It's a gas crater yes, with an incredible unbelieveable huge big ass amount of gas down there. They had to set it on fire, or else it would cause a natural catastrophe. (disaster). It has burned like that for 35 years without any pause. And even if you filled it with sand, it wouldn't help, the gas would actually just come out, which means it has to burn like that, until it stops by itself ^^

You're a fucking idiot. The pressure from the gases would build up enormous pressure (assuming you could even keep the gas from escaping with sand). On another note if miles of materials can't stop it what exactly do you think 20 feet of sand would do? Okay, lets say that you did put out the natural gas fire AND kept the gas from escaping the crater, you don't think the gas would build up and either push the sand out of the way or push its way around?

it was not done too look pretty, tho it dose, :D they were mining for the gas and a spark want off and it started burning about 20 years ago ( so i herd dont troll if i am wrong just tell me! but i read one was like that!

You're close. They were mining, but then they found gas. In an effort to remove the gas, they lit a fire to try and get it all to burn up. This happened about 35 years ago, and the fire is still burning strong without any signs of letting up.
