Well, a great idea, but a whole building covered with solar cell panels like that would require a vast amount of money, because I know those panels cost a lot.
I really, really, really love this concept. It's something futuristic & cutting edge, right out of Dubai. Although to be frank & pragmatic, I don't see this realistically coming to fruition in New Orleans...simply because New Orleans is a city which prides itself on authenticity and keeping up the appearance of its older structures, or old world charm, if you will.
So this architectural wonder would be more plausible somewhere else, like New York or Miami.

Nice rendering and animation project. As for the real world application, building this arcology, the architects behind it should maybe have a rethink. Many of the designs look pretty and functional, but look like updates of the features included in many of the high rise public housing projects in the UK, designed or inspired by Le Corbusier, which are now being pulled down and replaced with low rise housing, as, although they were technically innovative, they were socially unworkable.

btw @ everlasingwicca: True that we architects have to eat but why dont you think about the ethical implications of building this gaudy monstrosity when they havent even handled the simple problems of REbuilding the damage This is just a shameless distraction so we dont have to think about any REAL issues
perhaps not so much in new orleans but ithink that in the more north you go the more important it becomes to utilize the emitted heat of the building to grow food. For example here in vancouver you can grow some things all year round if grown on a roof top. There has been other studies that suggest that flora helps moderate temperature.
NOLA 'mid. Tough as nails. Wouldn't last a day in there without the proper hardware. City stopped funding it as of '52. Then the corporations backed out. Now the place is ruled by a mixture of local toughs and a handful of quasi-legitimate mafia-run corporate interests that stuck around post collapse. The faster I leave, the better.
Anyone wondering about the purpose for one of these things could look into the UN agenda of population control and smart cities. This is not just for fun.
And your evidence for that is....where? Surely, arcologies being designed to hold LOTS of people would be completely contradictory to your idea of population control....

These people are not the first to start building arcologies. New arcologies are being build and showcased. And some will inhabit over 70 thousand people. However this will be only available in the future when the population is too hard to control.
This thing is too industrial-looking and does not belong anywhere near the Quarter! What is it supposed to be? Some sort of a floating refuge in case of a flood? How many people can you put in there? If it's just a 'visualisation" - it's a total waste of time and money....
@IrinaNOLA So...the pyramids which have inspired everything from literature to film, music and architecture, politics and tourism were..."A total waste of time and money"?! Hm, sometimes visual architectural art like this and the pyramids, the engravings in Chile, the ziggurats, the garden of Babylon, etc. simply inspires, for a loong time. I wouldn't go and call that a waste.

It includes levees as part of the city structure and design (which doesn't float). i think all major cities should be building arcologies they are great in so many ways and one major way is urban sprawl less impact on the farm land meant to feed us and also the wetlands and deforestation
For what it's worth and for the uneducated, many parts of the U.S. are at or below sea level including the Nation's Capital - D.C. That being said, we don't really need a giant glowing prism blocking the river. If we could somehow render a 3-d solution to our eroding coastlines that were decimated by the oil industry, THEN we might be on to something. It's not a very unique concept though. Paolo Soleri already started building one in the desert, but I don't think his floats.

Beautiful. Some very negative comments there. Think of the iconic modern structures in Paris etc. One needs to be imaginative, not forgetting to consult fully with the people who will actually continue to live there.
For New Orleans, I'd say we shouldn't be encouraging people to live in areas that are below current or future sea level. Indeed, we should be getting them to move out. Why should the rest of us pay to continue to rescue these people?
That said, this structure should probably be considered as the default for any new high-rise buildings. The shape seems inherently stronger and safer, such as for surviving earthquakes or tornadoes.
@TheCombatFetus -you know i hate people like you......you most likely have never been to the city.....and you most likely live in some boring country town with no presents ......just because you think you know something does not mean that you should comment it any way you want......

The shape seems inherently stronger and safer, such as for surviving earthquakes or tornadoes.

this looks dumb. just live somewhere else, don't spend all this money on a project that will most likely fail or be unwanted.
