The clips of the first 2 movies were more funny than scary to me, and the last one "Tourist Trap" does remind me of House of Wax (the newer one anyway).
Tourist trap....i hate that movie. Would the burning be considered underrated, or sleepaway camp. Most people don't know much about them. Sad, both are superior to friday the 13th.
The most recent "House of Wax" movie (the one with Paris Hilton) was actually a remake of Tourist Trap, despite being named after the 1953 House of Wax movie (with Vincent Price. )
Tourist Trap would play on this off-the-wall cable station called "Showbiz" back around 1981 in the Dallas area. I was like 7 then and I saw that flick and it just freaked me the fuck out!
Alice Sweet Alice! I agree. The others I haven't heard of. If I were to do a list I'd include Burnt Offerings, The Nanny (Bettle Davis) and definitely The Screaming Woman with Oliva De Havaland (sp).
Wow, you're just naming off movies that I'm saving for October! LISA AND THE DEVIL is one I recently picked up for the best month of the year also. CARNIVAL OF SOULS is amazing and I just watched THE INNOCENTS, great stuff! Oh and I thought TOURIST TRAP was absolutely horrid, but that may just be me.
@Tralman1965 Thank you for your reply. No, it had a strange statue that you never really saw move but people kept dying around it. At the end it was dropped in the sea....I think. I was very young. It might have been a Night Gallery episode.
Great video. Ah, the memories of those weekend horror matinées. You did forget one of my favorite under-rated horror flicks of the '70s though. "Frogs" with Ray Milland. The music and tension were the foundations of that movie, scared the hell out of me when I saw it as a kid.
Thanks for posting these clips! :D Love the two b&w's the best. They knew how to frame for maximum fright back then, yet the 70's films are great too, they don't fall into that stupid fast paced edit and too loud music that plagues horror films today. I would consider this stuff faithful theatre and the stuff today Porn.
@jazzamind I did debate putting Carnival of Souls on this video. If I were to redo this list, I'd probably replace Carnival of Souls with The Haunting of Julia (which is creepy as well and more underrated than Carnival of Souls).
@jazzamind I think it's underrated because not a lot of people are wiling to actually psychologically invest in horror films anymore and people just don't like stuff like that now. (And I'm speaking of the younger generation)
Carnival of Souls is such a creepy movie. The way it gives off the feeling of total entrapment as she's all alone going through something she doesn't understand. The only romance you get is some perv whose into her but not enough to help her. The innocents is based off The Turn of the Screw right? Not too intimidating a comercial, but it looks so tempting. Also try watching The Locals. Not an oldie but good. Anything with Vincent Price.
@venusboys3 I cannot recommend the first two...I mean, they're okay, but. On the other hand "Don't Look Now" and "The Reflecting Skin" are both exceptional. It's all a matter of taste, you know. I mean, I think "Last House on the Left" is a comedy.
Is the person in the yellow coat with the mask in Alice Sweet Alice, is that her real face or is that a mask too? When she takes off the see through mask i mean.. Cuz its creepy as hell O.O It looks fake but i cant tell. It goes too fast.
Interesting insight you've given to these old horror films. They sure look chilly and good. For the Innocents, I'm sure that the book and the movie are good, but the trailer is so hokey.
@horcruxkiller Yeah, the trailer for The Innocents is hokey, making it seem like a William Castle movie or something. It's far from it though. I should've put a clip up instead to show just how creepy The Innocents is. I was being a bit lazy there.
the innocents is one of the most frightening pieces of literature i've ever read...the 1961 movie version, shown here, is as close to the novella as i have seen on film, but the themes are too controversial for it to ever be adequately represented on film.
The Innocents is one of the best horror flicks ever, and it's definitely underrated and overlooked. It's one of the only really effective ghost movies, up there with The Shining.
@rtstein07 Tourist Trap is awesome. One of the first dvds I purchased (for $5 at a flea market...and worth every penny!) Another great effort of building up suspense with little gore, but awesome atmosphere.
i watched your other vidoe on underrated horror movies. i haven't seen alot of them but would really like to. i have seen carnival of souls and loved it!
Ah... Now THIS list I can get behind! I haven't seen Lisa and the Devil yet, but I've freaking been dying to! It's in my Queue but Netflix has it on their damn Wait list. Carnival of Souls is in my Top 10 all-time favorites. I adore it more than I can say. An artistic achievement of epic proportions. Alice is a bit too WtF?! for me but it is a good movie. I don't go to CGI movies but I've seen scenes from them on YouTube. I agree that the whole effect is horrid. Unreal. Delivering no emotional impact. Do you foresee an anti-CGI backlash? I'm very interested in your response.
meh.. every new technique and style of making movies has been through its growing up phase. the critique, while valid,is a general one. the same things have been said when going from book to film (how could a film produce the same experience?),from silent to talkie(you wouldnt need to pay as much attention to set and style),and from black and white to color(the vivid color would cause the story to be second to the set) all im saying is it has to be given a chance to grow..
