It trips how a song of this caliber from the 80's is NOT synthesized. Show's the true talent of musicians, and the ability of Mark King to produce a fast tempo bass rythym. That "pop and slap" technique is just sick with it. It seems to me to create an almost seamless bass rythym that you would expect w/ synthesizer... Very cool.
Besides you can't knock a video w/ an AC Cobra in it!! Haha! ;)
freaky, agreed. Although with Obama it was the blue lips that creeped me out. However after the last 8 years , I figured a Harvard educated lawyer with a command of the English language was good enough for me. Go Barrack!
You're right. The lips are kinda strange looking. But he has a sincere and confident smile. Whenever Mccain smiled, he looked like he was getting an enema. And Bush's half-witted rich-boy smirk will not be missed!
egotrippin, no offence as I've always loved the song, but have you taken a close look at the lead singer. He is one ugly, greasy haired, frog mouthed mother fuc*er. If you're basing your relationships on this guys looks, I suggest you buy better eye glasses.
Love this song. Anybody know what the theme of this video about? It seemed to me that the lead singer plays the bad guy whenever he dresses up like a killer clown in this video. I don't know. :)
The lead singer in this band used to haunt my dreams when I was young!! I was in my twenties when this song was released and I fell so hard for him it was crazy!!!!!Funny but i still base all my relationships on this guy like who looks like him or who i think best captures his essence!!!
saw level 42 at the Royal Albert Hall, London last night.. they were amazing and the crowd went wild when they played this song!! this song is much better live youve gotta hear it!!
This is one of my favorite 80's jams. Yes, I did get out of the car in the library parking lot and dance to it while waiting for my son! Clean fun, nothing wrong with it even if your in your 40's!
Ah, this takes me back! Was the summer beween high school in college. Level 42 was one of the most underrated groups at the time and hit the airwaves too soon. The CD, World Machine, is excellent and timeless. Also, my fellow man has to think of that one girl where there really was something about her! Those were the days!
Reminds me of lying on the beach in Aberystwyth staring up at the moon and stars then coming to and realising that I wasn't on the beach afterall but on the floor in the Ship & Castle after too many magic mushrooms
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. It always will reminds me of my tour of duty in England years ago while serving in the US Air Force. It is and will always be one of my all time favorites.
Were these guys more famous in the UK than in the US? Because this is the only song I can remember being played on US radio (and I love this song). Makes me think I should check out their other work.
Its a pretty cool video I remember from my HS days back in the 80's. If you ever see "Excalibur" the women in this video is the same who played Queen Guenivere in the movie...

The fool or clown in the video represents the side of us that sabatages our relationships by the "foolish ways" we conduct ourselves. In the video where the man runs out to appologize to his girl we see the clown turn with a concerned look on his face. Afraid that the man is going to redeem himself (Confront his foolish ways). A brilliant video imho.
I think the clown represents the singers curse toward the woman and her new relationships. She fucked him over and the karmic residue has spilled over to her new guys. Basically the bullshit that she used to screw her relationship with the singer is coming back to bite her on the ass. Thats why he's laughing at her. Until she deals with her internal demons every relationship is doomed.
Yeah thats another way to look at it too. I was also thinking that he could be a trickster archetype. In alot of myths the Trickster is the one that forces people to face a dilemma that they do not want to face. Thats why he laughs at people because we cant see our foolishness while he can. Eventually if we ignore him to for to long then he becomes darker in his tempermant. He goes from laughing to roaring. We can ignore our demons for only so long.
Damn u hit the needle on the head with that point! You can only run for so long, u can only ignore for so long. Whats hiding is found, whats buried is uncovered......
This song has everything come together. Insightful lyrics, tight harmonies, impeccable melodies, and killer rhythm. Qualities conspicuously lacking from a LOT of today's tunes.
song still gives me chills after all of these years. level 42's got a huge collection of music -- unfortunately, most of their other videos (with the exception of a few) are horribly produced and terribly cheesy.
L42 would have gotten forward one album, much less 26 years (in various incarnations), without either Mike's falsetto/tenor vox or at keast the spectre of them. His and Mike's vocals and Mark's bass are THE essential elements in the band. It's the same reason why Daryl Hall had only had only one big chart song in the US from his four solo albums, even though he dominates almost all Hall and Oates songs.
generally speaking, mike had a lot more vocal exposure in the early albums. once we got up to the later albums (Staring at the Sun, Guaranteed and finally Retroglide), it's like Mike's lead vocals are scarce.
