  • Sooo Essex Uni!

  • Can anyone ride this or do u have to be members?

    Cool patanoster

  • To answer that question, I was able to just go in and ride it

  • Why is this video sped up?

  • lol, someone put a chair in there! 0:55

  • Great film. Its 24 years since I was jumping on and off that thing.

  • The music is from HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan. I'm surprised that no one else recognized it. In the original operetta, the admiral is singing about being a modern major general. Part of it is, "I am the very model of a modern major general." It is traditionally sung very fast, just as it is done here.

  • @Russ0000 Thank you! I KNEW I knew that from somewhere! It was driving me crazy.

  • Elements song is most appropriate! The split twist is a perfect effect for this as well. Sped up... the whole thing is just awesome! My fellow Americans would be so confused! I've ridden them, I took pause when 1st confronted w/ 1, but 1 ride and I was all sorted.

  • I was there in the late 70s: my memory is that if you stayed in to go over the top, just before you did, someone had written on the wall "you are going to die"...

Thanks Essex for three great years studying Biological Sciences.

  • God.... it really reminds me of my essex life. sweet!

  • What's the title of the song? i love it :)

  • Elements Song by Tom Leher :)

  • @cleverbadger *Lehrer

  • I recall at the bottom of the lift shaft was glass walled and you could be observed from the library cloakroom. Over the top was very dark.

  • I am at the University of Essex this year!! I love the elevator!!

  • Aw, I miss the lift in the library. Great video! I always took people that visited me on the lift. :)

  • Hehe, yeah me too. My tour was the towers, the lake, the lift, the union bar... then maybe the lift again.

  • Kinda cool how everyone in the video just takes it in stride. It probably helps that it's at a university.

  • Ah, the paternoster, definetely the best bit of the library at essex. Good times!

  • after consuming a certain fungus that grew across the road from wivenhoe pk, the pee-noster got even better

  • I hate that lift. I think I avoid the library because of it. Or maybe it's just because I don't do any reading... :D

  • Cool!

  • What a great video! Ahhhh, that was one of my favourite things about the University of Essex...happy days ; )

--Mary (BA English Language & Linguistics, 2002)

  • Can you stay on it and go around all day?

  • Yes, you can practically live on it.

  • I woz there 82-85 . Still scares crap out of me seeing them .

  • I saw a few people get stuck once when the safety cut-out was triggered!

  • im a new first year student at essex...seriously this lift scared the CRAP outta me....i took the stairs!!

    xxx

  • Try going under and over!

  • imagine it moved that fast haha

  • It did, that's real-time.

  • it clearly isn't! You can see it by the people! Cool video, though!

  • Hehe.

  • they replaced them with new ones?? what?

  • Why is there a chair in your paternoster?

  • We put the chair in after not having the guts to wedge a table in there.

  • Never seen such an elevator before.. looks to dangerous for me haha. What if you fall or get stuck, ouch!!

I'm happy the new elevators replaced these ones.. but they still look great..

Nice vid btw, with the music :)

  • Thanks!

Build in 1884 so I'm told. The straight up and down lift more commonly used today, with safety brakes, is dated 1853.

  • The speeding up was great, but Tom Lehrer lifts it to the top.
