Interesting I am part of the Roycroft family in New Zealand whom migrated from Ireland and our family tree dates back currently to France 1230AD with Robert de Rycroft. Keen to make contact with Roycrofts.
I am also a Roycroft (not a very common name I think.) It is my understanding that the name Roycroft comes from term "Royal Craftsman" which were the artisans who made products for royalty - so of the highest quality. It therefor makes sense that Hubbard chose this name for his campus and what it produced.
hey there, xcgeek thanks for getting back to me am very intrigued that you are also a crofty, i have never met or talked to a roycroft outside my family, i have information and the like on the origin of the name if your interested?
I think one of my relatives has a good family tree of the Roycrofts tracing it back a while - at least here in Canada anyway. Don't know if it goes back to when the name came over from Briton. I'll see if they want to pursue it further. Cheers.
The Roycroft Inn is located on South Grove (across the street fron the rest of the campus) they have fully restored the Inn it's beautiful inside The antiques shop is still there in the big Green building way in the back the copper shop is now a tea house the power house is all but gone from the fire it's really sad they have been doing alot of repairs to the campus in recent years.
And I am from Eastern North Carolina. The only problem I have with Elbert is that he discarded his mother's "religion." He knocks the churches of his time. Of his books to collect are his ELBERT HUBBARD'S SCRAP BOOK and his ELBERT HUBBARD'S NOTE BOOK. PIG PEN PETE and many others are collectables. I am looking for his SELECTED WRITINGS OF ELBERT HUBBARD. a set with many volumes. And the Biography by FELIX SHAY is very desirable. And his MESSAGE TO GARCIA read it online!!
It seems so few know of this man. I found a book at least 20 years ago written by Elbert's son Bert called "IMPRESSIONS." It is a signed copy (1923) This book became the reason for a vacation there to see if the buildings were still there. I was Amazed to find when driving through East Aurora NY that they WERE!! One of the buildings then housed an antique shop. I bought a New OLD stock set of Little Journeys, a 14-volume set I really recommend. You can find these. An incredibly smart man.

Where's the Roycroft inn? It was there but in bad repair when I first went there in the 80's.
