@GrahamScottSmith If you don't see s ground wire you should have a metal box and perhaps a older house. Or your wire is a the BX type. If you do have a metal box once you secure the switch or outlet to the box it's grounded. However a extra wire screwed into the box is always a good idea

Thanks for posting this! when you join the wires the two black ones what are the orange things called some sort of screw you join the wires together with I have never seen those in the UK

How do you attach a ground wire from the dimmer switch, if there is not one present in the wall?

Here in the US they are called "Wire Nuts" I didn't know that about the UK.
