  • The gracies always say to interviewers that BJJ is like a chess game, if they ever ask what that means they should just show them this video!

  • 7:47 cough into hand... Eww... Gross...;P

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful

  • It looks like they are just flowing, neither one is trying too hard.

  • Wouldn't GSP letting BJ rub his legs all over his back actually benefit BJ in the later rounds? Ever try to take someone down with Vaseline on their legs? Impossible

  • I like his technique with the leg cross over when Viera goes to pass. Gotta start trying that .

  • お互いにレベル高いから全然パスできない。

  • Leo went easy ask Ricardo.

  • that looks so tiring

  • I love how it doesnt even look like there trying

  • Very important, use your legs as if they were your hands. That is what my instructor tells me. You use a lot less energy and it's fn to watch people get frustrated because they can't pass your guard, all while you are mainly using your legs.

  • I've never rolled with either of them. I'm low on the BJJ totem poll. But I roll with guys who are multiple Champions, they've rolled with Vieira. Even they have the decency to admit that guy ate their lunch. BJ Penn is in fact a Prodigy, but Vieira has been in the game longer, and is a master. That guy would eat your lunch just like he did Bravo's.

  • twister!

  • How the FUCK are you supposed to get around legs that move like arms? Two options ...

    1- you dont

    2- you become GSP

  • @Fupper16 Or if your Frankie Edgar ;)

  • @Fupper16 You become GSP and use vaselin!

  • @Fupper16, GSP CHEATED you fool.

  • @kurtsloane Yes, butt-sore-Penn-lover, the vaseline on his back really helped him land all those jabs, superman punches, and takedowns that he did.

  • @Fupper16 3. use HGH.

  • @Fupper16 u can become gsp by rubbing vasilene all over urself dont trip i hate bj to

  • that's exactly the way you defend the position, BJP is a master, at first sight seems to be easy to do, hell I can say no way, it's not easy. , nice video

  • Comment removed

  • @MenziFanclub I think you should think b4 talking asshole, both of them are really good, you cant deny BJP is really good 2, so take your comment and shove it up ur ass.. The video is good anyways

  • @MenziFanclub what are you? a white belt with a jiujitsu book in his hand? Whot he fuck are you to preach?

  • Vieira could hav dominated if they were going serious

  • 0:50s into the clip, the dreaded pretzel technique :D

  • Bj's legs are EVERYWHERE

  • Man, Its really hard to pass BJ's Guard.

  • High level rolling! Next level shit!

  • They are training guard passing

  • Leo was being nice, he could stomp BJ if he wanted to.

  • im so hungry right now

  • kind of funny how vieira shirt has the words FE!

  • bj spent 3 years doing only bjj

  • what kinda mats are those??

  • Leo Viera came to our club to hold a BJJ seminar, believe me when i tell ya, what this guy teaches is pure gold!

  • This is fuckin wicked.

  • BJ has a sick guard to be sure.

  • Leo would rape Penn in compitition

  • @SuperEzekial19 Totally disagree

  • @SuperEzekial19 If Penn wasn't a career MMA fighter and trained nothing but his grappling -- I don't think too many people would be able to defeat Penn in competition. Look at him more than hold his own and he only trains his grappling part of the time.. that's incredible.

  • @SuperEzekial19 in pure grappling he definitely would, you cannot be training all the different disciplines in mma and conditioning and expect to be world title contender in 1 of those disciplines, you must be an absolute specialist in elite sport, its not a place fpr all rounders.

  • there is so much war going on here!!

  • yeah but BJ is still an ass for turning hes back on people wich are responsible for hes succes : )

  • Hella flexible!

  • whoa is all i can say, thats some technical jiujitsu

  • I think Leo will always be a better Gi fighter... An honour to watch both of them roll though. Penn is just so Wiley, lol.

And Piros, "Rolling" is sparring in BJJ, it can be done fullspeed, but usually done at like half speed so you both learn/practice the technique behind it. You rarely see Submissions because it's about learning to see and anticipate whats coming so you don't get caught in one, but if you are given a submission oppurtunity, that doesn't mean you won't take it, lol,

  • Too slow, go faster or BJ should just KO his a8ss and end the sparring.

  • great slow roll.

  • slow roll? It would be a marvel to see them go full blast.

  • bjs guard is almost unpassable

  • @joejoenuts Ask GSP or Frankie.. or matt... or Lyoto... ;-)

  • excuse me, I'm a noob in BJJ, can someone explain me in what this "rolling" exercise consist? is there any difference with just trying to subbmit each other?

thanks, sorry for my bad english, I'm from Spain ^^

  • @pirosmaker rolling is pretty much just going live its up to u if u wanna try and submit the other person

  • @pirosmaker Rolling is just another word for sparring in the jiu jitsu world my friend. If your on the mats and someone asks if you wanna roll, there saying "do you wanna spar"

  • @nethought Its funny, i asked a crowd at an open mats gym and i asked the crowd "anyone want to get a roll in ?" and theyres some chatter amongst the crowd and one guy comes to me as im sitting indian style and we intro each other and they we slap hands and we roll. then the young guys in the gym start using the word. they learned many things that day.lol. so if u dont know what rolling means then your probably going to get submitted more times than once.lol.

  • @ecampo5 sounds like my 1st day on the mats!

  • @pirosmaker Rolling is just another word for sparring in the jiu jitsu world my friend. If your on the mats and someone asks if you wanna roll, there saying "do you wanna spar?"

  • Where did this take place?

  • What a sight to see. BJJ World Muthafucken Champion is just 3 yrs of practice. POWERFUL.

  • Leozin brincando com o gringo...

  • nice i always like to watch black belts rolling because i feel that is better to learn cuase is all skills .... thank you for the upload..

  • 10 minutes of rolling is pretty damn tiring.

  • @Srt4black yupp that is for sure not much better for cardio then a nice long roll.. i love being able to flow roll with someone else who has good technique and has been doing it for a while we will go for like the last 30 minutes of class and it is awesome for cardio

  • bj greased.

  • lol.. bj penn is the man..

  • these guys are in good shape. anyone who has sparred in grapplilng knows much physical endurance it demands. jesus.

  • @freespadersuggs YES SURR

  • what city are they rolling in?

  • why are they going at such a slow pace?

  • @eugdog106 They are sparring.

  • Damn BJ has a nasty guard!

  • howcome they stop?

  • BJ's guard is legendary

  • sometimes high level grappling just gets really boring. there is waaaaay too much respect here. happens in BJJ and in college wrestling. I like guys that just go.

  • BJ was awesome that day. It was soooo fun to be at that training class that afternoon. They should have showed the tape that me and Roger made 30 mins later.

  • Thanks for the vid. I actually learned a lot from it.

  • nice temple grapple best way to improve your technique. there is no better way than to temple grapple going 100 percent all the time only leads to sloppy habits and gets you no were in the bjj world. going 100 percent might work in wrestling but if u have no technique in bjj you will get tossed around in guard and the guy on bottom wont break a sweat one of the best temple grapples i have ever seen

  • damn! i hope BJ stretched before this!

  • nice rubber guard

  • This is great.

  • dude bj's up down is better than his guard....

  • rickson gracie!

  • BJ looks a 30+ pounds bigger than Leo?

  • Ha haar into my trap you walk! I am a grappler of sorts. I thought id try and get the bjj fans angry on the defensive. Congrats on not biting too hard.

  • lol what an innocent comment on your side

  • "What happened to kung fu?"

"The truth man... thats what happened to it... the truth."

  • not if u understand it

  • Watch to learn, not to judge.

  • @spacetranaut this is probably one of the smartest comments i have ever seen on youtube.

  • Sorry guys i gotta go with Leo Vieira > Penn, Penn is a spectacular grappler but vieira is ranked 3 of all time by the gracies who know a bit more then me about BJJ i think

  • You also gotta remember BJ stopped training for sport JJ competition after he won the Mundials. There's no doubt in my mind that he could have won at least 1 more and an ADCC title as well. You're only world class when your training it everyday and practicing. He's a world class fighter, and was at one point a world class grappler. But Leo is a grappling god, he always looks like he's school rolling in his matches which is mind blowing. One I can say for sure is Leo has the better guard.

  • @NeoOsiris19 I actually think Penn could have passed it. But only if he were to get a lot rougher. But from a technical stand point, I think you are correct. P4P Leo Veira is the better grappler. I think if you were to start tossing in attributes things would turn out differently. This seems to be a very techincal roll going on. Not competition.

  • @NeoOsiris19 no way! bj deff outclassed leo in the guard department in this roll, relooping like an animal. war bj

  • @NeoOsiris19 it depends what kind of guard they are using to be honest bj's flexibility is amazing and he lived in the guard at the mundials and was able to pull of some sweeps from guards you dont see very often stuff like abmar barbosa. bj even pulled off a sweep from tornado guard at the mundials. but yes in a competition leo would beat him, just like in a fight bj would beat leo

  • @carlsongracieteam Abmar is a beast. I've had the pleasure of rolling with him a few times in VA. He's amazing.

  • @nethought yeah abmar has one of the top 5 guards in all of grappling i say that confidently i never even came close to passing his guard, and neither did kron gracie.

  • BJ would have been fun to see in No Gi at ADCC. He is so hard to pass with those legs of his.

  • @NeoOsiris19 bj practices hes bjj everyday. they both couldnt pass each others guards. they both have very good guards

  • @NeoOsiris19 Exactly. A guy doesn't get a black belt in 3 years and then win the Mundials a week later without being an absolute phenom. I watched an interview in which BJ stated that he was at one point literally obsessed with BJJ. He couldn't stop thinking about it. Even in the shower he'd be going over all possible scenarios. Had he decided he wanted to win more titles, there isn't anyone who could've stopped him. He just decided he'd rather fight instead.

  • @willman808 Yeah even in fighting BJ said he if he had beaten Pulver to get the UFC title he would have retired and moved on to something else to challenge himself, like he did after he won the mundials. You don't get the nickname The Prodigy by some bullshit haha.

  • @NeoOsiris19 On the other hand he did win the Mundials in a year where his division was very sparse on top competitors. He wouldn't do well today.

  • @Mcconviller just so you know, i've trained with many gracies, rodrigo, royce etc. and they think bj penn is a traitor. so of coarse they wont rank penn anywhere on that list. no brainer man

  • Bravo is just as rubbery as Penn? LOL, that says it all I guess. When did Bravo win the Mundials? Has everyone forgotten about Penn's achievement of becoming the first ever American to win the prestigious event with just 3 years of training? Penn's ground game is among the best in the world at his size.

  • the dude legs are made of rubber xD

  • he cant pass his guard

  • its practice leo is letting penn retrive and play open guard leo is much better then penn at bjj believe me hes on another level

  • @SuperEzekial19 that is total bullshit. I know you're tring to paint yourself as some kind of grappling elitist but if that were truly the case you'd know how good BJ was, not just in the MMA aspect of grappling but pure grappling as well. He's not only on Veira's level, I'd favor him in a pure grappling match between the two.

  • @Mowglieboy69 -- I'd say you're the one pretending to be an MMA elitist.

BJ Penn is my favorite fighter ever, but Leo Vieira does nothing but compete in Jiu Jitsu and he has been doing it since he was a baby. On top of that, his Jiu Jitsu accomplishments are much more impressive than BJ's. I'm not saying BJ couldn't be a better grappler, but his focus is on fighting now.

  • @SMSUMarine the fact that his focus is on MMA, or that Vieira's accomplishments in BJJ outweigh his, does not mean that he'd win in a grappling match between the two. Certainly he's more accomplished considering that's all he does, but in a head to head matchup the only guy around his weight I might favor over BJ is Marcelo. BJ is truly a phenom on the ground, I can't even fathom him getting handled or submitted on the ground, his tools are that good.

  • your an idiot you obviously dont understand BJJ at all I bet your just googling all your "facts" please get your tounge out of BJ's ass. MMA match BJ wins But pure grappling Leo Vieira all the way, Mark Kerr couldent even sub leo he even said it was like fighting water, so please be quiet

  • Mark Kerr was a beast back in the day. My friend Mico won the pan american and taught BJJ at UCLA and trained with the wrestling club there. He said KERR would just toss him off like a fly off a dogs nutsack. Leo Vieira is sick; and his check mat guys are tearing it up at BJJ tournaments in so cali now. BJpenn is awesome too.

  • Of course Mark Kerr couldn't sub Vieira, Mark Kerr is a freestyle wrestler.

  • ever heard of rani yahya? subbed leo at adcc.

  • Really? You mean at the 2003 ADCC Under 65kg quarter finals? Leo won so get your facts right you fool

  • no take a look at 2005 and 2007.

  • 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champions under 66kg winner Rani Yahya

2006 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champions under 66kg winner Leo Vieira

2005 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champions under 66kg winner Leo Vieira

Leo is the better grappler 2-1!!!!!!!

  • P.S he won the 2003 ADCC under 66kg so 3-1 too Leo Vieira

  • rani subbed leo. leo stalled and won on points.

  • Rani got lucky with the sub, winning on points proves your the better grappler, being able to pin, pass, and control is a lot more difficult to do it proves your better and that you have more skill hence why Leo and Ricardo are ranked in the top 5 in the world and Rani is not.

  • Your a bit of a snooty asshole aren't you.... leo trains grappling... all the time. Bj doesn't, and he couldn't pass bj's gaurd, did you not just watch the video in question. Theres a video above these comments you know.... Bj went from not noing shit, to winning the mundials in 3 years!!! WTF!!! Unheard of is an understatement. In a fight bj would rape leo's unconscious corpse, in a grappling match right now, it's obviously a stalemate. If bj trained pure grappling, he would rape leo.

  • are you being serious Leo would smash penn in pure grappling i know brovo is as rubbery as penn and leo destroyed him penn has nothing on leo so please dnt reply to this loser

  • and u know this how???? how are u comparing eddie bravo to a Mundial BB champion???? what titles has eddie won????

BJ hasnt done pure grappling since 2000, but what he did from 1997-2000 may never again be replicated in BJJ.....he is definetely the prodigy for a reason...

  • i would know this because i actully train bjj therfor i understand the aspects of it, as for u ur obviously a bj penn fanboy i wasnt comparing bj to bravo i was comparing penn to leo vieira who is ranked in the top 5 in the world along with ricardo vieira pan de pano and garcia penn is not evan top 10

  • BJ hasnt competed in BJJ since 2000......u point is mute.....BJ if he concentrated full time on grappling certainly has the talent to get tot the top again if he took it up.....shit, it only took him 3 years to get to the top last time

  • true dat. leos my trainer.

all i have to say is.

hes fucking crazy as fuck. wouldnt want to fight him on the streets

  • your gay

  • @SuperEzekial19 Smash is probably an overstatement. Penn is vastly more well rounded than Bravo.

  • @Mowglieboy69 I think Penn would have to dedicate the kind of time he used to dedicate to sport to hit the elite pro BJJ level. I don't doubt he could do it. From watching this, we see that Penn has some brilliant BJJ. But Penn's BJJ has an mma focus right now. And that isn't submission wrestling, or BJJ. It is MMA. ANd there is no better MMA BJJ than Bjs. He has made really good BJJ guys (Diego Sanchez for instance) look like amatuers in the cage. But again not pure sub/ or BJJ.

  • @Godsmasher22 Fair enough. I agree with you actually, I was just being an asshole who wasn't willing to get owned on a Youtube comments section, LOL.

  • @Godsmasher22 bj penn is a bjj prodigy he was bjj world champion after training for only 3 years he has already reached that elite level. bjj wasnt challenging enough for him so he went mma he has already been bjj champ and fastest person to go from white belt to black belt ever. So u are very ignorant if u think bj could not reach an elite level in bjj considering he already has....

  • @seigemma4 I know that he has. I am just saying as a pure sport grappler, BJJ isn't where he used to be as a sport grappler. He has spent the past years applying BJJ principles to MMA specific competition. I think to be in the class of a Marcello Garcia, Jacare, Roger Gracie (as pure sport grapplers) he would simply have to get back pure grappling training. That this was my point I thought was utterly apparent.

  • @seigemma4 Not challenging enough for him? As amazing as BJ Penn is, and as incredible as his BJJ is. He would not out-grapple the likes of Marcelo Garcia, Jacare, Roger, Xande, Galvao, etc.

  • @Robopencil he isnt even in the same weight class as any of them and he doesn't compete in the absolute weight class so for u to even mention those names is real dumb. Roger gracie out weighs bj by 70 pounds why even bring him into this? u obviously no nothing about sport grappling.

  • i know leo veira brother !

i trained at his gym !!!

  • There's one thing all of us can be sure about:

To get to this level, you can't have any ego.

  • thats the damn straight i hate crazy ego's guys.

lol i get tapped all da x so i dnt have in

    ego

  • Yeah man. You learn faster and get better when you aren't afraid of losing. Hell, sometimes I get caught on purpose so I can learn someone else's game.

  • Well man, that works for Leo, but BJ quite often acts like he is some sort of superhero or superior humam being!! Actually he should be thankful he's got talent cuz he is ugly as fuck: look at the size of that head and at that lack of neck - it looks like Leo is fighting a Panda!! LOL

  • lol you jokin bro? Leo would smash diaz

  • ofcourse.

lucas leite one of his black belt world champions smashed nick diaz.

  • fuck lucs leite he was winning on pionts and nick got pooked in the eye nate won his fight and he was losing the diaz bros r slow starters.nate won by traingle shit i would love to see a rematch he passed his guard is was very technical match but cesar gracie is my team so fuck that niggah

  • ? nick did a shit ass flying arm bar. honestly. lucas was playing smart. lucas's half gaurd is fucking intense. and even in a interview before the match on youtube nick sold him self off short saying he wasnt a bjj fighter.

are you in gracie barra by the way?

  • ? No im not in that academy im in cesar gracie jiu jitsu academy, gracie sports center. it was a good match anyway hope nick wins his next fight and nate is def gonna win his next fight. peace

  • The prodigy man thats bj nick diaz is awesome but not quite like bj man .

  • lol.....both these guys would rape Diaz in BJJ.....these guys are world champions......

  • And Nick Diaz would lose to Kimbo. Making Kimbo the greatest. just kidding.

  • @rowdyws6 wow, you are dumb

  • LEO actually feels more comfortable from the guard and won many of matches from guard submissions, said it in his own seminar.

I think it's BJ whos possessed with the top position but in this video you can't really tell since both tried to control the top position.

  • was leo playing de la riva gaurd

  • bj has much more complete bjj skill set leo is very much top position obsessed.

  • bj penn iz goin easy aye

  • Have you seen what Vieira can do?

  • its just light rolling not a fucking tournament

  • When BJ Penn competed at the 2000 Mundials and won, his opponents didn't even score a single point on him. He's a freak with natural talent

I would love to see how Penn would fare against ADCC but he doesn't focus all of his time on BJJ. Now he has to focus equal time in other areas.

  • its just about impossible to pass bj with no Gi.

  • you guys do know that he won the world championships a few years back right? (to all those wondering how he'd do in ADCC, he'd do more than fine haha)

  • um...did bj win the world champs in a Gi? cos from my experience, seeing some1s gi achievements isn't the best way to analyse his no-gi game.

hes definitely one of the worlds best grapplers and a prodigy but i wouldn't say that he would excel in the ADCC against people who train specifically in no-gi based on his achievements with a gi on...

  • all top no gi competetors are top gi competetors..

    Roger

    Ruben Charles

    Jacare

    Xande

    marcelo

    etc

  • @Alchy21 what about vieira and drysdale bro?

  • @Alchy21 Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu the best

  • there are far fewer no gi practitioners than gi ones out there.

  • Ye But BJ Penn Utilizes his BJJ in MMA..the ULTIMATE form of No Gi competition and is still able to submit guys no problem. Last time I saw the god of No Gi compete in MMA (Marcelo Garcia), he had trouble finishing a rear naked. BJ would do just fine in No Gi competition.

  • i agree with you, but on a side note, garcia had problems with getting the RNC because of the gloves getting in the way. If it were no gloves then garcia more than likely would have got the sub

  • yes, but BJ pulls off RNC's all the time in MMA against high level grapplers.....of course he has been doing mma far longer than marcelo, but that speaks volumes of just how good bj is on the ground in mma....hes a fuckin beast....

  • @MFBueno63 i agree

  • @MFBueno63

BJ could still be a beast in sports jiu jitsu if he still trained for it, you can't forget that he's the first american mundial champ and did it with only 3-4 years of training.

  • Thats pobaly because M.G is full time grappling not MMA. If BJ penn went to Abu Dahbi he'd be the same way.

  • They were playing, that is all.

  • BJ could, if he trained BJJ/submission full time probably take home the ADCC prize in his weight, and do well in the absolute (though stall out in the top three four or five). But why would he. He makes tons of money doing MMA, so the money he could make winning the grueling Abu Dhabi doesn't seem like a big pay off, and would be detrimental to his MMA training.

  • i love how their guards r so different but both awesome

leo's guard's seems more technical while bj seems to rely more on his natural dexterity and flexibility of his legs like arms, its definitely fun to watch
