@knifecut Besides "Staircase," I have seen Dennis in the films "Sweet November," "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?," "The Out Of Towners," and "Come Back To The Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean." She gave excellent performances in each of these films.
Apparently, Dennis' eccentricities extended to her actual life--as, at the time of her premature death, she was supposedly sharing her home with a larger-than-average amount of cats, the very stereotype of an eccentric spinster.
Cher really ought to make some more films. Now she has reached the stage at which she may play more mature, even elderly characters.
Perhaps Cher could play Bea Arthur's character ("Dorothy Zbornak") in a big-screen treatment of "The Golden Girls?" I'm sort of half-kidding with that idea, but it's also semi-plausible.
Cher sort of resembles the actress who played the younger "Dorothy" in the TV series' "Picture it--Brooklyn" flashback sequences.
Whatever one thinks of Cher personally, her politics, etc., she did show with this film that she could really act, and then (as "The Beat Went On") proceeded to deliver three more, Oscar-worthy performances, in "Silkwood," "Mask," and 'Moonstruck," the latter actually winning Cher her first Academy Award for Best Actress.
My bet is this film will see an official DVD release, perhaps next year to commemoate the film's 30th anniversary of theatrical release.
As I think Robert Altman is now deceased, the re-elease of this film, both theatrically and on home video (in DVD format), would be a great means by which to honor Altman.
@gymnastix I meant to type "the re-release of this film, both theatrically and on home video (in DVD format), would be a great means by which to honor (director) Altman."
I'm a hugh Altman fan but I've never seen this one. Weren't most of the film's actors in the stage production? Why isn't the movie available on DVD? Cher should assist her fans with this.
@chermaster85 It's not on DVD? That's strange, because it was released in VHS format when that was the only means (aside from the short-lived Beta Max) of home video media.
@chermaster85 My suggestion to those desiring a DVD copy is to download this film's eight parts (here on You Tube) with the Real Player (is free and easy to install) "Download This Video" tool, then convert to Windows Media Video (.wmv) format.
Once in .wmv format, convert that file using either vDownloader or Any Video Converter (AVC) programs, which are also free, to VCD (NTSC), if using vDownloader, or to .mpeg-layer II, if using AVC.,
Incredible movie...and it was on Broadway in '81 when I lived there and I could have seen the noon show for 4 dollars and STUPID ME...didn't do it!!! I'll never live that down...I don't believe this has ever been released on DVD...thank god you can still find the VHS tape on EBAY...better than nothing...I could watch this over and over...
@knifecut I, too, have always been a fan of the late Sandy Dennis, first became aware of her in the role of the teacher in the film "Up The Down Staircase," a junior high school production of which was my only, official acting experience. I played the high school principal. It was a small, but rewarding role, and an experience I may still say I'm glad I had the chance to have had.
Bravo!!!! Thank you for posting one of my two favorite scenes from this movie!!!! My other favorite scene is of CHER revealing her secret. Thanks for uploading this.

@chermaster85 Then take the resulting .mpeg file and save to a blank DVD disc, which will play on your computer and on most DVD players.
