This is one of the most incredible songs I have ever heard. and the funny thing is the Most incredible song I have ever heard was also a pink floyd song, Coming Back To Life!
Hello i know its not good question for this time :D But anyway :) Witch AMP, or Processor , effect, call it how u want, but witch is this one that David use. I mean, his guitar tone goes up and down really fast on the same frett, how he does it? It sounds very low and he does something and it sound higher, a way higher... its not only guitar... im sure :) Thanks for help anyway, and now im gonna chill out and relax again with his songs :) Peace :)
I know you won't read this David, but on behalf of all of us, thank you, thank you, thank you, for all the great music that you have given us through the years.
He uses a Digitech Whammy Pedal. It is considered as an extreme version of the Tremolo on the guitar. If you think of it like a Wah pedal, as he presses the pedal down, instead of creating a wah effect, it raises the pitch of the Guitar. When it is totally "Heeled Down", It is a full octave (or two, depending on the setting) from the original note. In this case, he is using a one octave up.
Were I allowed to have any two guests over for dinner from any point in history, I would set a place for Jesus and David Gilmour and have this song on as our background dining music.
@tossedpenny Couldn't agree more with you on that one. Jesus and Gilmore, Jesus for his lifestyle, Gilmore for his music. Strong respect for both of them.
@TheSKCProductions david pours his heart our in his guirar playing this song is so amazingg
RICHARD RIP - you will be forever missed david misses you i miss u everyone does take care in heaven u and god make some great songs for david to play and us to listen to when we all get there.. you are missed so much this is so beautiful
Awesome & Angelic, I JUST LOVE THIS IS SO SWEET AND I LOVE THAT GUITAR, swirling around energy, kinda does remind me of the good stuff of Pink Floyd, but this is amazing, like you can feel mother nature communicating through you and to all of humanity to embrace the energy presented through this melody! Just love it. Thanks 4 sharing.
if i was there, i would have walked out (after the concert) totally confused because of the awesome songs and the loud and echoing sound of everything, i guess.
His music transcends filth and makes me feel alive and it makes me live all of time instantly pondering and reflecting the vastness that is and how wonderful life is he makes my soul hurt and my life a little better . Thank You David .
SO HOW LONG YOU GUYS BEEN INTO THE FLOYD GILMOUR FOR WELL ME ITS BEEN A LIFES JOURNEY FROM 1988 TO THE PRESSENT ALLWAYS BEEN MY FAV BAND A CLOSE SECOND IS ZEPP THE FIRST TIME I HEARD FLOYD WAS GREAT GIG IN THE SKY AND MY FIRST ALBUM OF HEM WAS DARKSIDE ON THE 12,3 1988 AND AM 32
David Gilmour's music is beautiful - always. And it does manage to rise here above the too saccharine, too... schmaltzy arrangements and lyrics. I wish all the "rest" would fall away and we could hear his cristalline sound the way it should be. Sometimes things need to be said - albeit with love, respect and admiration. Thank God for The Orb, is all I can say. Let us hope we will never be put through "On an Island" again. Leave the crooning to Michael Buble.
@TheSKCProductions It's stupid to even compare guitarists of Gilbert's (or Gilmour's) level between each other. They're all doing their own thing. Apples and watermelons man,
Don't know what to say but with this song, David took me to the same place/dimension where Sting took me once when he sang "When we dance" many years ago...
Don't know what to say but with this song, David took me to the same place/dimension where Sting took me once when he sang "When we dance" many years ago
@5tonyvvvv Well, now it seems at least they are. Ain't gonna mean a Waters, Gilmour, Mason Floyd tour, but nice that they can at least talk and play together once in a while.
@TheSKCProductions haha ... you read my mind. I never understood the Waters vs Gilmour argument, it's plain as day who carried Floyd. And he is so humble. He is my hero too.
Every guitarist if good in their own way. Gilmore doesn't need to run up and down the frets trying impress with blinding speed. He can get more out of only 5 notes... than most guitarists can get from 10 minutes of shredding. In my humble opinion.....that's what makes Gilmore.......Gilmore. Plus.......don't forget the rest of the band. It takes more than one spark plug to make a good engine run.
gilmour is great but there's no point in compare him to paul wich comes from different musical roots and is one of the most versitile musicians today he played 3 differenet bands and had huge success in each , IMO. i'm not saying who's better here . i like them BOTH
@cansurvivor4 man i don't necessarily believe in heaven however i do not discount the possibility of an afterlife, but nonetheless if there is a heaven do not worry it will sound exactly like this. I know this simply because anything less simply wouldnt be heaven.
most beautiful solo ive ever heard :') along with the numb solo he did in pulse... but this is just amazing, get butterflies every time i listen to it... what an artist!
joins other guitarists on the list of under appreciated... such as Adrian Belew, Lindsey Buckingham... to name two of many more....that give their souls to the instrument.....
many ppl say roger was the one who carried floyd to victory, others say gilmour, but i dont give a fuck they both put floyd on the map, and Richard had something to with it too.
don't need make amazing and fast movements, cuz the music is sublime, just feel the solo and youlook how the word are not necesary to transmit a feeling.
Truly one of the best guitarist our world will ever see. Tone from God, crystal clear, clean sound from that Black Strat of his. It's a shame Waters had to be a jerk to the rest of the band.
one of the few albums were live version blows the album version out of water, on an island was good but live versions of album are legendary, what i would have gived to see this concert!!!
yeah i completely agree. The live versions have more of an edge and Gilmour's leading playing live is better than the studion solos on On an Island. Although the solo on Pocketful of Stones is pretty much note for note as the album which is fine with me because it's beautiful
oh i hear u bud, i would give my left nut to see david gilmour/roger waters/ pink floyd in concert, it is my dream but unfortunatly it will never happen.
Sighs, the nearest I'll ever get to seeing the mighty Floyd is at home (either Live in Gdansk or at the Royal Albert Hall on dvd) What a humble icon Dave Gilmour is. Is there any wonder why so many guitarists try to acquire his sound today? Truly ahead of the times.. his solo's are amazing!
@mcintomney1988 I can't even describe how incredible this friggn song is and how talented of a guitarist David Gilmour is. DG can play this trippy mezmorizing music that is beyond what words can describe. he's in his own world when he plays and he plays on a level that just can't be touched. Gilmour is a god... that's all there is to it. I would do MANY things to see Pink Floyd with all the original members play in like 1972 or something but as u said it will unfortunately never happen :/
@mcintomney1988 u dont even know... I'd give a nut and a friggn arm 2 see the real Pink Floyd perform live, especially if it were back in like 1971 or so; unfortunately cuz im not old enough, it will always remain a dream... Pink Floyd is better than what words can describe. Gilmour has this way of just getting u into the music so much that ur momentarily out of reality, or similar to his 3rd solo album- A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. Pink Floyd is 2nd on my list all time behind Led Zeppelin.
@mcintomney1988 Maybe Barrett and Wright will come down for a one-off gig, temporarily abandoning their Great Gig in the Sky together :) Please, God, give them a leave of absence for us. We will all pay you back in gold when we finally reach you :)
I feel really bad for the youth I see posting on here that never had the opportunity to see these guys live. It's like no other concert experience every produced. Period.
i was like you im 32 and when i was 11 i first heard floyd and i knew then that this music is somethin more i wish that i could have seen them back in the day but i saw the floyd in 94 and it was the best day ever .
yeah i started listening to pink floyd in high school, i'm 20, so it was after they split up. i wish i could have seen then, especially roger waters. i know some people hate him since he was a control freak, which resulted in the band spliting up, but he's a genius. and i wish i knew about floyd and saw their tour in 94 :(
its not a tremolo bar. hes using a whammy pedal and slowly "slides" an octave higher he also uses the guitars tremolo that creates a vibrato effect (tremolo is higher and lower volume. almost like the volume is "pulsing")
r u on this planet thay wil never b and i mean never b music made like this again as daves best freind and band member died of cancer so no no no im still in moruin
Thanks, David. I am a Hurricane Katrina survivor. This album came out at one of the worst times in my life and I dare say it helped get me through it all; especially this song.
3 more morons have been detected =).. One of the best performances of all time

Pure Genius is David's Guitar.. for moments it brings tears..
Rick Wright was present at the time.. now he's gone. so sad.
He was a crucial part of the Band.. although they were not playing as Pink Floyd here..

How does he achieve the "sliding" effect of the solos? Is he using some sort of pedal? I always thought he played it on the pedal steel

ele consegue fazer o efeito "parecido" com o som da lap stell porque usa um pedal oitavador...
He get to do this effect like pedal steel because he's use pedal octaver (Whammy, made by DigiTec)

i was like you im 32 and when i was 11 i first heard floyd and i knew then that this music is somethin more i wish that i could have seen them back in the day but i saw the floyd in 94 and it was the best day ever .

yeah i started listening to pink floyd in high school, i'm 20, so it was after they split up. i wish i could have seen then, especially roger waters. i know some people hate him since he was a control freak, which resulted in the band spliting up, but he's a genius. and i wish i knew about floyd and saw their tour in 94 :(

Wow, this song really really brings out their signature tone. Which is mainly generated by Richard Wright. RIP.
But savor the moments he was alive, and all the advances he and them have made for music.

Its very sad indeed. But it will be this way till the end of this age.
Music touches people in different ways, and regardless of what the experts say, music influences the way people think.

I'm a bit of a guitar noob, what's he doing at 3:54 that makes the notes go that high?
thebishopoffunk 2 years ago
the tremolo bar, who is sometimes mistaken as whammy bar. an example is a floyd rose, check it out, it is cool
isuckatsweeppicking 2 years ago
it's a vibrato. so you're also wrong. tremelo is a picking technique.
destijl1337 2 years ago
tremelo actually refers to a shaking in volume like repeatedly going from a hight low volume.
but yes it is a picking technique
vanhalenkid 2 years ago
He's using a whammy pedal
MCLOVIN50 2 years ago
its not a tremolo bar. hes using a whammy pedal and slowly "slides" an octave higher he also uses the guitars tremolo that creates a vibrato effect (tremolo is higher and lower volume. almost like the volume is "pulsing")

Thanks, David. I am a Hurricane Katrina survivor. This album came out at one of the worst times in my life and I dare say it helped get me through it all; especially this song.
Absolutely brilliant.
