Actually, it's more like another part of CoD. When you shoot a soldier trying to drop a grenade (Since at least CoD2), they drop the live grenade.

You hardly use it in the game besides tossing grenades. For the log you just need to hold the controller straight and tilt opposite of the direction Nate starts to bend. Not side to side like the animation shows.

Choose the grenade then press the aim button. You'll see a grid line showing where the toss will go. From here just tilt the controller forward or backward to aim distance and press the attack to toss it.
