Mantids are badass, but I would NOT back them up in a fight against most other large arthropod predators such as centipedes, predatory crickets and katydids, hornets, mygalomorphs, and scorpions at EQUAL size.

Mantids aren't built to fight but are rather ambush predators........not saying a mantis can't win a head-on face2face battle, but the chances this slim spiky hunter will win against any of the above is very small. Maybe a really small opponent though.

what exactly do you mean by twice the size? you mean a centipede two times the MASS? I doubt that quite a bit. A predator two times as heavy will be too powerful.......

I tried to feed a 2 inch mantis outside my house an injured grasshopper a little lighter than itself.......it couldn't even graze the hopper. The grasshopper was also too thick for the mantis to grab properly.

put that spider up against a 8" full grown adult female mantis and see what happens. that isnt a mantis that looks to me like a mantid. mantids get to be about 4 inches but are nowhere near as strong or smart as a praying mantis. a mantis will eat humming birds earth worms frogs lizards and just about anything 10" or less long

The mantis in this situation no matter the size wouldn't stand a chance. Mantids are quite fragile and are ambush predators, they lie in wait for their prey and rely on their strong forelegs to grasp the unlucky insect. Tables would be turned if spider was walking by a mantis waiting for food.

Mantis stood no chance, didn't matter the size unless it was much much bigger, I have yet to see a Praying Mantis kill anything near its size, they're not designed to fight, just hunt smaller prey. This wasn't a "vs" it was just a bigger than normal feeding.  Now an equal sized scorpion or centipede would have been a "vs".

@Tim4sX if u say mantis r not deisgned for a fight than i think you are very wrong. they can see 50 feet away and that they have hearing abilities that exceeds humans. Some mantises have a hollow body, and that it is useful in the detection predators. They use sharp spikes running down their leg to help grasp its prey, and there is also a hook at each end of the leg which helps when the mantis cuts their preys neck. i am doing a paper on them, and they take snakes and hummingbirds down

A little bit unfair size differences. A spider that size can easily overpower something lighter than it. Weight by weight, the praying mantis is the most efficient hunter/killer for its size. Large fore limbs for attack and tiny abdomen as a very difficult target for the opponent. Excellent build.
