@Waddeck43 The SP " Special Performance " 747 was shorter than a standard 747. The SP, being shorter and lighter could fly far more distance than its bigger brother or sister. South African and Quantas type routes, best regards.
belive you me .. if this 747 wanted to it would get up and fly again . in 1994 in england at luton airport a 747 had to land on the runway because of a problem . i am not sure what the problem was . the runway was said to be much to short for it to take off .. when she took off she was off the runway 3/4 before the end .
@razor2001wgc They probably would have to remove all the interior furnishings and take off at near zero fuel in order for it to be light enough to take off from that short a runway. I don't doubt it could take off, but not with any sort of load.
Credible. The Rand Airport main runway is 5600 feet. Either of the two 747s can take off with minimal fuel/zero payload and go to Johannesburg Airport 8 miles NE and refuel. Heck, the new 747-8 was off in less than 5,000 feet, I witnessed it myself earlier this month.
I had to cry watching this video. One of the coolest aircraft put to rest... Sp's were the best! Does anyone know if any SPs are still flown anywhere in the world? Really sad especially with this song... :')
they arent retired... i was at alanta air port like 2 weeks ago and saw like 3 parked in the international flight zone... i only remember only one of the airline it was china airlines. lol plus i went to las vegas in april and saw one for America Airlines (AA) take off and vigin alantic leave its gate so ha they arent retired

good lord. i would never even think of putting a 747, even the SP model, on a runway that narrow and that short. those are some outstanding pilots.
