Is that actaully a large group of people holding colored boards and changing the picture ? As an American , I'm very impressed. it seems that the North Koreans do this better than anyone.
Oh I dunno. We did pretty good at the 1984 Olympic Opening Ceremonies with the flags of all nations card stunt? And those were done with audience members. I was there and was one of the herald trumpeters. If the N.Koreans do anything well it's OBEY their "great leader" who also instantly executes anyone trying to escape or those that try to help them escape. N.Korea sucks!!
It is good to have disciplined mind and body and pure heart! You can say these are poor kids if they grow up to be killers, robberies, rappers, or no good for society - BUT, these kids are not going to be one of these worse humanbeings so, they are rich instead of poor.
Suffering is never beautiful. I couldn't have said it better myself. As talented as these individuals may be, it's all part of the DPRK government's plan to put a beautiful face on a horrible and oppressive regime! ONE FREE KOREA!
i think they should drop the dictatorship and the south should drop the capitalism and they should unite under a wonderful democratic socialist government
Look at the language alone, it is the most sophisticated advancement in linguistics of all the languages in the world. Not everything is a simple as good and bad. So much more complex and yet also very simple underneath.
If they don't do this their entire family will be locked up in in a prison. People die all the time trying to escape from that hellish life. God help those poor souls and hopefully one day they will be free to choose weather or not they do these gymnastics.
An incredible performance ,thanks for posting this video. Those children have so much talent in them ,they must have gone through severe pain while doing those moves ,MAY GOD BLESS THEM AND GIVE THEM LONG LIFE.
Let's all sit in the stadium doing the wave! Then turn around and attack this. Politics aside, this is beautiful. And because you do not choose to live their life, be thankful for where you live. It isn't ours to decide how others should, only to help those who decide they don't want to anymore. Think of this as synchronized swimming if it helps.
I sure as hell would, I'd blow your fuckin' head off first! Where I live, they let have guns. Puppets are puppets no matter who is pulling the strings. Don't be so sanctimonious, your line is being jerked just like everyone else.
Not to this extream. I still have a choice of doing what I want. I dont have to work if I dont want to. I can also live on the street and starve because of it. I can watch the media and let them feed me lies but I choose not to. They also have a choice but untill they see that choice theres nothing that any of us can do. I hope that murdering dick head of a leader dies a horrid death soon.
I agree there, but I don't think it is up to us to expedite his demise. It is up to the people of a nation to decide when their "ruler" has gone too far, not outside forces. Believe me, they see it, they just aren't ready to change it yet. When they are, THEN we should support their efforts. For now, we must stand back and shake our heads. But still see that there is beauty in their culture.
You ever seen an ass? You can lead him with a carrot, but you'll never push him along. I hate suffering as well, but what I see as suffering would appear as something else to someone from another perspective. Who are we to judge for them? We did that already and now look where we are. If someone asks for your help, you must provide it. If they do not, it may be they don't want it.
I don't like the turn toward politics this comment thread has made. North Korean Mass Games are an artform, entirely separate from the subjects of government, economics, international relations, etc. :(
Not entirely. The mass games are all about giving up individuality, and subjugating your personal desires for the good of the overall collective. This is the ideology of the Workers' Party of Korea, and something that I would argue is demonstrated very strongly in these fantastic shows.
I have a feeling this is far from slave labor. It's most likely an honor to be a part of. America does the same thing but in different forms. How many people spend an extra 5000 on a car for some extra cupholders and doodads when they could give that money to a starving family? Many.
NK may be a failure.. they may starve their own people and stuff.. but at least they dont go out and conquer the world for fun! oh yeah.. and wat cost? the millions of blood of non Americans.. yup.. which is better? starve ur own people for a good show? or kill people of different countries for oil and pride??
Neither the Great Pyramids of Egypt nor the Roman Colosseum have been built without slave labor. Although I may not agree with the means used to create them, I marvel at their beauty, just as I do with the North Korean Mass Games, a modern day world wonder.
All of you Eurotrash Socialists and American "progressives" who laud North Korea... live in North Korea for six months and then live in South Korea for six months.
Absolutely breath-taking. I would visit North Korea just to see this event.
People criticising this have no idea how many thousands of people are involved in it, all perfectly coordinated. The "screen" you see in the background is not light projected on to a wall, but rather thousands of individuals holding boards of different colors for each pixel, alternating them just at the right time to show movement within the image, such as the eyes blinking. Thanks for posting this, Pzkfw5!
People are criticising it not because it isn't a good performance, but precisely because it is. How many millions of wasted hours went into this, when they could actually have been farming or learning instead?
If you think we in the west don't waste time in gross abundance, then I suggest you look again. Think of the countless hours spent watching TV and playing games. How you can call this waste boggles the mind - it's development of the human potential! Physical fitness, mental and social discipline, cooperation, appreciation of the arts--the list goes on.
The time we have is ours to waste. TV can even be informative and tell you things that you wouldn't get to see north of the DMZ. This is forced labour for the whims of an untouchable dictator while millions starve.
Sure, we can admire the spectacle in all its brilliance, but all that came at what cost?
Well, one simply shouldn't throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. The failures of the North Korean regime are irrelevant when discussing the relative usefulness of these games as relates to the enrichment of the human experience. It implies that they are somehow inseparable, which I think is a tough argument to make.
The failures of the North Korean regime are entirely relevant to them spending valuable resources on this sort of thing, at the cost of peoples lives. This is spectacular to watch, but ultimately a waste. You may think that to call it this 'boggles the mind', but to call this self-congratulatory parade a 'development of the human potential' is just drivel. This is essentially slave labor.
When there are no jobs, commerce, or real education, the people are reduced to spending the year practicing this shit. North Korea's form of masturbation.
all those poor little guys are slaves.

who asked Is that actaully a large group of people holding colored boards and changing the picture ?
yes it is, they have to practice all the time for many months, it is their job to produce the display, get it wrong and you don't eat.
These people have no access to non state owned TV or Radio what you see in the media is what the government say.
And they have absolutely no access to other things we take for granted such as mobile phones and internet.
