This had been the NBC Symphony Orchestra, which was led by Toscanini from 1937 to 1954. When NBC discontinued the weekly broadcast concerts, and Toscanini retired, some of the musicians reorganized the orchestra and called it the Symphony of the Air. It was ironic that Sir Thomas Beecham should conduct this orchestra because it was known he didn't like Toscanini, although both were gifted and even inspired conductors. The immediate intensity of this performance is amazing!
