Siepi was wonderful. Though there's something that bugs me about his Figaro here - he sounds so happy and jolly for someone who has just found out that his boss is trying to seduce his bride-to-be.
I think maybe I've been conditioned to see this as a more serious moment (which, dramatically, it is), while in the '50s this was played more for comedy. Certainly Siepi executes this approach superbly.
I of I @thesafekind . Thank you for your comment. I think what is accentuating some factors you are underlining are the echo of the voice practiced in recordings of that area and the acceleration of tempo after the introduction adding a "joyful" feeling. If you get a translation words by words of this aria I think Siepi takes it as a "joke"in saying you want to"Ballare" well you will see.
His voice was far over the common bass voices. Nowadays we have a GREAT italian bass, that is Colombara (basso cantante and bass-baritone with an astonishing voice).
Siepi, one of my favorite opera singers ever, had a very particular and unique voice. His timbro was far more dark and glowing and rich than ANY other bass.
Many TRUE basses don't have an half of his voice...
By the way, have you heard Siepi's magnificent performance on "Some Enchanted Evening" on YouTube? I don't ever expect to hear a more perfect realization of this song, which for me puts Pinza to shame.
I listen to Siepi sing "Some Enchanted Evening" at least once a week! Though I can't agree it puts Pinza to shame, as that's not possible, it's my favorite version overall. Siepi's voice is just so gorgeous and smooth. BTW, go listen to Robert Merrill's live version with orchestra here on Youtube. It's gorgeous. The aria of Fillipo from Don Carlo with Siepi is simply astounding. Best basso cantante ever.
Love thiose double Ls in "Se vuol BaL'Lare..." It is shocking to me how many singers just don't bother to correctly pronounce Italian consonants. Siepi is my favorite basso; I just love the sound of his voice, and he was also a magnificent, versatile artist. For me , he was a superior Figaro, Mephistopheles, Don Giovanni, Sparafucile, Philip, and many other roles too numerous to mention.
Totally secure technically, excellent interpretation, AND in style. And from a singer who also did Verdi! And Verdi in style, too. It is almost not humanly possible to switch so well and so convincingly.
Aside from loving his voice, you have to admire his beautiful diction and musicality. It sounded so fresh and new - that is what makes him a great singer for all times.
Yes, the great Siepi! Phenomenal voice and stage presence. Greatest Don Giovanni, etc, etc.!

And he can do Mozart's Dark. One of the few Don Giovanni's I have seen engulfed in flame.

II OF II He also anticipates the end of the opera with "all ends well" with Il Conte who did not obtain what he wanted. Just a thought. Best.

The only person I could call his equal is Ferruccio Furlanetto, but Ferruccio looked at Siepi as his biggest influence.
