  • Well how do you know he means John Coltrane and not Robbie Coltrane? That's the problem with inference/conjecture/assumptions. Further it does nothing to prove that Royal is racist as he's trying to obviously provoke a reaction from the usually reserved Henry for his own benefit. Royal is a user and manipulates people for his own ends. And he makes amends with Henry later on.

  • RIGHT ON! XD

  • "Don't talk semantics with me!"

  • It's most likely not improv'ed, as Wes Anderson has actors read the script word for word.

  • hahahaha great scene

  • uh, its not only that theyre both black, but he's saying he's smooth like coltrane. I wouldnt call it racist as much as it is stereotyping.

  • Right on!

  • Nothing like a PB&J to calm your nerves.

  • Henry and John Coltrane share no other similarities other than they're black. When Royal boasts that he can "talk some jive", he's basically saying that it's Henry's perceived "hipness" through being black that got Henry his ex-wife in the first place but that he can be "hip" too. Of course, he ends up making an ass of himself.

  • @Djangoblackbird No, idiot. He was just fucking with him as you'd see if you saw the whole scene. He was riling him up. First he pokes at him with a black comparison. Then steams him up more by referring to talking jive - he's pushing the black card - then just says get out the house. His wife comes in, he calms down, and Henry shows that he lost his cool - which was Royal's whole point: to get him to lose his cool over nothing. It worked on you too.

    Its called trolling.

  • The fact that John Coltrane was pretty much the coolest MF to ever live just makes this scene all the more hilarious. LOL Royal tries to be racist and fails miserably.

  • -You heard me Coltrane!

    -Coltrane?

    -What?

  • It just KILLS me when Royal puts his hand in front of his mouth when he calls him Coltrane. So passive agressive!

One of my favorite movies of all times.

  • Ive never noticed that before, but im sure it was completely dilberate. Thats why I love these movies so much. You consistently notice new things everytime you watch them.

  • What did you say?

    I said sit down dammit!

    Oh, I heard you!

  • wait so why did he call him coltrane?

  • Maybe because of John Coltrane?

  • @THOMASkaaz Because he's black.

  • hahaha what the hell does danny glover say at 1:16

  • i think they were just improv-ing dialogue, and glover ran out of things to say waiting for the cue

  • I'll talk some jive like you never heard!!!

  • I guess "Coltrane" is better than "big black buck."

  • Hahaha..."...but if I did..." hahahaha!

  • I just read your info comment. I think the word you are looking for is "improvised," rather than "improved."

  • Right On!

  • New York City

  • what is this from?

  • lol

  • Royal is racist. He's calling him Coltrane because they are both black.

  • @watchmen12

how is royal being racist? - him and pagoda (indian guy) get along great

  • @WATCHMEN12 Why's that racist....twat.

  • @WATCHMEN12 Why's that racist?....twat.

  • @WATCHMEN12

He's not really racist, just inappropriate.

  • @WATCHMEN12 royal is trying to be racist to prove an response from glover so he could gain sympathy, but he doesn't have the killer instinct.

  • @WATCHMEN12 /care
