let down by awful carburetter,battery boxes rotting through,ridiculous engine oil dipstick connected to a wire that constantly broke........... i preferred the earlier mark 2,many of theese delivered 90,000 miles with no problem atall
It was a good car for its time, but the design lingered on too long and by 1990 it was very much outclassed. However, for the time, the Mark 3 Escort was a good car and light years ahead of the sad, old Austin Allegro.
I think Vauxhall just pipped ford to the post with the Mk1 Astra...but both cars were very impressive for the time. I remember being totally blown away by how well a 1.3 CVH would go in 1981
@Annihilator1111 Te falta Argentina amigo ; ) Por aqui diez años mas tarde se vendia como auto nuevo xD You forgot Argentina my friend ; ) aqui diez años mas tarde se vendia como auto nuevo xD
A drag co-efficient of 0.385 was good for the time. The mk3 Cavalier has a drag co-efficient of 0.29 which is a tremendous achievement and cost Vauxhall millions to achieve, but that was nearly ten years later. Does anyone know what it was for the mk1 Astra? The mk1 Astra and mk3 Escort are vary similar cars indeed. I like the Astra more, although I think both are great cars.
yeah seee simple is efficient thats why i drive a 92 sierra azura and have a 79 cortina not like todays crap too many eletrics and takes me 20 mins to do a timing belt and if it snaps no probs put another one on and away to go ...
nice :) dont forget the first car to have all round independent suspenion. nowadays nearly all cars have it :p Colour coded mirrors & bumpers etc & spoliers and skirts and what else was the escort an innovator of ? hmm Alloy wheels, Bonnet Vents, multi injection system i'm sure there's many more too the list goes on and so does my Ford Escort, just got back from Belgium & Holland in it. we went all around europe last year in it & down to Malaga in Spain. loads more years left in it yet. :)
it apears the greenhouse is the same as the american version? Did they just change the front and rear clip treatments for different markets? This version looks way better than the homely one we recieved.

Ha I love how after he mentions the handling, it shows the car understeering badly around the last bend!

I love these older cars. So easy to work on, not like the new shite getting made now, where yo need a degree in electronics just to open the bonnet

@1100HondaCB Astra Mk1 was a drag factor of 0.39, Vauxhall Nova 0.35, Mk2 Astra/Belmont 0.30-0.32.
vpole 10 months ago
@vpole The mk2 Astra must have looked so ahead of its time when it was launched in '84/'85.

The MK3 Escort had a drag co efficient of just 0.385,the XR3 was just 0.375.The only car in it's class that was more aerodynamic was the citroen GSA.
