I am from Iowa, do not live there now, and as my husband and I are former U of Iowa athletes, we know numerous players that Alford coached. During his tenure @ Iowa he gradually became this coach that many fans grew to dislike, and the smug, arrogant attitude in public was obvious....and I guess you can say he acknowledged the fans with that same character. There is no excuse for Coach Alford's actions. Regardless the "trash talk" said from Tavernari, Alford should have been poised, ignore the comments, and continue to walk away. Would you ever see any other reputable, top-notch Division I coach like Williams or Krzyzewski display such hostile, childish behavior?? His arrogant, condescending persona at Iowa proved to be a downfall in his career and he will sooner than later lead New Mexico down that path. I have no respect for this coach.
Steve Alfords actions were unacceptable to say the least but he is still a great coach and a good man. As a Hawkeye fan living in NM, I've watched Alford coach for as long as almost anybody. He left Iowa because it was a poor basketball environment. He left Iowa having been to multiple NCAA tournaments and coaching several great players to successful careers. Luke Recker, Reggie Evans, Jeff Horner, Adam Haluska; Ive watched them all. UNM will continue to do great with Alford...guaranteed.
Alford's belligerent behavior was unacceptable. His Big Ten conf. win/loss % at Iowa is mediocre; nothing that shines by any means and maybe give him kudos for winning one conf. tourney title. Horner committed his fresh. yr in H.S., way before Alford's tenure. Haluska only became a Hawkeye because no longer could he play for the psycho, ISU coach, Larry Eustachy. Recker transferred from Indiana after an injury. New Mexico should be embarrassed of his actions.

I am from Iowa, do not live there now, and as my husband and I are former U of Iowa athletes, we know numerous players that Alford coached. During his tenure @ Iowa he gradually became this coach that many fans grew to dislike, and the smug, arrogant attitude in public was obvious....and I guess you can say he acknowledged the fans with that same character. Not impressive at all!!!!

when it became time for a interview on tv he acted all happy what an ass after the ncaa selection show ended here is the real kicker! in between interviews people were wanting his autograph did he even pay attention? nope he kept on walking AGAIN ignoring the fans i've met this guy twice once he was nice cause it was public then the other i had to chase him down to even get a hello or a picture of him sound like the same guy you knew?

There is no excuse for Coach Alford's actions. Regardless the "trash talk" said from Tavernari, Alford should have been poised, ignore the comments, and continue to walk away. Would you ever see any other reputable, top-notch Division I coach like Williams or Krzyzewski display such hostile, childish behavior?? His arrogant, condescending persona at Iowa proved to be a downfall in his career and he will sooner than later lead New Mexico down that path. I have no respect for this coach.

Steve Alfords actions were unacceptable to say the least but he is still a great coach and a good man. As a Hawkeye fan living in NM, I've watched Alford coach for as long as almost anybody. He left Iowa because it was a poor basketball environment. He left Iowa having been to multiple NCAA tournaments and coaching several great players to successful careers. Luke Recker, Reggie Evans, Jeff Horner, Adam Haluska; Ive watched them all. UNM will continue to do great with Alford...guaranteed.

Alford's belligerent behavior was unacceptable. His Big Ten conf. win/loss % at Iowa is mediocre; nothing that shines by any means and maybe give him kudos for winning one conf. tourney title. Horner committed his fresh. yr in H.S., way before Alford's tenure. Haluska only became a Hawkeye because no longer could he play for the psycho, ISU coach, Larry Eustachy. Recker transferred from Indiana after an injury. New Mexico should be embarrassed of his actions.

wow might have ruined his chance for coach of the year but the players know Alford's got their back and so they can ignore it and focus. But just so you know Tavenari's a douche bag. Alford shouldn't have reacted like that but he shook Tavenari's hand and told him he's a good player and then Tav. told Alford that his team was a joke and acted like a complete "Ass hole" as Alford blatantly stated.

please get your facts straight. Cause as a matter of fact BYU IS a ranked team and Lobos just swept them in the Marriot center, on senior night, sell out crowd with only oh maybe 25 - 30 UNM fans in attendance. I was there and i saw all the crap that went on, after the game the fans were throwing stuff at the UNM players and even the refs who called probably the best game ever with an even 18 - 18 fouls.

This comment was triggered by when the couch shook is his hand he said told tavenari something to the affect of, he was a good player, tavenari was mad about the loss and made some bad comments which triggered the couch reacting this way. I had to mention this as well.... it's great to see UNM's fan base show up for something. The only problem is that they're defending their win like they didn't deserve it. I keep reading posts like "quit whining" and "ain't nothing going to change the score", but I can't find any trace of whining or excuse making, so how about you guys pretend you've been in this position before and enjoy the win. And as far as the "Mormon" comments, lol, yeah, how stupid for people to actually have convictions!

you can't find any trace of whining? i was there and all i heard ALL GAME LONG around me was "ah wheres the foul come on!!" or after the game i got "shut up, and quit acting like a jack ass" and most of all 12 separate people came up and said either "isn't it sad when the referees win the game instead of the players or drive safely home with your referees" so if that isn't whining or an excuse... then buddy i don't know what dictionary your looking in..

For all of those defending Alford, watch how he comes up behind Tavenari (admittedly a hot head) and says something in his ear. I doubt he's saying "you're a good player", why would would Tavenari respond by saying "what are you going to do about it?" Ha ha, even funnier is how UNM's assistant coach is getting in on it calling him a "Punk *$# ". My hats off to the lobos for playing a great game, but its too bad a coaching staff can't refrain from shouting obscenities at a 23 year old.
