theoretically, the intro contains chord voicing thats prominent within the jazz music. you just describing players who play the improvised melody as a solo, and ontop of that could well be that "jazzy intro"-like accompaniment.
That's not jazz my friend, that's was closer to funk. Jazz involves improvisation and would have something of the Bird, Coltrane, Brecker, Montgomery , Scofield or similar phrasing involved.
@Chromatype I agree that it's more funk than jazz, but jazz doesn't NEED to be improvised. Let's say you were doing a standard like Autumn Leaves and didn't improvise over it, you'd still be playing a jazz tune. That said, the people you mentioned are definately some of the best in the genre :)
I would rather have that than my PRS swamp ash special.
