why is their people saying it's a manual transmission? NO IT'S NOT! NISSAN DOESN'T MANUFACTURE THIS CAR WITH A MANUAL TRANNY! IT'S AN AUTOMATIC WITH PERFORMANCE SHIFT (SLAP SHIFT)
@canthony1019 It isn't Automatic because it has a CLUTCH! (actually two of them), while automatic transmissions use torque converter coupled with planetary gearsets instead. Because driver operates it in "fly-by-wire" computer assisted manner it's sometimes called "semi-automatic", but there's not a single component common with automatic gearbox.
@raphaelstrangelove Clutch or torque converter has nothing to do with whether something is automatic or not. That is just what people are use to it being. The term AUTOMATIC means something that happens without your intervention. It is technically called a semi-auto because you can do both. A MANUAL transmission can only be shifted manually. It will NEVER shift by itself or have the ability to do so. The GTR can be driven in full automatic mode all the time. A Manual car cannot.
So does you warranty go if you use it with the improved 2010 version? Because the guy tried to be polite he added the question: "But you are saying it's not necessary right?" which blocked the answer I wanted to hear: yes you are allowed to use it anytime you want or - no you aren't. does somebody know?
@Dondarkcatcher yes it does. but now yur warranty is only void for the time period launch control is off...in the 2011 0-60 is possible in 3.2 n with launch control off its around 3.5-3.6
But thats what its for. If you look at all the making of GTR videos they all state. The GTR is a do all go anywhere car. Its engeneered from the ground up to be the most capable car there is for what it is. Your grangran can drive it and your friend can drive it to the races. It can be used in any weather or as a GT car. Its japan, they are mental to bring such a monster to life!
@loudblazer The true potential is that it can take you anywhere you need to go, just b/c it snows doesn't mean you have to take a different car or a truck, you can drive the car no matter weather conditions. Drive to the track and then to the store for dinner. I perfect balance of all aspects of life in one vehicle. Yes I know it can't off-road but how often do you off-road in daily life just to get to work or school? for most people they don't. Its a great vehicle and works how intended.
@jonathan1liles yea i work at nissian and people take there 350 z and 370 z in for snow tires i know there not 82k dollar cars but i wouldnt drive it in the winter
Why is it as soon as anyone turns off any sort of traction control in any super car everyone all of sudden thinks it "launch control". By turning off the traction control (VDC or whatever its called in certain vehicles) the launch is no longer being controlled, especially in the GTR.
The gear box in teh GTR is an American BorgWarner; one of the best gearbox companies around.
The first gear cracks on it because of the huge forces on it. This is caused by the big horsepower, massive traction & weight of the car 1700+kgs. Hopefully Borg can create a 1st gear which is able to holdup under these conditions.
Yes, because "launch control" on a 70k car is used for "snow" who the hell drives a GTR in the snow, you would have to be a moron if this doesn't sound fishy to you.
@i5Alex Do you really think so? Nissan's snow / mud launch control explanation from this video is total BS, and their Nurburgring time is also highly suspect. These guys don't really have that much credibility, and I question if the GTR can still achieve 0-60 in 3.5s.
Get what you pay for. GTR transmission is flawed. Its all over the place, its an epic fail. Who cares about the money when you want quality. I would never compromise on quality, forget the money issue. It also has a bit more street cred than a glorified Impreza. My Turbo S is June build, due some point in late June or early July. Will the Datsun out perform that? Somehow I don't think Porsche will be offering a software upgrade to fix a shit transmission.
Why is this a problem only in the US? The fetish for screaming from one stoplight to another in a dead straight line? And isn't this launch control the same as dumping an automatic into D from the 3500-4500 rpm park limiter? In other words, crap for the transmission but ideal when a-racin' for a-pink slips?
The GT-R doesn't even slip its tires one bit when VDC is left on (which these yanks find undesirable). Which in reality is better for launching since there's no wheelspin that translates into lost traction.
First i like the GT-R. They only feint the problem by decreasing revs+smoother torque curve, overboost, hrottle response too.
Please check how porsche called and use the launch control mode, when you're stuck you don't need the wheels to spin, you'll dig with your tires. For reliability they must fix the transmission cooler which is under estimated and the hardness of the 1st and 2nd pignion gear. Other supercars have launch control for drag launch...
Japs never say it was there fault until it's very late. Same with the WWII and with Toyota. Sad fucks!
Went to Japan for international studies and read some of their high school and university history text books. Extremely biased view on WWII.. Japs will someday pay.. Just look at this Nissan Chief Engineer make shit up with straight face wow just wow
It's seemed like a foolery to say that: "VDC off was made for get out of mud" - OK, but some electronic "helpers" is made so limited that in slippery conditions would rather be off (i dont mean that the electronic in GT-R is limitating).
He said that the tires are spinning while release the brake and the trans is plenty of torque - why not set the trans, when you set VDC off, the full power for RWD, then when the time is passing the power can be transfering power to FWD - more and more and more power (they can calculate it, the traction for FWD can be on the limit but with thinking of power limitating parts in GT-R). When they would do it there will be issues with the trans no more and with awesome acceleration.
the problem happens when you use this setting on tarmack where you already have reasonable grip and dump the clutch at the 4.5K rev limit. the result is faster acceleration as traction control fights to stop the wheels spining. but transmition cant handle that kind of abuse and will undoubtabky break after a few hard launches
VDC helps the cars stability when cornering by correcting over and understear but has little effect from a standing start. when you turn it off off the car relies totaly on a more primitive "TRACTION control" which always trys to provide maximum traction at all 4 wheels when there is slippage (handy in snow funnily enough).
i think its funny every one moaning about the warrenty being void. of corse it will be because your not using the car in a way that it was intended!!
they arnt discontinuing launch control because it was never there. nissan has NEVER called it "launch control" auto testers called it that. it has been in the owners manual from the very begining as a feature to get the car un-stuck in mud or snow.
Sounds like a class action lawsuit to me. I was contemplating picking up a GTR last week and found out about this issue. If they want to sell more cars, and their sales figures have been slipping, they need to come clean on this issue and fix the problem. I am not going to buy any car, especially an 85K high performance car with known issues of reliability and voided warranties by using a factory built feature. They must deliver the 0-60 time, PERIOD
@captainjman1976 Buy a 2010 model with the reprogram ecu that launch the car at 3500rpm and not 4500rpm like before. Less stress on the transmission, no warranty void, and faster acceleration compare to the 2009 model.
LMAO--Launch control is the to get out of the snow!!!! Thats the funniest shit I've heard in a while!!! Wow. CYA to the max. Oh whats that?? You used launch control at the drag strip!?!?! OH NO!!!! Thats just to help get you out of the snow!!!! LMFAO
BULLSHIT !! anyone that worked for nissan or sold a gtr or any nissan knows vdc was marketed the way it is being used in the 2009 models they know dam well they were out to take down the worlds fastest cars all around track and strip ive heard with my own ears a sales marketing/trainer tell us the vdc can be used for faster acceleration they even called it launch contol I.E. acceleration but use with caution 3.4 sec ZR1 beater will sell more cars in the u.s. than 3.9
It would make sense that the warranty becomes void if you use the 'System' in a way that was never intended.... BUT what if you get stuck in snow or "mud" ... if I use it the Warranty still becomes void!??
Either way...I'd get the car if I was presented with the opportunity to own it.
Sounds like BS to me. How many people will get stuck in the snow with an all wheel drive car? The VDC was for performance but the car didn't hold up. This cars VDC has nothing to do with driving in the mud and snow. For those who want to drive in mud and snow will most likely be driving a jeep.
You, my friend, have clearly never heard of the concept of covering your own ass. Yes, he is telling us the VDC on the '09 gtr was designed to get the car our of ice, snow, and mud, but, come on mud? I dont think i would ever plan on offroading in a GTR. This is a clear case of CYOA, and we will likely spend years like kids in the special olympics fighting with each other about it on youtube.
These are not excuses for an unreliable system. VDC Off's use is clearly stated in the owner's manual, and any use outside of this is clearly out of specification for the system.
He states that the suspension will not settle under the torque of the VDC Off mode. Obviously, this is not the way to launch the car. Anyone who says otherwise is either in their teens or totally oblivious to the facts.
I refuse to call VDC Off "launch control", because that's simply not what it is.
Apart fromthe PDK in a porsche which has not yet broke and carries a full warranty for use with launch. You will never ever ever see Porsche having to release a video on how and why they have had to re-programme cars software to stop them blowing up
I'm calibra turbo owner for 5 years now, and I am aware of 4x4 advantages and handicaps. R35 has button that pushed, revs to 4.5k rpm and releasing the brake u have a no mistake acc 0-62 mph in 3.3-3.5 sec, that is called lunch control.. And all so u have ur warranty voided. They described that button as mud escape! which is not. However I am HUGE fan of R35 GTR my self.. sry for my english is bad.
@TheLEETAYLOR Apart a car that cost 1/3 of the price 140000+$ + 20000$ more for the PDK transmission option for the same performance compare to the 90000-$ for the GTR.
@somebody5788 how much torque your quattro put down to the wheel. Your quattro don't have 285 and 255 tires and don't have the grip of the GTR. Just for your information the GTR has more grip than a 911 turbo on the launch.
It's not a Launch Control system. Like the guy said in the video the suspension can't hold it = loosing traction at the start. Anyways no car with awd and 480+hp can't hold lot of start like this (droping the clutch at 4500 rpm) Just try it with a WRX STI and you'll see what will happen
what a waste of money, ppl who buy this only buy it to show off. no one cares, you paid 100gs for this and you blow the tranny from one single launch....buy something cheaper that actually has W.A.R.R.A.N.T.Y
I love the excuses about the LC being for driving in the snow. I never heard of this until people started to destroy trannies. If this is true in which its not, why would someone want to LC in the snow where low rpm's are needed, the LC WAS revving to 45rpm's which is not ideal for slippery conditions. In the snow, lower rpms are idea due to less wheel slip. This excuse makes no sense.
Doesn't make sense to me either. Yet if the guys says that it's in the owner's manual what the "launch control" is for, then I would want to give him the benefit of the doubt.
But are there any GT-R owners in here that can confirm that this info is actually provided in the O.M.?
@local282forlife It is NOT ideal to have as low as possible RPM for slippery conditions - it doesn't matter. What matters is wheel speed, and that is controlled by the clutch. The reason for the high RPM is not to stall the engine because of a sudden dip in grip. What the "launch control" does is make sure you don't spin the tires as much by doing trickery with the clutch, which means that if you use it to launch, it will very quickly tear apart the clutch.
You obviously didn't listen carefully. The GT-R will STALL at 1600 RPM if there is a certain level of wheelspin if VDC is left on, and thus would happen in snow - ie you rev, then suddenly - CUT! The engine's rev limiter kicks in and you don't move. The effect is similar to the anti-stall on F1 cars where rather than cut the engine, the clutch is disengaged if the onboard computer decides the engine might stall on launch, and the car doesn't move.
@local282forlife He was talking about the stall point. Thats like a normal auto transmissions torque converter. Different method same principal. A higher stall point will put less power down so you will have less torque to the wheels and less wheel spin.
@local282forlife the engineer says nissan doesn't call it "launch control." if your car is stuck, VDC OFF allows wheelspin, so you can rock the car back and forth, otherwise it would just sit in place with VDC ON. The manual states you could POTENTIALLY void your warranty with VDC OFF outside of a "stuck" situation. When people turned VDC off to enable "launch control" they put themselves open to voiding warranty, and that's what happened. VDC ON "launch control" is faster, anyway--no wheelspin.
This is really funny - somehow I could never see Porsche having to put out a video saying how their cars need a software upgrade to stop them falling apart.
2010 911 Turbo with PDK Twin Clutch will blow this GTR out of the water. Expect low 3 seconds 0-62. 998 Turbo is once again king without all the flaws. You can launch that bad boy as many times as you want...German engineering...second to none...FACT!
@Ozzy9111 New 997 TurboS due out May 530bhp , warranty on transmission, sub 3 seconds to 60, Porsche is just teasing the Datsun boys. I'm running a 600bhp 997 turbo maunal. I'd be lucky to even get near the PDK turbo, I borrowed one last weekend, the gearbox was unreal.
You have a 997 turbo!! Man am I jealous...lol I own and paid for a 996 Carrera and I love it to death. This performance confirmation just proves how bad ass the upgrade 911 Turbo and S will be.
Ozzy - have had 10 turbos in all - tend to replce every year. Latest one is the only one I have ever had tuned - its 600bhp - sounds awsome but it bordering towards the 'too much power' in certain of situations. Dry days and warm roads are great but we don't get too many of them here. Have Turbo S due in May/June - apparently press release from Porsche is due within next 2 weeks on the Turbo S.
i read in car and driver that the 2009 model with "launch control" did 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, but blew the tranny in the process. the 2010 model has a "launch control" system that's easier on the tranny, but is 0.6 seconds slower to 60.
its probably so they could get those retards once in awhile that will just abuse that feature in times they arent suppose to use it which i guess is like 99% of the time and then get stuck with stealing more money from people on top of the 90k car for a 21k tranny

@adamslurch71 I would think the full potential of this car would be achieved on a track, not in snow or mud.
loudblazer 1 year ago
@loudblazer The true potential is that it can take you anywhere you need to go, just b/c it snows doesn't mean you have to take a different car or a truck, you can drive the car no matter weather conditions. Drive to the track and then to the store for dinner. I perfect balance of all aspects of life in one vehicle. Yes I know it can't off-road but how often do you off-road in daily life just to get to work or school? for most people they don't. Its a great vehicle and works how intended.

Yet another idiot. The American Press (and other idiots) called it Launch Control; Nissan never did. Just look at the manual.
sailorenlil 1 year ago
Why is it as soon as anyone turns off any sort of traction control in any super car everyone all of sudden thinks it "launch control". By turning off the traction control (VDC or whatever its called in certain vehicles) the launch is no longer being controlled, especially in the GTR.

fifthgear93 1 year ago
The gear box in teh GTR is an American BorgWarner; one of the best gearbox companies around.
The first gear cracks on it because of the huge forces on it. This is caused by the big horsepower, massive traction & weight of the car 1700+kgs. Hopefully Borg can create a 1st gear which is able to holdup under these conditions.

TheLEETAYLOR 1 year ago
Why is this a problem only in the US? The fetish for screaming from one stoplight to another in a dead straight line? And isn't this launch control the same as dumping an automatic into D from the 3500-4500 rpm park limiter? In other words, crap for the transmission but ideal when a-racin' for a-pink slips?
thepublandlord1 1 year ago
@thepublandlord1
The burnouts. That's what they want.
The GT-R doesn't even slip its tires one bit when VDC is left on (which these yanks find undesirable). Which in reality is better for launching since there's no wheelspin that translates into lost traction.

blaziankhmer 1 year ago
First i like the GT-R. They only feint the problem by decreasing revs+smoother torque curve, overboost, hrottle response too.
Please check how porsche called and use the launch control mode, when you're stuck you don't need the wheels to spin, you'll dig with your tires. For reliability they must fix the transmission cooler which is under estimated and the hardness of the 1st and 2nd pignion gear. Other supercars have launch control for drag launch...

It's seemed like a foolery to say that: "VDC off was made for get out of mud" - OK, but some electronic "helpers" is made so limited that in slippery conditions would rather be off (i dont mean that the electronic in GT-R is limitating).
streetmichal 1 year ago
He said that the tires are spinning while release the brake and the trans is plenty of torque - why not set the trans, when you set VDC off, the full power for RWD, then when the time is passing the power can be transfering power to FWD - more and more and more power (they can calculate it, the traction for FWD can be on the limit but with thinking of power limitating parts in GT-R). When they would do it there will be issues with the trans no more and with awesome acceleration.
streetmichal 1 year ago
the problem happens when you use this setting on tarmack where you already have reasonable grip and dump the clutch at the 4.5K rev limit. the result is faster acceleration as traction control fights to stop the wheels spining. but transmition cant handle that kind of abuse and will undoubtabky break after a few hard launches
jordanb7426 1 year ago
DO SOME RESEARCH:
VDC helps the cars stability when cornering by correcting over and understear but has little effect from a standing start. when you turn it off off the car relies totaly on a more primitive "TRACTION control" which always trys to provide maximum traction at all 4 wheels when there is slippage (handy in snow funnily enough).
jordanb7426 1 year ago
i think its funny every one moaning about the warrenty being void. of corse it will be because your not using the car in a way that it was intended!!
they arnt discontinuing launch control because it was never there. nissan has NEVER called it "launch control" auto testers called it that. it has been in the owners manual from the very begining as a feature to get the car un-stuck in mud or snow.

pyromaniac1207 1 year ago
Sounds like a class action lawsuit to me. I was contemplating picking up a GTR last week and found out about this issue. If they want to sell more cars, and their sales figures have been slipping, they need to come clean on this issue and fix the problem. I am not going to buy any car, especially an 85K high performance car with known issues of reliability and voided warranties by using a factory built feature. They must deliver the 0-60 time, PERIOD
captainjman1976 1 year ago
@captainjman1976 Buy a 2010 model with the reprogram ecu that launch the car at 3500rpm and not 4500rpm like before. Less stress on the transmission, no warranty void, and faster acceleration compare to the 2009 model.

h38604460 1 year ago
Sounds like BS to me. How many people will get stuck in the snow with an all wheel drive car? The VDC was for performance but the car didn't hold up. This cars VDC has nothing to do with driving in the mud and snow. For those who want to drive in mud and snow will most likely be driving a jeep.

You can get stuck driving anything. You've heard from the engineer. He's told us what it is. Therefore it cannot be anything else. Just believe it.
thingsdemystified 1 year ago
You, my friend, have clearly never heard of the concept of covering your own ass. Yes, he is telling us the VDC on the '09 gtr was designed to get the car our of ice, snow, and mud, but, come on mud? I dont think i would ever plan on offroading in a GTR. This is a clear case of CYOA, and we will likely spend years like kids in the special olympics fighting with each other about it on youtube.

robertinfamous 1 year ago
These are not excuses for an unreliable system. VDC Off's use is clearly stated in the owner's manual, and any use outside of this is clearly out of specification for the system.
He states that the suspension will not settle under the torque of the VDC Off mode. Obviously, this is not the way to launch the car. Anyone who says otherwise is either in their teens or totally oblivious to the facts.
I refuse to call VDC Off "launch control", because that's simply not what it is.

First this is writen in the Owner Manual.

This excuse makes no sense.
local282forlife 1 year ago 8
Doesn't make sense to me either. Yet if the guys says that it's in the owner's manual what the "launch control" is for, then I would want to give him the benefit of the doubt.
But are there any GT-R owners in here that can confirm that this info is actually provided in the O.M.?
CCAAASSSCCAAAA 1 year ago
@CCAAASSSCCAAAA I've got an 09 GTR and I can confirm what they are saying about the owners manual. Its clearly stated.
jaykay4975 1 year ago
@local282forlife It is NOT ideal to have as low as possible RPM for slippery conditions - it doesn't matter. What matters is wheel speed, and that is controlled by the clutch. The reason for the high RPM is not to stall the engine because of a sudden dip in grip. What the "launch control" does is make sure you don't spin the tires as much by doing trickery with the clutch, which means that if you use it to launch, it will very quickly tear apart the clutch.

not enough revs means that the car might rollback, which you do not want when stuck...
203132 1 year ago
@local282forlife
You obviously didn't listen carefully. The GT-R will STALL at 1600 RPM if there is a certain level of wheelspin if VDC is left on, and thus would happen in snow - ie you rev, then suddenly - CUT! The engine's rev limiter kicks in and you don't move. The effect is similar to the anti-stall on F1 cars where rather than cut the engine, the clutch is disengaged if the onboard computer decides the engine might stall on launch, and the car doesn't move.
sailorenlil 1 year ago
@local282forlife He was talking about the stall point. Thats like a normal auto transmissions torque converter. Different method same principal. A higher stall point will put less power down so you will have less torque to the wheels and less wheel spin.
somebody5788 1 year ago
@local282forlife the engineer says nissan doesn't call it "launch control." if your car is stuck, VDC OFF allows wheelspin, so you can rock the car back and forth, otherwise it would just sit in place with VDC ON. The manual states you could POTENTIALLY void your warranty with VDC OFF outside of a "stuck" situation. When people turned VDC off to enable "launch control" they put themselves open to voiding warranty, and that's what happened. VDC ON "launch control" is faster, anyway--no wheelspin.
