting spells even on us who watch her -as reflected by the way she manipulates the fabric nervously in her fingers and yet with a determined precission to control it - to be in total control. every gesture has a reason behind it; She did have the advantage of being a Greek woman, truth must be said!
