@BambinoDoll Don't. The Dog Might See the Money in the Wallet and talk in Dog Voice: "Gold! Must Have it!" Then Steal your Cash. Keep Cash Away from Dogs
I like this one as I am always telling people that if they really want to understand their pups just sit back and watch them play and interact with other dogs.
The way they use body language to communicate with each other can really help us to understand how they think
my dog is not very interested in frisbees... Not even squeak toys! I'm thinking of putting a dab of peanut butter on her frisbee, would that be a good idea? I don't want my dog interested in her frisbee only if it has peanut butter on it, someone help me Dx
I have a dumb question. Let me set up the background, here. My dog is SUPER observant. I'm noticing that when he sees me add a new move to our "routine" he begins to rely on it as part of the trick. For instance, when I begin to move the object, he relies on that as a 'step' in the process. Throw, chase, drop, [i kick it around] and then he grabs it. Does that make sense? Any pointers? :)
@JaraAnton I'm not affiliated with this video, but I can tell you what he would probably do. What he's teaching in this video is how to shape behavior, in order to withdraw yourself from needing to prompt your dog you need to use something called "fading."
Fading is when you use less prompting and less prompting until none is needed. So, if your dog needs you to kick the frisbee around before he picks it up, then use progressively smaller kicks until you are just tapping the disk.
@JaraAnton Then to just one tap, then to motioning with your foot, and so on.
Obviously your dog might get it without all these steps, but what's really important in fading is never to go faster than your dog can understand.
So let's say you're down to just tapping the disk and your dog is coming along swimmingly, however you move from several taps to just one and your dog suddenly looses interest and comprehension and the behavior you want isn't being executed.
@JaraAnton On the next try you immediately go back to the last step he understood and follow it through to completion. Then on the try after than you maybe use one less tap than before, and so on. It's important to go back to where your dog last understood.
ANYWAY, I feel soooo long winded. I learned this for my work helping with behavioral modification at a home for the developmentally disabled. But don't worry, this works with everyone. Including dogs, kids, and coworkers. >.>
hmm... i manage to train it to bring the ball back.. but he wouldnt let go. =( how do i make it give me the ball? ive even tried it with treats. it got worst coz he wouldnt even go for the ball. hell look for abit then try get the food off my hand (and no i didnt give him)
What if the dog doesn't want to give you the toy back. Do I just rip it out of my dogs mouth? Because he is getting really strong and it takes a while to do that. Keep up the videos Zak!
Very helpful. It's especially helpful to see what to do when they aren't a natural at either the catching or the returning. And another way to play without just tossing the disc and standing there for the dog to bring it back. Loved the other footage, too!
I just wanted to let you know that I just got a Border Collie puppy and I LOVE watching your videos. They always show me some important part of training that I wasn't doing (such as NOT picking the frisbee up when the dog drops it).
Thanks so much and keep posting training videos! :-D
Hello ! I heard you say that you don't get as much comments as you expected. So here I am ! Your channel and videos are great. Got me addicted!
I got my dog Kodah in a "refuge" (sorry, i probably use the wrong word.. i'm french, english is not my first langage) few months ago and he has problems with smaller dogs. He really enjoy playing with bigger ones. When he plays with a smaller dog, it's okay for 1minut but he always ends up chasing and attacking it! Do you have an explanation ? : )
Isn't it true that the little dog in the dog park should have the sweater off in order to be able to be an equal part of the pack? That a dog in a sweater will be at a marked disadvantage with regards to socializing with the others? Never mind his size, the big dogs and the little dog all know that something isn't quite natural.
Aha I love how you treat your dogs like they're kids :) That's really what they are, kids inside a dog's body xP I also love how you show us the process of thinking for the dogs, it really helps to get a better understanding. :) Thanks for the great videos! :D
such a playful chihuahua. I have two, along with my boxer pup. One loves other dogs, but doesn't run around and play. The other loves people, also doesn't play lol. My boxer hasn't had much socializing yet. Just got her last shot today and looking forward to taking her to the dog park
Hey Zak! My dog knows the command "bring", but she usually drops it in front of me. I first realized that behavior, when my grandma (who is not really able to bend down anymore) tried to throw her sticks.. I tried it with tug games, but it didn't work out. Do you have any other ideas? Wishes from Germany - Anna =)
Fixing your dog, you turn an animal into a toy. How fucking stupid can people people be. Let someone chop your peter off and see how it feels or stick a cork in your hole.
My dog smiles on his own. I would like to get him to do this on command. He's a smart boy and I'm sure he'd pick it right up like everything else, i'm just not sure how to go about it. thanks! -Nancy & Beans
I like that idea. I'd like to see a video on that. Also, I and many other people would like to see a video on housetraining using the clicker, rather than yelling, whooping etc.
Hi Zak! Love your vids. I need some advice. My dog loves to fetch, but he doesn't use his mouth to catch things. He tends to use his paws and catch things as if he is a football players or something. How do I make him use his mouth to make that perfect Frisbee catch?
What is your problem?! If you don't like th video or dogs then why are you here? You obviously love dogs if you're watching this video. Let's use our heads and not our mouths and learn to keep things to ourselves. What sense does it make to watch something you hate? Common dude...I'm sure dogs are smarter than you. Zak, please remove his or her comment that he or she made.
hey zak am trying to teach my dog how to play Frisbee and he pays attention and is interested in playing but when i trow it at him to catch he either gets it on the air with his legs or runs away n gets it when it falls down and i dont know what to do can u plez help??
I second the request to hear your thoughts on training "aggressive" dogs. Have you ever had to train a dog to be friendly to people and/or dogs or cats? I am interested in adopting a dog, likely a pit bull mix, and I am worried about people's reactions, and I'd like to train and socialize my dog to be as friendly as possible. Do you have any tips?
Hey, when is your show going to have a new episode. I have been watching animal planet but the only ones that ever come on are the ones that I have seen so many times. I love your show a lot and love to see the cool tricks. Have you ever had to deal with training an agressive dog? love the video, you should do it for awhile the video a day thing. lol nova sure does talk funny. I like how he calls kelly lady, lol so funny. Lol that chihuahua is top dog, how funny is that!! Callie has a boyfriend
I've subscribed and most of your videos are on my favorite list =) I tried this on my dog and it worked really well!!! Thank you so much! I tried every other way and this was the only one that really worked well! Thanks Zak!
I love your dogs' voices. I had no idea that's what they sounded like. ;) Hmm, I think I might have to start feeding my dog two small children in the morning ... sounds like a good method.
we are going with a trainner and i have been learning the basic things he is proggresing but when we are in our free time my dog is always biting and jumping to me.... and i cant stop him... its sooo frustrating, the trainner tells me that the dog doesnt respect me in a sort way but i dont know what to do... i try to be patient but goshhh some time its to hard... please.. i need an advice...
Hey, I seen your comment and could not, not reply. I am also a dog trainer, not nearly as talented as Zak but, whenever your dog bits you, let out a loud yelp. Like you know when gangsters say ight instead of alright. Just make that noise but really loud, like a puppy. ur dog will then know that he hurt u. When ever ur dog jumps on you, if sitting down, stand up, turn your back to the dog, cross your arms and do these 3 things. No touch, no talk, no eye contact. Do this until the dog walks away.
zak, can you set up a tripod and record when you play frisbee with your 3 dogs at the park then edit it down so we can see the catch of the day. and maybe a few clips for the mvp?
Love your videos but this "tactic" doesnt work on my border! :) If I run away she keeps the disc and chases after me, and if I ask her to release, she runs away again... I've also tried to lay down and play like a dog but that disc is still hers, she never lets go. And if I get another disc in there, she takes it to, not releasing the other one, shes 4½ months old! :)
@mrsarun practice "let go" with all kinds of stuff, maybe start with something thats easier to let go like a ball or a stick, using food in the beginning to pursuade can be helpfull to!
@mrsarun have you tried a short throw game where she is on a really long lead, especially if you have a harness and not a collar that will choke her, then when she runs to with the disk you can gently reel her in if she darts away and exchange the disk for a treat or another disk. If she is food motivated something really yummy that requires her dropping the disk to eat it, followed by lots of praise and more fun. Be careful of jerking or choking though, don't throw the disk far. hope it helps.
thats the name of my dog.. and she is a pitbull too

I love your dogs' voices. I had no idea that's what they sounded like. ;) Hmm, I think I might have to start feeding my dog two small children in the morning ... sounds like a good method.

Do this until the dog walks away.

zak, can you set up a tripod and record when you play frisbee with your 3 dogs at the park then edit it down so we can see the catch of the day. and maybe a few clips for the mvp?
i think that would be really cool

Love your videos but this "tactic" doesnt work on my border! :) If I run away she keeps the disc and chases after me, and if I ask her to release, she runs away again... I've also tried to lay down and play like a dog but that disc is still hers, she never lets go. And if I get another disc in there, she takes it to, not releasing the other one, shes 4½ months old! :)
mrsarun 2 years ago
@mrsarun practice "let go" with all kinds of stuff, maybe start with something thats easier to let go like a ball or a stick, using food in the beginning to pursuade can be helpfull to!
bruzedup 2 years ago
Yeah shes really good when it comes to let go, at home, but once shes of the leash she will not come near me if she got a toy in her mouth :)
I tried this morning with some treats, but she only came to me when I threw the candy on the ground, guess thats a start! :)
mrsarun 2 years ago
@mrsarun have you tried a short throw game where she is on a really long lead, especially if you have a harness and not a collar that will choke her, then when she runs to with the disk you can gently reel her in if she darts away and exchange the disk for a treat or another disk. If she is food motivated something really yummy that requires her dropping the disk to eat it, followed by lots of praise and more fun. Be careful of jerking or choking though, don't throw the disk far. hope it helps.

That's what I was thinking, that cut looked weird on that dog. Not many dogs can rock a lion's cut, poodles can but that's about it.

Can you do a video on how to teach your dogs how to put their toys back in their basket? Mine scatter them all over the house! :(

@xawnuhx look up "Smart dog's can put their toys away" by pamelamarxen. She teaches with clicker training how to do this and it worked for me.
