Ok now, here's a hard one: I have a '97 nissan almera N14 and it has the following a/c (no climatronic) problem: I start up the a/c, it does its job, but after awhile (about 20min) it stops working and blows hot air (a little hotter then the one outside or the same temp). I have replaced the condenser (it was cracked), tested the system for leaks and charged up the system with refrigerant (all that was done by pro). After i turn it off for ~30mins,it starts blowing cold air. What's wrong with it?
@paky66 I forgot to mention: the doors are not vacuum actuated and the problem does not depend on engine rev speed. The engine fans start when i press the a/c on button; the engine runs at normal temperature.
the ac is the same for all cars my is plemont brisa 97 and works all time with out turne on, also like the compressor do not blow the air strong, is so slow. even i refill the little tank . any way my care is so older but i love it. because is so servicial. I feel so sorry for he because runs slow even i take with the mecanic and i changes all filters. and tara ra tara. my care runs slow. but is the only one and i insiste i love so much my care.
sir im just curious, which one of the two tubes is the high pressure side the slim on or the fat one and how and why do we need to lubricate the system ?
@tiniboy3173 the slim one is the high pressure as i remember right (the one after the compressor). The system needs to be lubricated because the compressor has pistons in it and its rings need to be lubricated.
i have question...my car is haveing lots of problems ...its a honda accord 94 ex with avtec enginge ...its old so i think every thing is old in it ...it never starts when i put in the key...now i know that could be lot of struff ...am doing all the work my self because ofmy spending bugget i had must of all ready pay out more then 2oo0.oo dallors is that to much...i would like to know where can i lrean more about fixing cars so i don,t get keep getting ripped off...thanks
@williams6975 that's sounds like no hot water going through you're heater core. Check ur valve that allows hot water to flow to ur heater core. I can't remember the name of it.
I have a 1989 lincoln town car and the heat don't blow out it just blows cold air. It use to work, can u please help me on some tips to do so my kids can drive in a warm car in the mornings when i take them to school thanks?
When i went to recharge my system after it was completely vacuumed out, I put open the H and L valves and put the Freon in both. I feel like that was a bad thing to do.. welll was it?? Cuz I Kinda thought after that I should have only put the freon in the Low valve only when charging it. Is this true?
hi i would like to know if i accidently puncture my consdenser. its tiny, u wont even be able to see it, would you be able to seal it up with an metal epoxy? or fix it or seal it at all? thank you in advance
@aiyista1988 Yes because AC uses up the engine's power, think of it like going up a hill where the engine needs to use more power to maintain it's speed.
pls advise me. what r the effects of engin change on the transmition? i changed my diesel 2400 engin with 2400 petrol engin but kept the transmission same .on my mitsubishi pajero 88 three door ..?
Eric, I have gauge checked my system and it is empty(gauge at zero). After checking for leaks I will vacuum pump the system for about 45 minutes before adding the refrigerant. At this point, how do I know if I need oil and if so, how do I go about adding it and how much and what kind for R-12. Also, is R-12 compatible with Johnsens Freeze-12? Can the two be mixed together without any current or future problems? Thank you, Curt
@Moralvorstellung7 The service manual has that information as it varies according to manufacturer, normally you only need oil after replacing a major component. You can't by R12 anymore and even if you could you would need a license to buy it.
Thanks a lot for this video. I studied mechanical engineering for 5 years and I got 3-5 courses but I can not explain it as simple as you simplified it in the sprayer example.
@5000Engineer I'm glad you like the video and my explanation, I consider myself a 'simple' person that needs a 'simple' explanation to understand things so making these videos seems to come easy to me. Thanks very much for your comment.
@SuperDriver101 It depends on the heat load an humidity, the rule of thumb is that it should cool about 25º-30º from ambient temp. I covered that in the AC performance test video.

Nice video! I see that for my honda accord, the heat works fine but stopped blowing cold air from the AC. This happened on the fly when the weather was very hot. Any clues where/how to diagnose the problem? Or do you recommend showing to a mechanic, which can be expensive though and not under warranty?
@foton24 AC problems are often more complicated than people think and require special tools to diagnose therefore I recommend taking it to a specialist to have it diagnosed and repaired.

@punce777 It could be the recirculate door is not closing properly and allowing outside air to enter the cabin, there could also be an air leak elsewhere but if you don't hear wind noise I would not think that to be likely.

hey i have a question, i took my truck to a shop they filled up the compressor w/freon but no cold air came out out of the vents, then took it a different shop did the same thing and still no cold air, one shop told me that it's the compressor, the compressor engages but i juts dont get cold air even a bit , can he be right ????
@Zpe3ddyGonzalexx AC problems are often more complicated than people expect, as there are many things that can cause poor AC performance besides low refrigerant, I can't offer an opinion without getting a look at it for myself unfortunately.
@Zpe3ddyGonzalexx In principal it is simple but there are many things that come into play during it's operation, any one of those things could cause the system not to work properly. It could be mechanical, pressure, electronic, or pressure related not to mention that some HVAC problems are inside the dash and it's controls. You also have to take into account the specialized equipment needed to service AC systems properly.
Today was extremely hot and my A/C vents started putting out a "smoky mist" that smelled slightly of burning rubber. After I checked and was assured no fire under my hood, & no increase of engine temp, I continued driving. Mist would 'come and go' for next 30 minutes. I decided to turn heat up to 80 degrees but it still sent out cool air. Thermostat problems? What's up. Need help. Thanks, info helpful in video.
@smartiegirl59 That is actually a normal condition during high humidity conditions so I would not be concerned, I suspect the smell was from outside the car and just got into the HVAC.
The same thing has been happening in my 2001 F150 (a smoky mist out of the vents) but mine has a slight smell of anti-freeze. I'm thinking my heater core must of popped a leak. I have no wet spots any where in the interior even after a two hour drive.
Hello Eric...Loed the video. That evap looks just like mine except the fittings.1994 honda del son si...I put new comp,,,drier and exp valve on...Vacuumed system down with no leaks.Recharged it and it will only drop to 58 degrees. My ford drops to 38 degrees out the vents. My honda did much better before comp went out.I also cleaned out all the lines, condenser and evaporator. What can be my problem? Thank you
@airmoth Without looking at the pressures I have no idea, in order for it to cool effectively it will need to have the proper pressures and if they are not correct the cause must be found and fixed, you would then recheck your vent temps.
@Usernamebreh Once you have evacuated the system of any left over refrigerant you quite simply remove the components, if you wish to remove the evaporator you will need to remove the dash and the HVAC assembly however.
hye..i hope u can help me..my car timing drops from 1000 to 300 when i turn on the aircond..and it will only gets cold if i drive the car..do you have any idea whats wrong with my car?
@am2r You may have 2 problems, one could be the cooling fans, make sure they work when the AC is on and the other could be a problem with the idle circuit on the engine. Good luck.
Hi I am new here. I have been working on my own vehicles for a few years but the ac system is something I have always refer to as an off limits area. I watched your vid and it makes sense for my wifes car but I drive a 94 gmc suburban that has rear ac and there is extra lines and components involved that I don't understand from the vid could you elaborate on what extra compents it has and why.
@sn8kecowboy84 It's really just another evaporator set up that is used to cool the rear of the vehicle, they share the same condenser however. The evaporators are like 2 separate units that can operate independently of each other.
I turn off my AC on 97 mercury villager ,and hose pops out like Bomb,Then I connect hose back and recharge it while AC was working it was fine ,then when I turn off the AC the hose pops out like crazy (Bang or loud sound),What is wrong? Can you help? Thanks ,,I am new here.
Eric, I just re-charged my van's A/C unit (I tried) with the auto store's R134A coolant-in-a-can. When I was finished, I heard a hissing from the back of my 1997 Town and country van. plus, my AC still doesn't work. What could be wrong?
@whoyadady Like with most AC problems you have a leak and you need to address that before you can fill the system again. In addition if it's been empty for a while you need to put a receiver dryer on it as well as vacuum down the system before charging.
@whoyadady I have no idea of the cost but the receiver dryer is a part not a procedure, the evacuation process is the procedure and is done to remove moisture from the system, the receiver dryer also helps control moisture in the system. Moisture in an AC system will ruin it, care must be taken not to introduce any moisture into the system for proper performance and longevity of the AC system.
@MARCOZR1 It's probably mildew on the evaporator. They make products to spray into the vents to help with this, they work for the most part but if you have a persistent problem you would need to remove the evaporator and clean it with soap and water as well as clean the inside of the HVAC system.
@EricTheCarGuy oooh and the actuator on my silverado is makin a thikin noise when i turn it on for like 10 secs... like trying to open and is allready open. i cant controll the direction of the AC... any ideas if to repair or replace??????
@MARCOZR1 Not a clue, in fact I honestly don't understand the question since AC can only flow in one direction. When you say 'actuator' are you referring to the AC compressor clutch? If so it could be a low charge or a problem with the clutch itself. I don't recommend AC work for the DIY as it involves more than most people think.
@derek032784 To be honest there are so many things that can go wrong with AC it's impossible to say really. I recommend you take it to a professional to have it looked at for a diagnosis.
Hey Eric could you possibly make a video on how to trouble shoot a A/C system? It would be a great help to me since i think my a/c compressor clutch is shot.... but then again i have no idea on how to tell. So please if ya get the chance can you make one?
@nsman06 I've actually shot some AC videos that I have never posted mostly because I don't feel the average person should be working on AC systems because of equipment issues, without the proper equipment your completely in the dark. I do hope to revise the video that I have shot to incorporate the proper methods of AC diagnosis at some point but I want to get my hands on that equipment myself so that I can show the procedure properly.
@greenlight2600 Not really no. Roll the windows down, if you have a 4 door roll the rear windows down and open the dash vents and it will draw air through without messing up your hair too much.
@greenlight2600 It is the blower fan just blowing air around without AC this is the way the system operates, it's either fresh air or air warmed by the heater core.
Hi, Eric. I'm slowly building a home auto shop. I would like to be able to evacuate an AC system and take a tank with old freon to a shop for safe disposal. I can afford a vacuum pump and I have a set of manifold gauges, but I can't afford a professional quality A/C evacuating system. Can I rig a vacuum pump to a freon bottle and then take the bottle to a shop for safe disposal? Or, do you get it evacuated professionally and then vacuum the system after rebuild? How do you do it in your shop?
@spelunkerd At the moment I don't have a recovery machine and as a result I take it to a friends shop for evacuation if I need to. I'm not sure what you would need besides what you described for recovery but I know that recovery machines also have filters in them as well. When working at the dealer we actually reused some of the R134 and I don't recall them ever emptying the tank. With this in mind you might consider the machine to save on the cost of refrigerant.
Hey Eric, it's Logan from Facebook. My windows still fog up even with the AC on. I think there's too much moisture in the system. How do you remove the moisture?
@lrossi888 I don't think it's moisture in the system as the components for heat and AC are sealed units inside of HVAC ducting, perhaps you have a leaking heater core causing you to fog up or your AC is not working properly. Check them both and see what you come up with.
@mrshabazz1 No videos on that yet sorry. If it runs I would say you did it right. I of all people know that there is more than one way to do something, I'm sure you did fine.
i bought a new truck 3 weeks ago and put in a stereo system. two days after that smoke started coming out from the vents of my truck. the smoke doesnt linger and doesnt have an odor. also when i turn on the defoger the windshields all get even more fogged up. whats going on?
@eltigre2169 Sounds like you might have a leaking heater core. See if your coolant is low and check to see if the passenger carpet is wet, if it is a leaking heater core is a good possibility. Since we are getting into the warmer months you might be able to bypass it by routing the inlet and outlet hoses together at the firewall until you can get it fixed.
I have a 96 Mustang GT. I replaced the heater core had to evacuate the a/c, disconnect the a/c lines, I connected everything up properly, a/c blew ice cubes before, i tryed charging it by putting in 3 cans of refergerant. What will I need to do to make it cold again? Thank you god bless.
First, am I to understand that your AC is not working at all, or is it just not performing well? The #1 problem with AC is leaks that cause refrigerant loss. You can buy a kit that has dye that you put into the system that will help you find leaks. Also, when you reassemble AC components it's a good idea to lubricate the 'o' rings with a little AC refrigerant oil to prevent damage to them.
intro, tooo funny...yah, I was feelin it vicariously,lol....sooo glad you did this...thank you!! I will be rewatching this over and over but I actually understood alot which is mind boggling. ~Raven
I'm glad you liked it, I hope this helped you. To do AC work accurately and responsibly, you really need one of them there 4 thousand dollar machines. I'm going to post a video on common AC problems in the not too distant future as well as a couple of AC "tip" videos.
Yep 5* Maybe hit on the cooling fans. I've had them not work or just one of two work so the car don't over heat but the A/C suxs. Overheating car don't help either.
This video really wasn't meant to cover much beyond basic AC operation,I wanted to keep it sort. I think I will make one or two in the future about some problems associated with AC to cover topics like fan operation. I love your comments Les, it's like your my editor. :D
This response may prompt me to do another video on AC performance testing, in fact I could probably do an entire series on AC stuff. In this case the "special tool" runs about $4000.

Thank you
airmoth 8 months ago
@airmoth Without looking at the pressures I have no idea, in order for it to cool effectively it will need to have the proper pressures and if they are not correct the cause must be found and fixed, you would then recheck your vent temps.

Hey,I was wonder if you can make a video on how to REMOVE the ac .I have a del sol and I want remove my ac to make more room. I never use it anyways.
Usernamebreh 8 months ago
@Usernamebreh Once you have evacuated the system of any left over refrigerant you quite simply remove the components, if you wish to remove the evaporator you will need to remove the dash and the HVAC assembly however.

hye..i hope u can help me..my car timing drops from 1000 to 300 when i turn on the aircond..and it will only gets cold if i drive the car..do you have any idea whats wrong with my car?
am2r 8 months ago
@am2r You may have 2 problems, one could be the cooling fans, make sure they work when the AC is on and the other could be a problem with the idle circuit on the engine. Good luck.

@EricTheCarGuy owh..thanks a lot bro =)

Hi I am new here. I have been working on my own vehicles for a few years but the ac system is something I have always refer to as an off limits area. I watched your vid and it makes sense for my wifes car but I drive a 94 gmc suburban that has rear ac and there is extra lines and components involved that I don't understand from the vid could you elaborate on what extra compents it has and why.
sn8kecowboy84 9 months ago
@sn8kecowboy84 It's really just another evaporator set up that is used to cool the rear of the vehicle, they share the same condenser however. The evaporators are like 2 separate units that can operate independently of each other.

Hi Eric
I turn off my AC on 97 mercury villager ,and hose pops out like Bomb,Then I connect hose back and recharge it while AC was working it was fine ,then when I turn off the AC the hose pops out like crazy (Bang or loud sound),What is wrong? Can you help? Thanks ,,I am new here.
shoja30 9 months ago
@shoja30 Sounds like a restriction in the system, I recommend taking it to a professional.

Eric, I just re-charged my van's A/C unit (I tried) with the auto store's R134A coolant-in-a-can. When I was finished, I heard a hissing from the back of my 1997 Town and country van. plus, my AC still doesn't work. What could be wrong?
whoyadady 9 months ago
@whoyadady Like with most AC problems you have a leak and you need to address that before you can fill the system again. In addition if it's been empty for a while you need to put a receiver dryer on it as well as vacuum down the system before charging.
EricTheCarGuy 9 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy-Thanks for the feedback. Is this receiver dryer procedure expensive? What do you think it will cost?
whoyadady 9 months ago
@whoyadady I have no idea of the cost but the receiver dryer is a part not a procedure, the evacuation process is the procedure and is done to remove moisture from the system, the receiver dryer also helps control moisture in the system. Moisture in an AC system will ruin it, care must be taken not to introduce any moisture into the system for proper performance and longevity of the AC system.

ey man everytime i turn my AC on it smells bad but then it goes away in like a minute... any ideas???
note:my truck is not equiped with a filter
MARCOZR1 11 months ago
@MARCOZR1 It's probably mildew on the evaporator. They make products to spray into the vents to help with this, they work for the most part but if you have a persistent problem you would need to remove the evaporator and clean it with soap and water as well as clean the inside of the HVAC system.

@EricTheCarGuy THANKS alot man ill check the autoparts store!!!

@EricTheCarGuy oooh and the actuator on my silverado is makin a thikin noise when i turn it on for like 10 secs... like trying to open and is allready open. i cant controll the direction of the AC... any ideas if to repair or replace??????
MARCOZR1 11 months ago
@MARCOZR1 Not a clue, in fact I honestly don't understand the question since AC can only flow in one direction. When you say 'actuator' are you referring to the AC compressor clutch? If so it could be a low charge or a problem with the clutch itself. I don't recommend AC work for the DIY as it involves more than most people think.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
yeah I will . . thanks buddy.
derek032784 11 months ago
is my compressor bad?
i know it sounds awful but still its working though its not that cold like new.
If i turn on the ac my car run slow.
and that embarrass me.
what do you think?
thanks. more power
derek032784 11 months ago
@derek032784 To be honest there are so many things that can go wrong with AC it's impossible to say really. I recommend you take it to a professional to have it looked at for a diagnosis.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
Hey Eric could you possibly make a video on how to trouble shoot a A/C system? It would be a great help to me since i think my a/c compressor clutch is shot.... but then again i have no idea on how to tell. So please if ya get the chance can you make one?
nsman06 1 year ago
@nsman06 I've actually shot some AC videos that I have never posted mostly because I don't feel the average person should be working on AC systems because of equipment issues, without the proper equipment your completely in the dark. I do hope to revise the video that I have shot to incorporate the proper methods of AC diagnosis at some point but I want to get my hands on that equipment myself so that I can show the procedure properly.

Is it possible for your car to get cold air even though your car don't have a/c, and if you can where is the cold air coming from?
greenlight2600 1 year ago
@greenlight2600 Not really no. Roll the windows down, if you have a 4 door roll the rear windows down and open the dash vents and it will draw air through without messing up your hair too much.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy well when I slide the switch over to cool side cool air blows outs, but now I think it is the blower fan just blowing air around
greenlight2600 1 year ago

How do you do it in your shop?
spelunkerd 1 year ago
@spelunkerd At the moment I don't have a recovery machine and as a result I take it to a friends shop for evacuation if I need to. I'm not sure what you would need besides what you described for recovery but I know that recovery machines also have filters in them as well. When working at the dealer we actually reused some of the R134 and I don't recall them ever emptying the tank. With this in mind you might consider the machine to save on the cost of refrigerant.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@spelunkerd I applaud your efforts to be responsible about recovery.

Hey Eric! Do you have any tips on how to check and or replace a blend door actuator on a 2007 Ford Taurus? Any help would be appreciated.
mtlh05 1 year ago
@mtlh05 Sorry I don't have a video on that. Things like that can be a pain and sometimes require the removal of the HVAC from the dash to do.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
Hey Eric, it's Logan from Facebook. My windows still fog up even with the AC on. I think there's too much moisture in the system. How do you remove the moisture?
lrossi888 1 year ago
@lrossi888 I don't think it's moisture in the system as the components for heat and AC are sealed units inside of HVAC ducting, perhaps you have a leaking heater core causing you to fog up or your AC is not working properly. Check them both and see what you come up with.

@EricTheCarGuy

i bought a new truck 3 weeks ago and put in a stereo system. two days after that smoke started coming out from the vents of my truck. the smoke doesnt linger and doesnt have an odor. also when i turn on the defoger the windshields all get even more fogged up. whats going on?
eltigre2169 1 year ago
@eltigre2169 Sounds like you might have a leaking heater core. See if your coolant is low and check to see if the passenger carpet is wet, if it is a leaking heater core is a good possibility. Since we are getting into the warmer months you might be able to bypass it by routing the inlet and outlet hoses together at the firewall until you can get it fixed.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
I have a 96 Mustang GT. I replaced the heater core had to evacuate the a/c, disconnect the a/c lines, I connected everything up properly, a/c blew ice cubes before, i tryed charging it by putting in 3 cans of refergerant. What will I need to do to make it cold again? Thank you god bless.
MrAdamSWebber 2 years ago
First, am I to understand that your AC is not working at all, or is it just not performing well? The #1 problem with AC is leaks that cause refrigerant loss. You can buy a kit that has dye that you put into the system that will help you find leaks. Also, when you reassemble AC components it's a good idea to lubricate the 'o' rings with a little AC refrigerant oil to prevent damage to them.

EricTheCarGuy 2 years ago
It was helpful. My Honda CRV (110K) air conditioning is at about 30-40% efficient/cold. My Saturn (125K) is still near 80% of it's coldest.
Glad to know that I should let a shop do this.
Damn those special tools. :D So many people make a mess of things when they think they "do not" need special tools.
