Young Trucks is a comet arcing across the heavens. you cannot take your eyes off him while he plays. Such genius, such joy!! I hear Duane in every note.
this is about as good as it gets. Superb solos by everyone. They don't mean much though is they're just over any old blues/rock band..the allmans are about as profound as you get, transcending all categories, as the Dead and John Coltrane did. And they still do though even without Duane and Dickey..and Berry. Clapton can bend and build in just such a mind-blowing and gut-wrenching manner it's hard to put words to it. Just beautiful all around.
@FrederickDefraeye still remember the day i heard of the crash, was in my car and pulled over and cried for awhile, after all he went thru cleaning himself up and playing better than ever, to die in a crash like that was tragic. all i can say is, must have been his time, we all have date recorded somewhere as to when we will check out of this hotel called earth
If anyone has heard Dickie play in a while they would understand why he was asked to clean up or get out. He chose to get out and his playing, once great, is now just plain awful, I hate to say it.
Yup, and im gonna get flamed for this but, i prefer them without him, i mean his jams with Duane was insane but when Duane left us, Dickie took this country direction way to far, i cant stand blue sky or rambling man. i always think of ABB like a jazz band, and thats why i love them, i dont want country hits lol! that, said he wrote in memory of elizabeth reed, which is amazing.
I was misunderstood. Without Dicky Betts there would be no Allman Brothers today. He gave them commercial success. He wrote and played some great songs. When they reformed he brought Warren Haynes into the band. Seven Turns and Where it All Began are great records as are the two live ones. Sad to say his rumored drug habit lost him his place and has taken away any fire he had in his playing.
But you cannot discount the old Dicky Betts. He was one of the greats and made Duane better.
yes, i totaly agree, that he saved the band and made Duane better, i was more talking about musical taste, that i prefer the current line up over the Dicky lineup because of my musical taste
@Toris93 You shouldn't get flamed, it's a valid point... BUT please remember that each of the classic jazz styled jams in ABB history ("Liz Reed"; "Jessica"; "High Falls"; "True Gravity" & "Kind Of Bird"- named after Charlie Parker- were written by Dickey... for the most part by himself! Forrest Richard Betts was every bit as responsible for the ABB jazz influence as any of the others.
@Toris93 i agree, a lot of his later contributions were country oriented, but i have to disagree in the case of blue sky. blue sky is a beautiful song which fits the profile for a great guitar jam (listen to SUNY stonybrook version)
man this is really great... i was just listening though to the version of stormy monday with duane at the atlanta international pop festival, and to me he delivers more power and emotion than anybody else.. from the subtle, notes to the all out wailing sustain of his les paul, nobody could do it like Skydog! Good to see his genious and influence is not lost
Bad blood between Dickey and the band that fired him even though he was a founding member. Dickey has demons and they've caused him nothing but heartache. They also may very well contribute to his abiltiy to play at the level he does. who knows. I only know that I've been seeing this band since 1972 and they've never sounded better than when I saw Dickey with Derek in Houston in 2000.
thanks man , i didnt know, betts is as good as anyone in my opinion, hope he gets back and irons things out, his style is great , i heard him and warren with band on t v , and he was awesome, iv been playing 40 years ,heard them all, thanks again
@Wharfomatic demons and hard times greatly contribute to being able to take blues playing to another level, i learned it first hand a couple of years ago when i almost died of an aneurysm, and lost my mother and youngest son in the same year. old saying, you got to pay your dues to sing and play the blues, soooo true.....
@rick00770 From what I've heard, Dickey has some neuropathy in his hands, and can't really play anymore. There's only so much poison you can put into a body before it rebels. Gregg paid the price, and apparently Dickey is now paying it. Clapton got off the H before it killed him.
what? Sure warren and derek were influenced by clapton but they aren't playing at all in claptons style, they have both developed their own unique style. Your comment is asinine. This is an old blues standard that the allman brothers have basically made their own, if anything derek and warren are trying to emulate the way the brothers originally played this.
sad that you have to join those that put down eric, he one of the best all around consistant guitar players in the world, ive heard him play rings around people at time, hes not always mind blowing but neither is anyone else, and derek is no duane, duane was tighter and tone was better, he,s great yes but not the best, ive heard them all, so get what ever you get out of putting people down, with your ignorant comment and get a life
WOW! One of the best versions of SM ever! Greggs voice sounded great; his Hammond sounded just like an old church organ, and of course the Big 3 tore it up on thier guitar solos! Awesome!! Thanks for posting!
there sure have been some great moments this year, and this ranks right up there with, loan me a dime, mountain jam, and leavin trunk. anybody got stand back or wasted words from 3/10?
i gotta get me my own moogis. these clips are just a tease.
I'd have to say, out of all the performances clapton did with the allman brothers these 2 night, this one is probably his standout from all the others. You give him a jor progression blues song, he'll tear it up.
Clapton's solo is magical; the dramatic "entrance" is classic Eric!
