I freakin' love this song. I've been playing bass in my guitar teacher's blues band for about a year and half now, and we've been wanting to move the band's style more towards jazz fusion. and performing this song seems like a good start.
Of course, learning to play this kind of music is one thing, Having the skills to write it is something else entirely.
THIS IS THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!! OF THE DECADE...Thanks for posting this video! You ROCK!!!!!!!!! I love both Artist, and you have supreme taste in MUSIC!!!!!!!!11111
Can the build an APP for this? George can put a smile on anyones face well except Alphonso Johnson see the Red Baron video, must come from his days with Zappa. I've played with some young cats that are into jazz rock fusion and play it well, so there may be music made like this again somewhere down the road.
You could say that. Jeff Beck is really good but I think Stanley is better overall. Jeff Beck has written some good music, but his compositions are definitely better than his soloing. Zappa, for one, and even Al Di Meola, among others, seem to be much better composers. Zappa solos have the most soul and emotion I've heard, his musical expression was pretty masterful overall, but Stanley is right there with him in terms of soloing, and a very good composer too.
@trukman1991 Because Justin Bieber,Rebecca Black,Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas somehow manage to get inside this page because they were jealous that 558 individuals didn't view their shitty video's!!!
I remember Stanley playing mostly Alembic Basses back in the day. He had a custom made piccalo bass, and a double neck and an electric double bass. You got to listen to Vulcan Princess by Stanley Clarke too. He composed alot of music for movies and tv.
@ForseT I'm certain that's a Davis Clavitar (a keyboard controller that predates the MIDI standard) hooked up to whichever monophonic synth George Duke was using at the time. Herbie Hancock also most famously used it.
What is the brass cover in between the pickups? Preamp? The one I had didn't have this feature. It didn't have the brass sustain block under the bridge either. Still sounded squanky though. I think that's the best looking bass Stanley has ever played. The short scale ones look ridiculous. One thing about Alembic..I've never seen one that didn't have a perfectly straight neck..even the early examples.
What happened to the rest of it? It was going so well, so smoothly, then just abruptly ended? Is something wrong with my feed, or did the song reach a limit....
Stanley played Birmingham (UK) Town Hall in the late Seventies. He took a break while the pianist played an extended solo. Stanley was leaning against his double bass, clearly enjoying the pianist's groove when the bass slipped from his grip and crashed to the stage, breaking the neck. "Don't worry." He said "I've got half a dozen of these at home." S.C.,The God of Bass
I remember watching the original broadcast of this on the BBC all those years ago! I didnt know you could play bass like that. It was one of those Hendrix-style moments where you think 'bloody hell! so THATS how you play'. I sat there just stunned for the entire performance. Great stuff ! : )
Why would you even compare two diffrerent bass players that are geniuses in their own special way. I dont understand. So tired of this Musician X > Musician Y bullshit that seems to be so popular nowadays.
Back in the 70's while all my frat brothers were chugging beer, dancing to the BeeGees, and acting like they loved one another, I was up in the attic/bedroom with MY faction of the fraternity and our girls..smoking really good cigarettes and grooving to the Modern Man himself -
Mr. Stanley Clarke...we scored more than the boys in the basement, I guarantee.
@dhampex yeah!! you can tell it's a polyphonic synth when he plays that percussive-sounding lead, there's definitely poly envelope triggering happening. That would explain the quick preset switching too. Good call!
@mootbooxle man herbie did this to with the prophet but he also controlled his 8voice oberheim sem, but i miss the george duke custom minimoog keytar in plexi he did on the reach for it album and concert. He even had that thing light up!!!!
The last 2 minutes of this version of School Days is incredible. Too bad it had to end, they were just starting to cook. Stanley will always be the best bass player EVER ! Both guitar & Bass Cello.
