@reverbie65 Yes, Fran is still running the business, but in a smaller way. She is not using a "teacher". She continues to use all the teaching material that Jeff made.
Im an up and coming steel player who was introduced to Jeff by my music instructor whom took Jeff's steel class years ago. What a remarkable individual with an exceptional talent who will be missed.
I took a class in 1984...and enjoyed Jeff .. he was quite a character.. with his dry humor.. Those are super fond memories of Jeff and Fran.. God Rest His Soul...
Omigawd "packingten" I saw that too! In the middle of Larry Sasser's set I think it was. Jeff got messing with that little Sho-Bro demo steel, and four big guys carried him AND the little steel off the stage. It was hillarious! I was in the front row center that year, and have audio cassettes of the entire show!
Rest in peace Jeff, you are missed more than I know how to say.
Jeff was a first rate Person and one of the best players period, He was also a lot of Fun to be around. I saw them carry him off the stage at Steel Convention after He got ahold of Doug Jernigans little steel and played it with Larry Sasser and the Nashville Now Band in 1987, Really gonna miss Him
Not enough "stars" to even try to rate this. God rest his soul, this is Jeff at his best! What a loss. I saw him play many times, both at Scotty's Convention, and Bob Maickel's shows in Armonk N.Y. and later at Norwalk Ct.
Looks like he's messing with the strings behind the roller nut? I've seen Jeff play many times and I miss him. He was a great entertainer as well as a musician.
So solid state isn't the only option.I'm new to pedal steel, waiting for my student model and have been reading about all the solid state amps that are popular.Jeff's version of this song is truly inspirational. Thanks.
just goes to show the left hand is over rated in steel playing :) Got to hang around Jeff some back in the early 80's in Watertown...great man...infectious laugh!
I remember playing his instruction record(And A Few Good Friends)til I wore it out. Sadly everyone forgot how original a player Jeff was because of his brilliant teaching. If you could find a version of his Steel Guitar Rag from the same album it would be great!!!!.
I remember going to a couple of Jeff's seminars when my wife was trying to learn to play. There was a whole big room full of steel guitars and players. It was like an Uber-cool Convention. I loved it. He was considered one of the best, even twenty five years ago.
jeff newman will continue to help and influence steel players for many many years, i have just got several of his DVD lessons from Gerry Hogan and they are superb , worth every penny. On them Jeff is so clear in his thinking and this comes across in his own great playing, what a great way to play this Johnny Paycheck song.
Jeff was a superb touch and tone technician on the pedal steel guitar. This is a wonderful creative rendition by a great and talented man. We miss him and we will continue to miss him......Great Sound, Great Song......
Showman for sure. Jeff was NOT a showoff

@morninghopewindow, he didn't twist the pegs, he pressed on the strings between nut and tuning pegs. Showman or showoff? I dunno, but it's cool

I went through most of the material of these very rare Newman performances.
In my consideration, this is probably one of his most finest and best tunes.
It is really a shame, that this man is not recognised, for something he trully was:
A GOD in his own field.
Where has the world gone, that the majority of the population is satisfied with some silly rapper chap monkey tumes?
How can we preserve this Stuff?
Digitally remastered and sold at every single Record Store , our kids might step by.

I used to love his columns in Guitar Player magazine, although I had no interest in country or lap steel at the time.
