I miss music like this in movies these days, I understand it can't always work, but it did here. The ENTIRE composition played start-to-finish without so much as a word or sound effect, and it was amazing and it was time well-spent to watch it.
Wow. Horns and trumpet rushing within the first 25 seconds was the first thing I noticed, and then the director drags the oboe (along with the rest of the orchestra) at 53 seconds. Maybe I'm just too familiar with the original as conducted by Jerry Goldsmith for the release of the soundtrack. It pales in comparison to the original. Thanks for posting, though. It's cool to hear it performed by a live orchestra.
"Welch ein Meisterwerk ist der Mensch! Wie edel durch Vernunft! Wie unbegrenzt an Fähigkeiten! In Gestalt und Bewegung wie bedeutend und wunderwürdig! Im Handeln wie ähnlich einem Engel! Im Begreifen wie ähnlich einem Gott! Die Zierde der Welt! Das Vorbild der Lebendigen!"

Who'se the idiot that edited this?? He starts by focusing on the strings as the horns start their theme, then as the violin kicks in, he cuts to the horns and stays on them.
I'm going to use this video clip at my next team meeting. Everyone here played a small role in what I heard a great masterpiece from Jerry Goldsmith...symbolic to true teamwork!
Very nice rendition, i thought a little quick, only by a tiny bit. But still a lovely lovely piece of music, well done to all. God, i miss Goldsmith's skill for spinning a tune!
Agree with SergioTheComposer - too fast (well, timing quite erratic, really). This theme, as Mr. Goldsmith points out on the Motion Picture "extras" DVD is a love theme.
Production was ongoing. They were still putting the music into the movie just days before release. Things were so tight that they were literally having to take the prints as they were made, boxing them and sending them out immediately. Robert Wise brought the print with him to the premiere himself from LA to the theater in Washington DC!
@SergioTheComposer It's not too fast. It's very close to the original, as even a quick glance at the running time shows. Relax and enjoy the wonderful performance of the perfect Goldsmith music!
Damn that is a good performance. 3:12 i always get goosebumps hearing that. So powerful, so moving..these folks did a remarkable job performing this. I thought i was listening to the soundtrack recording instead of them playing it at first it was was good. Wow. Wish there were more videos of these folks playing more Trek soundtracks.
This sounds very, very good; probably the best live performance I have ever heard of this particular melody/musical piece.
You can say many things about Star Trek, but all the films and tv-series has had some of the most beautifull themes of their times; especially when those themes were written by Jerry Goldsmith.
Not a flawless performance but still very well done. Just goes to show just how epic Goldsmith's Star Trek theme has become that's its still being performed 30 years on.
Very nicely done! I have to agree with Beamos12 that the tempo is rushed compared to the original recording however, musically, the orchestra is excellent. From the five minute mark onwards this version is quite excellent.
@DMaustrap This performance was a bit rushed. The official OST version of this cue is 5'59" . Other than that the overal sound of this cue is ESSENTIALLY the same as the OST version. I bet the performers just watched that part of the film over and over as 'practice' for this performance. That sequence and the 'final warp jump' scene from the movie are among the FINEST VFX shots *EVER* captured on film!

Good job but from about 1:18 to about 1:40 the tempo is just too fast, ruining a very important piece of the passage. Not enough rehearsal, methinks.

@tripsadelica
Agreed. Much of the original impact in that section is lost.

@blairlikesvoyager Ah yes... Friday December 7th, 1979... A date that will live in Infamy in My Mind...
I took my Older Brother's GF to see the first show of this movie because nobody else would go with me.
We Loved It. We hit it off together... Sci-Fi Nerds to the end.
She also let me do a few other.., ummm..., things too...
(which he doesn't know about... ;-) )
