What an American pays for health insurance plus deductibles plus copays, a Canadian has in his pocket, because our taxes include all that. Canadian taxes are only higher than what an American pays if that American has no health costs and thus, no health care.
Check out 1puglife: He lost his finger in an accident in Ontario. He went to the hospital who told him "sorry, you need to go to another hospital for surgery, and you provide your own transportation, there's no ambulance".
@divisioneight I feel pretty sure that is is false. My uncle had his hand severed in a work accident and within 30 minutes he was having his hand reattached by one of the best microsurgeons east of Toronto. If it can happen in Halifax, it would happen in Ontario.
@murphyj87: I don't doubt your information. I also have heard some nice things from Canadians about their health care system. Perhaps the dude I was referring to had another type of or level of health care. Who knows. I understand taxes are high to help pay for this program which may limit it down the road. That seems to be the model of things down here in the States where the best of intentions launch a good program which mismanagement then leads to ruin.
@divisioneight That proves that you know nothing about Canadian health care. There are no different levels of care. The poorest Canadian has the same health care as the Premier of his province and his Member of Parlliament. Comparing Canadian taxes and American taxes is comparing apples and oranges. Canadian taxes include health costs. American taxes cover NO health costs. Canadian taxes are 35% of what American taxes+health insurance+deductibles+copays are.
@divisioneight That's why I made this video: you can always find one crazy random case to prove your beliefs. if I find you one heartbreaking story SOMEWHERE about a strawberry addiction; would you outlaw them? I got tired of other Can. hcare videos interviewing a maximum of three people that they researched and sought out, and wanted the general experience of a few hundred random people on the street (positive). 'Cuz in the US the random street interviews reveal MANY horror stories.
American health care is the way it is because fat cats want to make money, plain and simple. This is a very good representation of how Canadians feel about our health care, and hopefully sets a few Americans straight.
The saddest thing in the U.S. is it's so big it becomes isolated like China in the 18th century that it thinks it's the best and the center of the universe. By the time China found out, it's already several hundred years behind the rest of the world. U.S. is falling into the same trap. We can't even learn from our Canadian neighbor. Greed has taken over the country. Representatives don't represent the people. John Cornyn never asked for my opinion. He shut the door and said he represented me.
Thank you Burnodo! Feel free to help spread it by posting on Facebook or e-mailing or... especially if you happen to know folks who are "afraid of becoming like Canada"! :)
To continue - all healthcare systems are suffering but it is an effect of organizational mismanagement at many levels, in my view, as opposed to Canada continuing to go down the 'private' path. Universal healthcare is and has been workable because it is what Canadian care most about including access to care for all regardless of money, race, religion or all of the other biases. However, unless we solve the system issues healthcare everywhere will continue to deteroriate and many suffer.
The governments do have a deciding role in healthcare because they do dicate what services are paid for and available via their provincial plans. There is input from professional organizations. There is the federal health authority and then the provincial authorities. Two issues of importance. Where you live in Canada decides what access you have to services and they differ between provinces. Secondly, citizens have been led down the garden path in fear mongering and the rush to privitization.
I cant imagine having a health financing system based on profit and not helping patients :(
Universal healthcare works fine in Denmark.

Now this video is much more representative of the Canadians that I know and live around.
I can't name one person, not one, that would prefer an American style health care system to what we have now.
Most laugh if you even ask the question.
If you're an American who gets, say, cancer. Would you rather:
a) know that your health care is taken care of so you can concentrate on getting well
or
b) have the added financial stress of paying potential 100's of 1000's, bankrupting yourself in the process

sorry snark, each province is run individually, so I don't think you know what you are talking about.

Good job on the video. I've been asking my Canadian friends & hearing the same. They don't understand why American Health Care is the way it is.
