Of course this is great music, but I love the video. Paul F. Tompkins, Tom Scharpling, John Hodgman... I love how Ted is involved with the alt comedy scene. "He died because he didn't believe in the power of punk" haha. The end is great. I saw TL/RX last night and their performance is sorta similar to that musical.
@ybrik222 No, the city. They played at this free concert the city hosts in the summer called "New Music Mondays", although this being in Chicago the musical would be fitting, no?
What the hell did this video have to do with the song? I was looking forward to a really good political video....or at least something that references the lyrics....great song...great band....but an still wondering about the connection between the Video and the Song....someone want to fill me in????
@amrichter357 Lookout became a pretty poorly run label that wasn't paying its bands (Screeching Weasel, Avail, Neurosis, Pansy Division, Enemy You, Blatz, Filth, the Criminals, and the Riverdales all had problems getting royalty payments, too). Green Day had nothing to do with running Lookout into the ground... their music isn't something I'm interested in but they weren't responsible for keeping Lookout afloat.
@amrichter357 the way GD made their money and money for Lookout seems more than fair. They honored a handshake deal and put up with years of, well, theft, basically. Livermore was gone in 97 i think and the label just kept screwing up until GD took their records back. This isn't at all like Butthole Surfers and Touch & GO or ....Trail of Dead and Merge. Lookout ran itself into the ground and screwed over all it's bands--just b/c GD could afford to let it happen doesn't make it okay.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists,Tom Scharpling, Paul F. Tompkins, Julie Klausner, John Hodgman, Terre T, AP Mike, Therese, the guy from Titus Andronicus....am I missing someone?
Check out “Shy,” the new song from Lisa Tucker (American Idol Top 10 Finalist, BET’s The Game, Nickelodeons Zoey 101) through Lisa’sLullaby channel! Be the first to hear it!
The beach ball is pretty funny; I don't know if that's a thing, but the two Ted Leo shows I've been to both involved kids throwing beach balls on stage incessantly.
Paul F. Thompkins and John Hodgeman are both funny, and I'm a fan of both. Green Day is obviously targeted in this video. I'm no fan of Green Day's music, but they support their local music community in Berkeley / Oakland, donating a sound system to historic 924 Gilman (their starting place) and more. Ted Leo is hanging out in L.A. with celebrities, mocking those with greater success, to pander to haters. Who is "cheap" now, "Ted"?
@sewage666 I think he's not just targeting Green Day, but rather the whole movement of cheap Broadway shows in the vein of We Will Rock You, Rock of the Ages, and others that started with the lamentable Mamma Mia.
@sewage666 Dude the way these guys are all friends including the director is because of a little Free-form radio station show on WFMU called The Best Show with Tom Scharpling on which most of the cameos in the video are frequent guests. So to each other they aren't "celebrities" but good friends. So yeah. And I'm sure there are plenty of interviews online explaining their reasons for this joke.
Probably the best music video that I've seen in years. Not a single bad moment in it. Ted, the Pharmacists, and Tom Scharpling killed it. All involved killed it, actually.

@righthand3d Agreed, but GD was the nail in the coffin. And painting them as sell-outs who are interested only in the money is fair.
