i think the ben stiller hate (which i basically agree with) overshadows the fact that this is actually pretty fucking funny. who cares if this is in poor taste? yakov basically sucked america's cock for laughs in the 80s and no one called him out on it.
@theredkatana exactly- this is actually pretty hilarious. Anyone who doesn't know Smirnoff or his horrible schtick would just probably be confused. Their loss!
@ideologger someone should post a video response of smirnoffs lame ass novelty standup and watch the likes on this skyrocket. watch 'yakov smirnoff on broadway' to laugh your ass off. at him, not with him. make sure you take a careful look at his audience
@theredkatana I wish you wouldn't have told me to watch that. It hurts. Stiller's satire is even closer to Yakov's horrific 'comedy' than I remembered.
The thing that makes the whole piece for me is the change in the voiceover, going from a typical comedy show announcer at the beginning to the really ominous narration at the end.
I like both comedians, and to be fair, this was done when Ben was still a young comic in the 90's. Years later when it came out on DVD, during the commentary he mentions how bad he feels about doing this sketch.
I thought this was in poor taste at first, and it still is. But the fall of the Soviet Union really did kill Yakov's career. And all he ever talked about was how much he 'loved Freedom and this country', and going into similarly detailed spiels.
You guys don't get the joke.....Yakov spent his ENTIRE career talking about how bad life was under Soviet rule....until the empire collapsed. So this is poking fun about how he has nothing more to make fun of because the old system failed. And Yakov was never funny, that was just an ugly stereotype.
This is lame for ben stiller, not for Smirnoff. This is not even funny. I'm not even thinking about this is ethically correct or not. This is not good comedy, this is just lame.
Wow a lot of you homos are taking this skit so seriously. it's no wonder classic books like Huckleberry Finn have to be rewritten to get rid of the n-word when you "politically correct, has to not offend anyone, nonrasciest" idiots can't even find a harmless comedy sketch funny but instead have to focus on the negitive like finding one little word to hate on in one of Americas greatest books.
So, a comedian that has never been funny, is trying to be funny by ridiculing a comedian that really was funny, but whose career has faded. Ben is such a great human being.
@CaptainMacNasty Ben Stiller's faded career? What rock have you ben living under? There's Something About Mary, Meet the Parents, Zoolander, The Royal Tenenbaums.: ever hear of these? And he's won an Emmy. Yakov was a flash in the pan. Stiller's the real career comedian here.

@powderyorgan If you were replying to me I said the other person needed a basis to say the show sucked, not this video. I mean one skit doesn't represent a whole show and that some of the other ones are funny. Personally I find this funny, I guess it depends on your sense of humor. If you were not indirectly responding to me then never mind haha. It's just something about the music and how pathetic his jokes are that get me.
@babamuna66 I meant: explain why he or the video is funny. Anyone can do this, and video cut is old hat by now and done a billion times before. If you think about it, you're laughing at others' shortcomings, a trick as old as Shakespeare.. As an anglophile since 4th grade, I'm happy you think I'm American :) But I'm actually Swedish, sans the accent that plagues many of my fellow Swedes and make "a yoke ov the eenglish langvidge". Each to his own, but basically: what @CaptainMacNasty said.
It's not his jokes that make him laugh, it's his blatantly fake laugh and the bad comebacks and him being told to "GET OFF THE STAGE" and the fact it's an advert and that it's advertised as "Yakov Smirnoff" when it's obviously someone who is not as good as an even a comedian inferiour to Yakov Smirnoff with only half his comic ability imho.
@Iamabigblackpoopoo Some of the skits are funny and some aren't, don't be so harsh. This is one of the weakest ones. I for one enjoyed quite a few of them on the show. Do yourself a favor and watch the "Ben Stiller- Drugs Are Bad" skit on Youtube. If you do not laugh at that then this show clearly is not for you. I admit not all of them are good but please have a little more basis for your accusations.
this sucked and i dont find making fun of somebody who did not have alot of freedom before if i didnt not have freedom then moved and had freedom i would talk alot about it to
This was going too far. I get the point though. Yakov relies too much on capitalist prejudice against communism and his racial origin. I'd really like to hear him make jokes that weren't solely related to communism, people suffering in the USSR or language/cultural barriers. It did get old. He's great at what he does but he needs to stop leaning on the same jokes. In Soviet Russia, comedy laugh at you!
@MuggleSnuggles You never laughed during 'Meet the Parents' or 'Meet the Fockers' during a Ben-protagonist scene? Rly? I usually hate cheesy US comedies but I like those. Hm... looking back maybe I didn't laugh at him. Maybe it was Di Nero that made me lulz hard. Still Ben wasn't so bad I noticed him, which makes me think he can act well. However, that doesn't mean his comedy is good. I remember more scenes of him sweating or looking afraid. He was good at those like any other high level actor.
@ShayLee0501 No, I never laughed during those movies because I never saw them. "There's Something About Mary" was okay, but Matt Dillon and the dog stole the show for me. Only saw it once, though, because it was too filthy. Yakov could have done a better Zoolander, no doubt.
@MuggleSnuggles You thought "There's Something About Mary" was filthy? I haven't seen it but I got the impression from marketing that it your usual sort of light hearted comedy aimed a family audience? What was filthy about it? Cameron Diaz looked so 'wholesome' with her short hair on the trailers I remember.
Ben only wishes he had as much carisma and originality as Yakov. Perhaps Its not bens fault he was probably only doing what he was told to do. "cough sellout cough"
Ben Stiller could never compare to the humor and greatness of Yakov Smirnoff. Yakof was genuine and hilarious. Considering the obstacles he had to hurdle to get where he is today, it is truly amazing. Morons like Ben Stiller take for granted the freedoms we have, in Soviet Russia, there was no freedom. @Kalikus808 i agree with you about the taking freedoms for granted. the reason so many people are such arogent asssholes is because they have never had to fight for anything in their life. i never heard of ben stiller being a comedian until now i thought it was a bit with Mr. smirnoff but when i realized it was this i just stopped and decided to watch southpark
Spelling "person" as "preson"? Were you tapping away angrily on a cancer-causing cellphone? Hey, missing brain cells is the ONLY way to fully enjoy Yakov Smirnoff's corny schtick, so you're halfway there! Ben Stillers' TV show languished at the BOTTOM of the ratings, on FOX, before it was a real player in the TV game, on SUNDAY at 9:30--a dead zone. Besides which, YES--I'm sure Stiller thought Smirnoff was a hack, but the concept wasn't ABOUT that. No matter what you assert. Sentence finished.
I never knew Stiller was an idiot, he trashes Yakov for adapting to liberalism (which doesnt have freedom aswell i might ad, stagnant markets ftw eh?) and then he trashes socialism - it really didnt work well for the scandinavian countries if you look at lists of technological advancement or just pure wealth & efficiency. Just like working price competition real communism has only worked in the initial implementation phase, value of structure has bound both the incomplete systems over time. 145+
@lassek85 Another person that can't express himself clearly, "i" might "ad". Uh, I think you don't get the comedy...he's merely addressing the idea that Smirnoff's act was based on the Soviet system....and with that gone--HE HAS NO ACT. THAT'S THE ENTIRE JOKE. THERE'S NO POLITICAL UNDERCURRENT, IDIOT.
@lassek85 First off, there ARE things like punctuation in grammar, but that's just this "preson" 's
little pet peeve. As to your larger point....Ben Stiller WASN'T a big star at that point; in fact, he was on a show NO ONE was WATCHING. Secondly, he was joking about the idea that Smirnoff's act was to compare the Soviet system of oppression to the American system of Capitalism. But since Glasnost changed that--Smirnoff couldn't use that as a source of humor anymore. OKAY?
@whackawhack I so SorR. I dint NOw MYe speling twaS beeng Gradedd n the interntt liKE mAYH CollAGE RITE? Because, I didn't know it mattered that much on the internet where people tend to just relax and watch videos... spelling nazi.
Yes attack my spelling, that will show me! (and please finish your sentences, that showed you, eh?)
He was, he had allreay landed his name in some known movies, Empire of the sun obv. being the largest.
Seing how he had his own TV-show praised by critics (including 3 emmy awards) that would be another notch for him versus Yakov Smirnoff for being a brighter shining star.
I dont think you understood my political point vs this joke. This isnt a roast, this is worse.
@whackawhack It would be nice if people used punctuation, but that's just one "preson"s pet peeve. As to your larger point....first of all, at the time of this sketch, Ben Stiller was NOT a big star. In fact, NO ONE was WATCHING the show. Second, he was merely pointing out that Smirnoff's comedic persona was based on comparing the Soviet system of oppression with American Capitalism. But with Glasnost, he couldn't mine that source for material any longer. JESUS, is it THAT hard to understand?
@haxor758 Who the fuck is correcting you? I'm pointing out a simple fact. Yeah, you're right....people on the internet just relax and take it easy and call people "spelling nazis"--yeah, you seem completely CHILL. And I made a mistake when I responded to myself. So when I make a mistake, that's stupid, but when you misspell, you're just relaxing?
@whackawhack yup cuz no one gives a shit about spelling on the internet. It gives us all the pressure of spell checking and punctuating everything correctly in college
@haxor758 I thought people were more relaxed on the internet? If you're so relaxed, you can take the time to make something look intelligible and literate....to check what you wrote before you post it. Oh, why bother even EXPLAINING it to you? Keep defending your right to be stupid. Go for it. But I'm done responding.
@whackawhack Yep that's right just shut you the fuck up. You don't even know what to say. If it's such the right to be stupid why am i taking the time to respond to you like this. I kold be taking liek this cuz no one rally cars about spelling on the internet
People can't seem to distinguish between "The Ben Stiller show" Stiller and the and the Focker-era Stiller, essentially two different people. His tv show was hilarious and he was great in it. Also, everyone seems to be getting offended on Yakov's behalf over something the comedian himself probably laughed at.
@ReeseMac He says it in the commentary during this sketch on the Ben Stiller Show DVD. I'd love to show you personally but i lost my copy of the DVD years ago.
The difference between Ben Stiller and Yakov Smirnoff: when I watch Yakov on youtube I laugh... when I watch Ben Stiller I don't even smile and feel angry that he could mock someone so much greater than him.
@ImWatchinTheTube Here's the real difference. Yakov has his own unique kind of humor. He doesn't care if you laugh, he's happy that he gets to do what he does. Unlike Ben Stiller, who's just another comedian.
@slatanicslaughter ...I mean that the skit is prophetic in regards to his stand-up career. Yakov did seem to fade away from the public spotlight after the fall of Communism.
Yakov Smirnoff didn't deserve this skit. Smirnoff was probably overjoyed that the USSR broke up. The skit wasn't funny and seemed more like rubbing it in to Yakov.
"...I am cold....I am frightened....what will the New World Order bring for Yakov?"....The reality of his shortcomings as a comic has crippled him so much that its made him curl up on the stage in fear. He's losing his mind....LMAO!!...aaaw poor , Yakov......LMAO. This show was great.
I love this skit. 99% of Yakov Smirnoff's act back in the 80's was goofing on the repression of communism in Russia but since communism fell his act was pretty much wiped out and , interestingly , Yakov's career actually did fade away after the fall of communism..........so in a way there was prophetic truth in this skit.
@robertocarlosibarra I bet he doesn't care about you too bitch! You're just fucked up for replying to my comment dumb shit. In Soviet Russia you are still dumb bitch!
Terrible. And to those that will tell me "don't watch the video you think it sucks"...I didn't watch the video until now and NOW I have an opinion of it.
Because it isn't a good hearted poke at the Russian Reversal humor Smirnoff was known for. It was a trashing of a comedian that had fallen from grace because his act wasn't relevant anymore. Take away the window dressing and it is a 7 year old pointing their finger and giggling at someone that fell off a swingset.
553 people not like this? Something is wrong with this country!

The Ben Stiller Show is really damn good, and all these sensitive trollers should cut off their ballsacks and wear them as ski masks. Said and done.
JeonardShadby505 1 year ago
I never knew Stiller was an idiot, he trashes Yakov for adapting to liberalism (which doesnt have freedom aswell i might ad, stagnant markets ftw eh?) and then he trashes socialism - it really didnt work well for the scandinavian countries if you look at lists of technological advancement or just pure wealth & efficiency. Just like working price competition real communism has only worked in the initial implementation phase, value of structure has bound both the incomplete systems over time. 145+
lassek85 1 year ago
@lassek85 Another person that can't express himself clearly, "i" might "ad". Uh, I think you don't get the comedy...he's merely addressing the idea that Smirnoff's act was based on the Soviet system....and with that gone--HE HAS NO ACT. THAT'S THE ENTIRE JOKE. THERE'S NO POLITICAL UNDERCURRENT, IDIOT.
whackawhack 1 year ago
@whackawhack
Just because you cannot understand the point of the other preson doesnt mean he or she does not express him or herself clearly.
Yes there is, to how Ben Stiller acts, im explaining why i think he's an idiot.
To explain my view better for you - this is one big star trying to put an end to a little star.
lassek85 1 year ago

Because, I didn't know it mattered that much on the internet where people tend to just relax and watch videos... spelling nazi.
haxor758 1 year ago
@whackawhack
This isnt a roast, this is worse.
lassek85 1 year ago
@whackawhack It would be nice if people used punctuation, but that's just one "preson"s pet peeve. As to your larger point....first of all, at the time of this sketch, Ben Stiller was NOT a big star. In fact, NO ONE was WATCHING the show. Second, he was merely pointing out that Smirnoff's comedic persona was based on comparing the Soviet system of oppression with American Capitalism. But with Glasnost, he couldn't mine that source for material any longer. JESUS, is it THAT hard to understand?
whackawhack 1 year ago
@whackawhack Also why the fuck did you respond to yourself
haxor758 1 year ago
@haxor758 Who the fuck is correcting you? I'm pointing out a simple fact. Yeah, you're right....people on the internet just relax and take it easy and call people "spelling nazis"--yeah, you seem completely CHILL. And I made a mistake when I responded to myself. So when I make a mistake, that's stupid, but when you misspell, you're just relaxing?
whackawhack 1 year ago
@whackawhack yup cuz no one gives a shit about spelling on the internet. It gives us all the pressure of spell checking and punctuating everything correctly in college
haxor758 1 year ago
@haxor758 I thought people were more relaxed on the internet? If you're so relaxed, you can take the time to make something look intelligible and literate....to check what you wrote before you post it. Oh, why bother even EXPLAINING it to you? Keep defending your right to be stupid. Go for it. But I'm done responding.
whackawhack 1 year ago
@whackawhack Yep that's right just shut you the fuck up. You don't even know what to say. If it's such the right to be stupid why am i taking the time to respond to you like this. I kold be taking liek this cuz no one rally cars about spelling on the internet
haxor758 1 year ago
People can't seem to distinguish between "The Ben Stiller show" Stiller and the and the Focker-era Stiller, essentially two different people. His tv show was hilarious and he was great in it. Also, everyone seems to be getting offended on Yakov's behalf over something the comedian himself probably laughed at.

The difference between Ben Stiller and Yakov Smirnoff: when I watch Yakov on youtube I laugh... when I watch Ben Stiller I don't even smile and feel angry that he could mock someone so much greater than him.
ImWatchinTheTube 1 year ago 28
@ImWatchinTheTube Here's the real difference. Yakov has his own unique kind of humor. He doesn't care if you laugh, he's happy that he gets to do what he does. Unlike Ben Stiller, who's just another comedian.

@slatanicslaughter ...I mean that the skit is prophetic in regards to his stand-up career. Yakov did seem to fade away from the public spotlight after the fall of Communism.
ReeseMac 1 year ago
Yakov Smirnoff didn't deserve this skit. Smirnoff was probably overjoyed that the USSR broke up. The skit wasn't funny and seemed more like rubbing it in to Yakov.

Stiller's a douchebag of the highest order and about as funny as watching a dead man void his bowels.

This skit ended up being why Ben Stiller stopped doing a lot of impressions, he felt bad that Yakov actually was never heard from again.

ReeseMac 1 year ago
I love this skit. 99% of Yakov Smirnoff's act back in the 80's was goofing on the repression of communism in Russia but since communism fell his act was pretty much wiped out and , interestingly , Yakov's career actually did fade away after the fall of communism..........so in a way there was prophetic truth in this skit.

@DrunkJesse
