Another song writer would have tried to make two, three, or four songs out of this. As a man, Mr. Adams often shows little restraint, but as a songwriter he has a real sense of balance.
Was this the gig where he was drunk and wouldnt stop rambling on and on,starting then stopping songs ,took a break after a 40 or 50 min ,the crowd shouting requests for ages because he sat fiddling with his guitar doing nothing.
i flew over from Belfast to see him and i was totally pissed off.when he bothered to actually sing a whole song,i remembered why i wanted see him in the first place.
Saying that ,when he played here in sep/oct later that year ,(with the Cardinals) ,it was a great gig.
Be it acoustic or rock n roll - this song rocks - and at this moment (which is fucking totally insignifcant in the grand scheme of our universe) is for my forever friend, and fucking bad influence, Ms Jane. Love you JC Xx
"I hold you close in the back of my mind/ It feels so good, but damn it makes me hurt."
When you can write lyrics like that - something so simple, but that probably everyone out there can relate to - you sure don't need any embellishment or vocal pyrotechnics.
Ok, so I am baffled as to why he says 'La Cienega'; which means 'swamp'. Anyone know the story on this song/title? Either way, this is one hell of a song!
Thank you for sharing this! It is wonderful.

I also have a question. Why 'little girl'?
PorteousR 8 months ago
@PorteousR the use of 'little girl' is most likely a metaphor for the opinion he has of the actions/words of the woman in the song.

Why kind of guitar is he playing?

@brainmed I could not have said it better..... i believe that his unbalanced personal life is a function of his brilliant creativity...

try to get a copy the bootleg album "suicide handbook". it has this version (or a similar one), and many other priceless gems.

The version on Suicide handbook is a different version. It sounds a little different than the version on Gold.

I fucking LOVE this guy! There is not a song/performance of his that I don't like. Such a great talent... thanks for posting this.
bigdlaz 3 years ago
This and "Oh My God, Whatever, etc." are by far my favorites of his. This version is sick. I didn't think you could improve La Cienega, but he did.
thesevisions 3 years ago
Better, spookier, more intimate than the CD version. Me like. Yes, La Cienega is a major road here in LA.

I think here it means the street in West Hollywood, La Cienega Boulevard.
jainonen 3 years ago 8
There is also a La Cienega in New Mexico but I believe the Hollywood answer is right
