  • This song always sounds rather clonky - but listen to the Jack Hylton version, complete with 33-piece orchestra, magnificent acoustic from the Friends' Meeting House and oh-so-cool vocal by Jack Jackson...

  • @tavriadriver Are you sure about this? My copy of Rust's jazz discography lists the band as being 16 pieces, the vocalist as Sam Browne and the location as Kingsway Hall, London. What is your source? Whoever is singing, I agree completely about his oh-so-coolness!

  • @Emidicta Jack Hylton and his Orchestra on 7th April 1929 - 16 members, with 35 instruments at their disposal... though admittedly I wouldn't hazard a guess as to how many are actually used in the recording. But the location's definitely Friends' Meeting House and the vocalist none other than Jack Jackson. HMV B-5638. p437 in my copy of Rust. And you can tell FMH by its lavish acoustic. Kingsway Hall was second best, followed by Small Queen's Hall.

  • @tavriadriver Yes, I'm sorry for my relying totally on the reference books - but that's a part of being a relatively new collector, I guess. Thanks for your input - I learned a lot!

  • @Emidicta My pleasure... I hope the British Dance Bands give you as much enjoyment as they have me!

  • @tavriadriver Decca had problems finding a suitable recording studio.1929 was their first year in business. This was recorded at Chenil Galleries Chelsea, which has long curtains everywhere. The curtains blocked any echo or vibration. Therefore the sound was muffled and ended too abruptly instead of ringing out, giving a very clonky sound. The band probably played it superbly, but the recording location made it sound rather poor
