I heard this song this morning in the car - what memories! Thanks for posting. I checked out their website and they're still going strong - kudos to them!!
I consider this as my second-favorite recording of all-time, with No. 1 being "Times of Your Life" by Paul Anka. I never get tired of listening to this.
DAAMMMNN---what a true "relic" from the past. I remember this song from when I was in junior high. Seems like yesterday and yet from another lifetime. Frankie Avalon---what ever happened to him?--is he still amoungst us "kids"?? Thanx for posting!
This footage is from a 11/30/63 TV special, "Dick Clark's Celebrity Party." It was shot at a "home in Hollywood," (which was actually Frankie Avalon's house in Bel Air). The timing of the broadcast was awkward, being just a week after the J.F.K. assassination. In addition to this number, other performers included Dick and Dee Dee ("Turn Around") and Trini Lopez ("Kansas City"). Beach Party movie star Annette Funicello and future Beach Party star Donna Loren also perform numbers.
In Denver we have agreat oldies station- KEZW- I had heard there that during the session Nino kepty forgetting the words- while April 'fed' them to hi- as heard in the song. During playback, they liked it so much that this was how it was released! Awesome song!
Check out the Artie Shaw/Helen Forrest version too. It's also super good.

I remember vividly a very depressing early December 1963 shopping trip to a Kresge's
department store in Trenton, New Jersey and hearing this song coming over the speakers from the record department.
As you said it was quite awkward so soon after John F. Kennedy's assassination.
Whenever I hear this song I can't help but revisit that moment. A great song tho.
The exhubrance of the Beatles 3 months later in Feb 1964 started to lift us as a country out of our collective depression.
