Steve Gadd isn't just a rock drummer, he's also a jazz drummer....he's more of a jazz than a rock drummer. At any rate, anybody who says he isn't good should try and match his smoothness and his rhythm. If I had the opportunity to be any drummer, it might just be Steve Gadd. He can make a small drum kit sound gigantic with very little effort. Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, lmfao....you're comparing them to Steve Gadd? I'm sorry...they just don't even come marginally close.
and also Steely Dan, Bee Gees, Rickie Lee Jones, Leo Sayer, Van McCoy, Carly Simon, James Brown, Joe Cocker, Grover Washington Jr., etc...etc...etc...
@livejamm69 i did not get pissed off, but for ANYBODY to say that Gadd is "overated" is enough for me to get a good chuckle.
Gadd has transcendent all labels and categories, he has recorded/played with Eric Clapton/Frank Sinatra/Paul McCartney/Chick Corea/Luciano Pavarotti/Michael Jackson/Charles Mingus/Chet Baker/Paul Desmond/Stevie Wonder/Paul Simon, to name a few.
Afterall, this is what makes a great drummer, someone who can play the music. Chops are useless if you cant play the music.
In your "opinion" Gadd is overrated. This leads me to believe that you dont know what constitutes a good drummer (no offence) dont worry you will learn in time.
Do you think any of these drummers would or would of thought Gadd was overrated. I believe they have abit more "value" in what they say when it comes to playing the drums then you and i.
Ohh and feel free to let me know who you believe is not an overrated drummer.
"I can't think of another percussionist today who has inspired more drummers than Steve Gadd. His level of innovation, sheer technical mastery of the instrument, and dedication to the groove in every style of music he plays has delighted and instructed countless drummers in how good drumming can be. I'm grateful for every paradiddle, single and double stroke the man has ever played."
" I couldn't believe it from the first time I heard Steve. Not only does he do what he does with technical brilliance, but he basically put the word "music" right in the forefront of the drums. His influence on me was tremendous, as well as his influence on the entire drumming and musical world!"
"Steve is one of the greatest drummers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He caused me many a nights' headaches trying to figure out his rhythms, but I enjoyed doing it"
"I got my first Yamaha kit in 1978 because my hero, Steve Gadd, used them. I still play a black Recording Custom kit because of him."
Steve Smith;
"His pocket is the deepest, his time is flawless and his ideas innovative. In fact, I get asked all the time about a certain fill I played in the Journey tune "Separate Ways", my answer: it's a Gadd lick, and I stole it! thank you Steve for all the incredible music"
"The first thing I remember hearing Steve on was Chick Corea's 'Humpty Dumpty'. When I heard him play, I lost it. After that, I listened a lot to Steve's work with Chick."
Louie Bellson;
"Steve Gadd represents one of the most complete players in the world. He has it all, technique, groove, you name it. I've been a big fan of his for many years."
See, what did i tell you, 1 Steve Gadd fan pissed off. I know how much Gadd has accomplished over the last 40 years.....bla,bla,bla. I'm preety educated and i know my drummers. I'm just stating my opinion, but you had to get angry didn't you? I will always think Gadd is over rated, just like John Bonham, Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts are. Just because someone is famous it doesnt mean they have supernatural talent. If that was the case we would live in a perfect world!!!
Hey gotrottin, i agree with you. He's a great drummer, but there are better drummers. Gadd is over rated. He,s a yes man and he does exactly what producers want and thats why he's played on so many albums! Harvey Mason kills this guy. Don't beleive the hype.
Now watch as i get all these negative comments from all the Gadd fans! lol

Steve Gadd is likable, a good musician and very tight. But to be honest, I have heard many drummers growing up in the San Fernando Valley years ago, that were as good. Steve knows drum tuning, is very consistent and in the pocket, thus he's like money in the bank forf recording . I like him a lot, he just won't ever blow me away.
Gotrottin, you lost me at "I have heard many drummers that were as good".
Steve is one of the best drummers ever not because of the notes he plays, but the way he makes those notes sound incredibly musical, funky and ohh so tight. Lots of drummers can play his patterns, but none can make them sound as good. Nuff said.
Try reading my post one more time, you evidently missed something. I did nothing but compliment the guy, What, you're offended because I'm not blown by him? Get a Gadd damn life!

Hmmm, Erskine or Gadd? Which should I chose to listen to? "Well, Steve's paradiddles and syncopations are cleaner". "No, Peters grooves are more defined and his cymbal sounds are more articulate". I think it fit musically with what was happening. The beauty of Jazz music is that there aren't many rules when it comes to stylistic interpretation. It was a stylistic choice that in my opinion was tasteful. That tune grooves like a mother!
seriously man, you gotta chill with the flaming. you know, i speak for a lot of drummers when i say that i dont like like travis barker, but im not going to go and talk shit on all his videos, you have to respect the population of people who do like steve gadd in the same way that i, and many others, respect the population of people who like barker. find another way to vent; get a therapist or something because users like you are what ruin these videos for me.

My god you guys think he's got the patent on groove. All the greats have it in spades and then they ginsoo chop gadd into a billion slices w.stainless rotating blades and turn him into mulch. Then they steamroll him w/big solid basdrum work that you never hear gadd lay out and he's laying there one dimensional.
Omg, this poor rrdrums STILL thinks he's debating people. Dude, for the 15th time, people aren't debating you, they're LAUGHING at you.
Hello. Anybody there? knock...knock...knock...
This is about nothing else but a poor fool drawing attention to himself on an ANONYMOUS Internet forum. That's why it's so funny. Are you really that clueless? Stop, don't answer that.
I'm still waiting for you to tell everyone at those conspiracy places where you hang out that you're a secret agent too.
When I first started slamming on youtube I was venting on my perceptions of mediocrity. It's like going to an art museum and up on the walls are pictures of all the masters. Well A guy is going nuts on Picasso and I think Picasso sucks . I go the Huntington and see Blue Boy and fill w/rapture and some guy next to mee mumbles to his wife at the same picture"I don't see what the big deal is". That's just what this like. I'm going to dislike who I dislike. The difference is I'm going to vent.
Yeah in other words what right does an artist have to be immortalized if he has limitations?would it be so in sports?Like Gadd never have played a blazing solo that takes years to unravel and and bellson who is so inept and unpowerful to a guy like sonny payne and rich willaims jones morello and shoulsd I go on. And if you think i'm full of shit ask yourself if you would be happy w/bellson's style over some other . How many of you that think I blaspheme would actually want that boring crown?
What seems so obvious to me is so stupendous to you so I'll put it like this. Who would you rather play like? Gadd bellson or rich? hell who would they rather play like? It's really that simple to me. Rich slays them and they should be the first to admit it. Next imo drums were meant to be played at all volumes not just soft to middle. drums sound better played harder to my ears and i'm not the only one. when a technician of drumming doesn't have that explosive register he is ltd simple as that.
rich and gadd influenced eachothers musical development. they both said it. rich loved gadds style. wat i would like to know is, what would gadd and rich think of you?
Matt Smith told him he was a fraud on another Gadd film and he said he would show everybody if he had a video camera and some mics. How many times have you heard that one before? ;^)
rrdrums110 has painted himself into a corner he can't escape from. These posts are nothing but his silly personal ego at play and his obvious inability to take one tenth of what he dishes out.
Let's make it official and hey tell a friend i don't really give a fuck what you politically correct drummer types think. you don't hink or play out of the box and tough. Louie bellson was a very poor poor gutter level wanna be buddy rich type drummer w/very little fire although somewhat more than gadd and at least he could and would solo. But memorable? Not to me. krupa is better. The lightweight drumstick sound is not happening amongst other things. Play big like Buddy and tony elvin or stfu
What does political correctness have to do with you calling Louie Bellson a "very poor poor gutter level wanna be buddy rich type drummer w/very little fire?" That's just idiocy. "Play out of the box?" Do you play at all? "Play big like Buddy and Tony, Elvin or stfu?" Yes, I would like to hear you do that. When a fool comes to youtube commenting like you, it is necessary for you to put up or shut up. I would think you fear showing your skills very much.
rrdrums110 just hops from one Gadd video to the other hoping to incite. There's another Gadd video where he's now going after Louie Bellson. This character claims to be a Rich guy but has obviously not read the Rich bio where Rich is very complimentary of Gadd. rrdrums110 is just another guy who nobody pays attention to in real life trying to reinvent himself on youtube.
Hal blaine and john robinson have recorded more than steve gadd I guess by your lame criteria they are better drummers? Steve gadd is overated and always plays the same licks in his never blaze but "groove solos" give me buddy rich any day billy cobham joe morello anybody that really smoke a snare drum w/blister and technique. Gadd ain't that guy.
you are right to an extent.while gadd is not the greatest ever,he is th reason all the drummers play the way they play.you cant find a drummer that hasn't borrowed from gadd
rrdrums110: stop your gadd bashing now here on youtube! understand that you are not welcome with your comments , they show, that you're not knowing what you're are talking about. go, don't waste your time with bashing, go and rehearse and show us here on youtube how to play the right drums:-) poor guy!
rrdrums110, even Buddy Rich really liked Gadd's drumming, so I really can't understand why you allow yourself to bash him constantly... one reason does come to mind: you must be a jerk!
Hey Gitchigoomi, do me a favour, dont comment on things you know nothing about.
Saying that Gadd is overated / and not as good as he is hyped up to be just leads me to believe that you have no idea what this man has recorded in the past 40 years.
You bring up a couple of his songs that you saw on you tube and then what? base your judgement on that.
I dont understand how anyone can call a man who is one of the most recorded artists of all time overated.
Here is a short list of some of the artist of various musical genres that Gadd has played with...
Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Luciano pavarotti, Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Paul Simon, Paul Mccartney, Ringo Starr, Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, Charles Mingus, Weater Report, Chick Corea, Steely Dan, Barbara Streisand, the Bee Gees, Peter Gabriel, Al DiMeola, Jaco Pastorious, Mongo Santamaria, Joe Cocker and the list goes on and on.
First of all, Gadd was a child prodigy even making an appearance in the original Mickey Mouse Club. At the age of 11 he was sitting in with the great Dizzy Gillespie (do you know who he is?)
Not only is he one of the most recorded, but i have yet to find a drummer who has crossed so many musical genres.
Shit, what other drummer has recorded with such a diversity of musicians.
Is Gadd the best drummer ever? Who can say? Is there a best drummer ever? There are so many. He may certainly be one of the most musical. His concept of phrasing and feel are as expressive and lyrical as any harmonic instrument.
Let me be the first to say it: I think Steve Gadd is one of the most overrated drummers ever. Yeah, yeah, I know, "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," 2-sticks-in-each-hand Mozambique on "Late in the Evening" etc., but I still think he's overrated.
You say that because you want to think you do, like people who defend Terry Bozzio or modern art, both of which suck most of the time. I read music fluently and have been playing drums for 15 years. This doesn't make my opinion more valuable than yours or anyone else's and I'm certainly not as good as he is. But he's certainly not as good as his hype either. Peace.
I don't care who you are, how long you have played drums/studied music or how good you are.
Steve Gadd has no hype. He has been one of the most popular drummers since the 70's in all styles of music.
The reason he is still in demand for the biggest artist is becasue of the fact that he has a groove and a phrasing that only a very few drummer on earth can match. You mention a few Paul Simon tunes, but what you obviously don't know is that SG has played hundreds of records and still record.
And even though Steve Gadd repeats alot of his ideas in solos it cannot be denied that he is an innovator. Listen to Steely Dan's Aja (1st take by the way) which still today is one of the most unique drumtracks in popular music. Or take a listen to Chick Corea's Three Quartets and hear how Steve Gadd introduces a completely new sound to jazz. And not only jazz, Steve Gadd invented the dry cymbal and drum sound which still today is one of the most copied sounds for drums.
Even Tommy Igoe, one of the up-and-coming top drummmers (check out the birdland bigband) said it, how Steve Gadd is the only person on the drumming scene today who can kill him entirely by playing time, nothing else.
And don't tell me it's a subjective matter. I agree music is a very personal and subjective matter, but nobody how many times you say it, nobody can be right saying steve gadd is overrated or doesnt groove. Because he has set the bars for what groove is and its diversity.
"and yes it does piss me off when people diss Steve Gadd" That's pretty obvious. Why? Calm down. People are entitled to their opinions ESPECIALLY in the arts. Make your point, but don't have cow.
Well, he's contributed to the rock genre a lot recently. For us older katz, we know he's influence on jazz, fusion, funk...etc. He'll always be a jazz guy to me.
The great thing about Mr.Gadd is you don't have to be a musicians to appreciate his playing!! That says a lot about Mr.Gadd!! He is admired by all walks of life!! This performance is proof!!
It's just doubles with the left and accenting with the right( playing 16ths but every left hand stroke is a double). I know it LOOKS like a one-handed roll, but it isn't.
why can't my drums do that

Yeah in other words what right does an artist have to be immortalized if he has limitations?would it be so in sports?Like Gadd never have played a blazing solo that takes years to unravel and and bellson who is so inept and unpowerful to a guy like sonny payne and rich willaims jones morello and shoulsd I go on. And if you think i'm full of shit ask yourself if you would be happy w/bellson's style over some other . How many of you that think I blaspheme would actually want that boring crown?
rrdrums110 2 years ago
What seems so obvious to me is so stupendous to you so I'll put it like this. Who would you rather play like? Gadd bellson or rich? hell who would they rather play like? It's really that simple to me. Rich slays them and they should be the first to admit it. Next imo drums were meant to be played at all volumes not just soft to middle. drums sound better played harder to my ears and i'm not the only one. when a technician of drumming doesn't have that explosive register he is ltd simple as that.
rrdrums110 2 years ago
rich and gadd influenced eachothers musical development. they both said it. rich loved gadds style. wat i would like to know is, what would gadd and rich think of you?
NYJOS 2 years ago

Play big like Buddy and tony elvin or stfu
rrdrums110 2 years ago
do you actually play drums or are you just talking shit like a panzee. you got problems bro. seek immediate medical help
swisstripz 2 years ago 3
What does political correctness have to do with you calling Louie Bellson a "very poor poor gutter level wanna be buddy rich type drummer w/very little fire?" That's just idiocy. "Play out of the box?" Do you play at all? "Play big like Buddy and Tony, Elvin or stfu?" Yes, I would like to hear you do that. When a fool comes to youtube commenting like you, it is necessary for you to put up or shut up. I would think you fear showing your skills very much.
newport567 2 years ago
How do you know that? did he tell you ? Whatever.
rrdrums110 2 years ago
rrdrums110 just hops from one Gadd video to the other hoping to incite. There's another Gadd video where he's now going after Louie Bellson. This character claims to be a Rich guy but has obviously not read the Rich bio where Rich is very complimentary of Gadd. rrdrums110 is just another guy who nobody pays attention to in real life trying to reinvent himself on youtube.
princeshadar5 2 years ago 3
Hal blaine and john robinson have recorded more than steve gadd I guess by your lame criteria they are better drummers? Steve gadd is overated and always plays the same licks in his never blaze but "groove solos" give me buddy rich any day billy cobham joe morello anybody that really smoke a snare drum w/blister and technique. Gadd ain't that guy.
rrdrums110 2 years ago
you are right to an extent.while gadd is not the greatest ever,he is th reason all the drummers play the way they play.you cant find a drummer that hasn't borrowed from gadd

rrdrums110: stop your gadd bashing now here on youtube! understand that you are not welcome with your comments , they show, that you're not knowing what you're are talking about. go, don't waste your time with bashing, go and rehearse and show us here on youtube how to play the right drums:-) poor guy!
tomgadd 2 years ago 3
rrdrums110, even Buddy Rich really liked Gadd's drumming, so I really can't understand why you allow yourself to bash him constantly... one reason does come to mind: you must be a jerk!

I dont understand how anyone can call a man who is one of the most recorded artists of all time overated.
vicegripsmirnoff 2 years ago 4
Go to Gadd's website you will see quotes written about Gadd from some of the great musicians that know the difference between hype and the real deal.
Gadd has said it many times that he dosent play the drums, he plays the music. To me that sums up the reason for his success.
He has earned his spot as one of the greatest musicians (there is no overated, there is no hype)
Remember everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.
vicegripsmirnoff 2 years ago 2
Here is a short list of some of the artist of various musical genres that Gadd has played with...
Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Luciano pavarotti, Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Paul Simon, Paul Mccartney, Ringo Starr, Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, Charles Mingus, Weater Report, Chick Corea, Steely Dan, Barbara Streisand, the Bee Gees, Peter Gabriel, Al DiMeola, Jaco Pastorious, Mongo Santamaria, Joe Cocker and the list goes on and on.
vicegripsmirnoff 2 years ago
First of all, Gadd was a child prodigy even making an appearance in the original Mickey Mouse Club. At the age of 11 he was sitting in with the great Dizzy Gillespie (do you know who he is?)
Not only is he one of the most recorded, but i have yet to find a drummer who has crossed so many musical genres.
Shit, what other drummer has recorded with such a diversity of musicians.
vicegripsmirnoff 2 years ago
Is Gadd the best drummer ever? Who can say? Is there a best drummer ever? There are so many. He may certainly be one of the most musical. His concept of phrasing and feel are as expressive and lyrical as any harmonic instrument.

This feeling, you cant learn this, you need to have it, but that's my opinion

Let me be the first to say it: I think Steve Gadd is one of the most overrated drummers ever. Yeah, yeah, I know, "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," 2-sticks-in-each-hand Mozambique on "Late in the Evening" etc., but I still think he's overrated.
gitchigoomi 3 years ago
you say that because you don't understand it
MMMuller 3 years ago
You say that because you want to think you do, like people who defend Terry Bozzio or modern art, both of which suck most of the time. I read music fluently and have been playing drums for 15 years. This doesn't make my opinion more valuable than yours or anyone else's and I'm certainly not as good as he is. But he's certainly not as good as his hype either. Peace.
gitchigoomi 3 years ago
I don't care who you are, how long you have played drums/studied music or how good you are.
Steve Gadd has no hype. He has been one of the most popular drummers since the 70's in all styles of music.
The reason he is still in demand for the biggest artist is becasue of the fact that he has a groove and a phrasing that only a very few drummer on earth can match. You mention a few Paul Simon tunes, but what you obviously don't know is that SG has played hundreds of records and still record.
MMMuller 3 years ago 2
And even though Steve Gadd repeats alot of his ideas in solos it cannot be denied that he is an innovator. Listen to Steely Dan's Aja (1st take by the way) which still today is one of the most unique drumtracks in popular music. Or take a listen to Chick Corea's Three Quartets and hear how Steve Gadd introduces a completely new sound to jazz. And not only jazz, Steve Gadd invented the dry cymbal and drum sound which still today is one of the most copied sounds for drums.
MMMuller 3 years ago
Even Tommy Igoe, one of the up-and-coming top drummmers (check out the birdland bigband) said it, how Steve Gadd is the only person on the drumming scene today who can kill him entirely by playing time, nothing else.
And don't tell me it's a subjective matter. I agree music is a very personal and subjective matter, but nobody how many times you say it, nobody can be right saying steve gadd is overrated or doesnt groove. Because he has set the bars for what groove is and its diversity.
MMMuller 3 years ago
I know Tommy and I know how highly he regards Gadd.
"nobody can be right saying steve gadd is overrated or doesnt groove" I didn't say the second and I stand by the first.
gitchigoomi 3 years ago
and yes it does piss me off when people diss Steve Gadd
MMMuller 3 years ago
"and yes it does piss me off when people diss Steve Gadd" That's pretty obvious. Why? Calm down. People are entitled to their opinions ESPECIALLY in the arts. Make your point, but don't have cow.
gitchigoomi 3 years ago
not to mention how he invented linear drumming.. the list goes on -you could write a damn book about how good steve gadd is
MMMuller 3 years ago
Well, he's contributed to the rock genre a lot recently. For us older katz, we know he's influence on jazz, fusion, funk...etc. He'll always be a jazz guy to me.

He's most likely referring to the common man recognizing Steve Gadd from his work with Paul Simon, and a pretty extensive list of studio work.

The great thing about Mr.Gadd is you don't have to be a musicians to appreciate his playing!! That says a lot about Mr.Gadd!! He is admired by all walks of life!! This performance is proof!!

at 49 seconds, watch his left hand. Gadd is doing a perfect one handed drum roll. If you can download the video, slow it down. It's f... great!
muratkli 4 years ago
It's just doubles with the left and accenting with the right( playing 16ths but every left hand stroke is a double). I know it LOOKS like a one-handed roll, but it isn't.
