  • Loves Jay's open minded taste in cars.

  • Piece of shit...

  • I am going off of the us model which was rated by the EPA to be about 37 mpg. The chevy cruze Eco was rated roughly the same but higher mpg on the highway. Ford fiesta is just 1-2 mpg lower than the smart car. Those are the numbers I was going off of. I don't doubt though that yours gets that high of milage though.

  • What happens when the semi behind you can't stop? Some sedans can get better gas milage and I would think those are safer. I personally drive a truck. Heck of a lot safer.

  • @boarderofsnow13

I live in the Uk and own the Cdi diesel model.

Remember a British gallon is slightly larger than a Us gallon at 4.5Litres and my car has returned a genuine 91MPG.

What other sedan here or in the States can do that sort of gas mileage?

  • @boarderofsnow13 You would be surprised to know that the Top 10 list for most dangerous vehicles in a collision is heavily populated by pickup trucks and SUVs. The smart fortwo is not on the list.

  • I like the fiesta better. It gets almost the same mileage, seats 4, and it supports american jobs. It take a real man to drive a fun little car thank you Jay

  • They say its easy to dodge an accident. NO its slow, it stops badly, its steering is crap, and it shifts like a new teenager.

  • @Enchurito I have never driven a Dodge that stops well or has good handling. I do by American but not Dodge.

  • @curtis52285 I never said dodges have good handling.

  • if you want an economic car that gets 40 mpgs get a fiesta. they're the same price too

  • if you dont want a smart.... buy anything else with an engine under 1.6 petrol or 2.0 diesel with a curb weight of under 1300 kg.

then learn to drive... i mean.... Really drive.

  • well it does have race seats, i give it that. and the panels come off for weight reduction. what more do you want??

  • well it does have race seats, i give it that.

  • I like to call it the Not-Very-Smart car.

  • I don't care what Leno says, This car is just not going to happen with me atleast. Way too much much for so little.

  • I paid $12,500 for my yaris. It has the 1.5 liter engine from the prius and gets 38 city/42 highway with an automatic transmission. Its still pretty quick and it's twice as big. I moved a twin size mattress/box spring with the hatch slightly opened.

  • $16,590 for that car? you can get a base corolla for that price.

  • A base smart car he said was 11.5k dollars.

  • he's always wearing the same clothes lol

  • he spend all his clothing money on cars

  • haha XD

  • who buys clothes when you can buy 12,000 dollars worth of car air freshiner?

  • Just 2 weeks until I got to the dealer and pick up an Orphan!!!

  • im picking mine up on monday! White exterior with black body accents, black leather, and the full package with tacomiter and clock. i cant wait!

  • Get the chrome package and fog light rings. They look really nice in the sun.

  • I need to have one soon!

  • crappy audio 1 star

  • It's a three cylinder Jay.

  • safer than a bike

  • i wonder if its hard to get financed on one of these since they are owned by mercedes. prob. gotta have a#1 credit, unless u gonna buy it cash.

  • Well Smart is actually it's own company, Mercedes just owns it. Like Toyota owns Scion, Toyota is hard to get credit for but Scion isn't.

  • thanx fo the info. im thinking bout making it my next car.

  • thats his garage. impressive isn't it!?

  • He said it's his favorite car....

  • I use one regularly. It's just great. Every journey goes quicker 'cos, like a bike, I park it where I like and scoot about with impunity. Also, because it had to be to sell, it's also a very safe car.

It's now very common in European towns but the average American will take a few more years to do the math. Gaaaad..its different! Wow. It must be crazy.

  • What a joke of an infomercial!!! How can they say less car means more stoppability?????? WTF???? That's a can of death!!!! Mr. Leno got PAID big time on this one!!!

    Pathetic!!!

  • Top gear did a test.

    Smart Fortwo vs wall.

    Smart won.

  • Not really.

It was designed with that in mind. They knew that could happen, so they built it to be able to withstand it.

There really isn't a difference between that and bigger cars. You're getting stuck on size, not on how its built. Its body is basically an exoskeleton, and its very stong.

Whether you personally would feel safe is irrelevant. They ARE very, very safe.

  • Been wondering that too, I've seen different tests on these things and even though it is built to withstand impacts, they agreed that it's still no match against a a something something far larger, such as a pickup truck.

  • Try and avoid that accident in the first plae.

  • actually, there have been many many cases of crashes in smart cars in excess of 70 mph where not only were the passengers easily able to exit the car, but they were relatively unharmed. One crash, on the highway at 75 mph, into multiple trees and a road barrier, and involving significant airtime, left the arriving officer calling the morgue as soon as he saw what was left of the car. little did he know, the passenger already left the car without difficulty and was talking to witnesses, unharmed!

  • What the offset 40mph test between the Smart and the Mercedes C300, which mind you isn't a big car. The Smart did REALLY bad. Probably major head injuries and internal organ damage. C300 driver would have been unscathed.

  • lol u mean fifth gear ( crap programme)

  • did somebody drive a smart??? i did and its was fun...like a scooter

  • BS on that accident. *I* own a Smart and was in a 4 car accident. I opened the door and stepped out. Look up the crash tests on youtube. People can see how they actually perform.

  • I had a Opel Corsa, Bmw 318i but now i've got a smart fortwo and i't absolutely my favorite!

  • lol he makes a great point at 1:53

  • ima buy this car to pick up chicks

  • one of my friends has a smart and i really fear to ride in that car, safety=0

  • Comment removed

  • Who the h**l are you to judge the safety of a car? You know nothing about auto safety!

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the smart fortwo its highest rating of "Good" for front and side crash protection. In 2008, the NHTSA gave it four stars for driver frontal crash, five for driver side impact -- better than a BMW 5 series. It got four stars out of five in the Euro NCAPs Adult Occupant crash tests, putting it on par with some large sedans and SUVs. Feeling silly yet?

  • God, you're stupid

  • Why, because I use actual facts and test results to demonstrate what a moron you are? Because I am an engineer in the aerospace industry and actually understand that there is more to structural integrity and crash survivability than physical size? Or because I waste my time replying to morons like you on Youtube? Okay, you may have me on that last one.

  • You, an engineer? Yeah, right, i'm a rocket scientist myself.

  • Yes. I worked on the the Dawn probe which just finished its gravity assist slingshot around Mars. You can find me on NASA's web page about the team members.

What "rockets" have you worked on?

  • Dude, if you're so smart, why do you waste your time on you tube writing those comments? I usually post random sentences just to make dumb people mad. In your case I succeeded, so no need to reply. Really.

  • Weak. Really weak.

You didn't make me mad. It was funny, especially when you claimed to be a "rocket scientist."

I replied because you were perpetrating the myth that small cars are inherently unsafe. People need to start driving small, efficient vehicles - now. We don't have unlimited oil reserves. Global warming is a very real problem. So is air pollution.

Why you think that making people mad is the best use of your time (if you are sticking with that lame story)?

  • Listen, fucktard, i don't believe you're an engineer or whatever you claim to be. Shut the Fuck Up! It's You Tube, motherfucker, and Everyone, I mean, Everyone is free to say whatever is on their fuckin mind, SO SHUT THE FUCK UP, retard. You fuckin low life. What the fuck do you know about cars? You don't even have one so SHUT THE FUCK UP. Do not reply. You're a boring motherfucking no life asshole. I can say whatever I want, no need for you to correct me douchebag so SHUT THE FUCK UP.

  • It's funny to see you you lose it when confronted by one of your superiors.

  • "Listen, fucktard, i don't believe you're an engineer or whatever you claim to be."

That's because you're too stupid to use Google. I gave you everything needed.

"What the fuck do you know about cars?"

    Lots.

"You don't even have one so SHUT THE FUCK UP."

I have two smart cars, a Miata, a Yukon and 3 motorcycles you dickless little bitch!

  • haha, "one of your superiors", man, you really have a small dick, do you?

  • You're way too interested in other men's dicks.

  • I think you're just a broke ass motherfucker trying to look smart on you tube, bragging about stuff he doesn't own, making stupid points. Man, you really need some help, or your just plain stupid.

  • I think that you're just here because they shut down the myspace accounts you were using to stalk little boys.

Compared to you, I am smart -- but so is the average cow. I own every vehicle I listed. That you think listing such a modest collection of vehicles must be "bragging" really shows how sad your life is.

    "your just plain stupid"

If you're going to call someone "stupid," learn the difference between "your" and "you're," retard.

  • Can you speak my language? No? Well I can speak and write in 3 languages, and you can't even spell right your own. Goodbye mister, go back to your miserable life and your crappy collection of gay cars. Try to reply in my language if you're so smart. I know you can't, your small brain can't store more than few words.

  • My spelling is close to flawless, so chalk that up to your error.

You're an example of someone who speaks multiple languages but lacks basic reasoning abilities. You post derogatory crap about a car you know nothing about. Then instead of being a man and admitting that you were wrong, you throw a temper tantrum.

As to intelligence, I've completely owned you and you are reduced to whining about how I should stop picking on you because English isn't your only language.

  • By the way, "gay" is not an appropriate term to be used as an insult. Maybe in your backwards country homophobia is acceptable, but in the civilized world, it is not.

  • Oh, it's the old man again. You're 50 years old and you waste your time on you tube trying to prove you're smarter than me. Go live your last days by persecuting somebody else. Dumbass.

  • Actually, I'm 47, but I guess that's probably older than the average lifespan in your country.

Don't flatter yourself by thinking that anyone would use you as a yardstick for measuring intelligence.

Your comments about the safety of the smart fortwo were wrong. Stop being a pouty little turd about it. You fucked up. Just admit your mistake, and move on.

  • You dirty ol man, you just can't let go, do you? How's the weather in Florida?

  • Sure I could let it go and so could you. But I'm holding out hope that you'll do the right thing and just admit that you were wrong.

Not in Florida, unfortunately. I just got back to Virginia from California, where I was on a launch campaign at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

So, what do you say? Do you want to just admit that the smart is pretty safe after all? That's not asking much.

  • One of my friends has a smart and he had a crash. The car wrapped around him and they need to cut the door to pull him out. He suffered may injuries. He could die in that fuckin box, and you're telling me smart are safe? No fukin' way, I wouldn't wanna be in one during a crash.

  • They had to cut a plastic door panel to get him out? After so many messages, you suddenly bring up this never-before-mentioned accident involving a smart car? Odd...

I would not want to be in any vehicle during a crash, but the smart fortwo has proven to be very good at protecting its occupants. In one test, they ran one into a concrete barrier at 70mph and both doors opened and closed easily after the impact. It's not perfect (no car is), but it's far safer than many larger cars.

  • who said anything about a plastic panel? The door is metal, maybe the convertible version has more plastic in it. Anyway, it's different from this one in the video, the car was brought from italy ten years ago, different design and materials. And it was expensive at that time, he could buy a VW (wich is safer by the way)

  • All smart cars use/used plastic door panels. They are/were made in France by a division of Mercedes. Perhaps your friend's car was one of the non-smart lookalikes.

I had a 2002 VW Golf prior to buying the Smart. The IIHS gave it a score of "Acceptable" for structure/safety cage while the smart fortwo got a "Good."

Take a look at some of the crash test videos for the current smart. You will probably be impressed.

P.S. I much prefer this kind of discussion to our earlier exchange.

  • yeah, me too, but where's the fun of it if you can't insult someone by calling him "dickless bitch", right?

  • See, I may be an "old man," but I can be a pretty abusive one, too. ;)

I didn't lie, though. I own 2 smart cars, but am selling my '08 now that my built-to-order '09 came in. I'm impressed by the structural design of the current generation smart fortwo. For a side impact, I believe that it's safer than the vast majority of cars on the road. Frontal is very good -- better against other vehicles than immobile objects. ESP meant that there was not a hint of wheelspin in snow yesterday.

  • one of my neighbors has a 4 door smart and it looks very odd, seems to have more room but it's still the smallest in the parking lot. I don't know about the safety in that one. BTW, do you still have snow there? It's spring time in Europe.

  • The smart forfour was based on the Mitsubishi Colt and was phased out due to slow sales. Too conventional for most buyers.

It did well in crash tests, earning a four-star NCAP rating. Like all smarts, it had an almost race-car style of passenger compartment that is really strong. In most of the fortwo crash tests, the windshields don't even get broken!

P.S. It was a very late snow that hit us. We will be back to 62F (16C) next weekend.

  • what about the smart roadster? I seen some of those, they look like a cheap alternative to a bmw z8 or other similar sports car but seem very light and fragile.

  • More comparable to a Z4 or Miata than a Z8. I've not seen crash tests, but the low seats probably mean that it will do less well than a taller vehicle in a side-impact.

Light does not mean weak. F1 drivers survive horrible crashes at high speeds. Most passenger cars rely on their sheet metal to provide structural integrity. smart body panels are just decorative pieces hung on to a very strong chassis. They can be flimsy and the cars retains their strength.

  • yes someone who owns more than 1 smart-just like me!

  • this is kind of odd, i guess they came out in US after Canada, because we have had them here for like five years, shows you how much people pay attention to Canada, we've had them forever and u didnt even know it

  • they've been in europe since 1998

  • performance version would be awesome! But.. I suppose that would defeat the purpose..lol

  • Anyone have a copy of this without the crap audio?

  • Hey tso420, that looks like it may be from his website jaylenosgarage dotcom, but not sure.

  • Yes, its on Jay Leno's garage website under videos, then test drives.

  • for half a car, the feul efficiency isnt that great. im more optimistic about the EV/ED all electric smart though.

  • if i wanted something that seats two, i would get a motorcycle for half the price of the fortwo that destroys most cars on the road in acceleration and still gets 50 MPG.

  • a motorcycle is less safer and isnt always practical.

  • dude, are u going around all the smart Fortwo videos saying the same thing about buying a motorcycle?

  • wow he said it was a 4 cylinder? i thought these were 3.

  • they are 3. Maybe they forgot or just didn't realize it.

  • 2:56

  • Bad Audio

  • Jeeze. I have to blast up the volume just to hear him talk!

  • damn if a had 1 i would put a badass set of rims on it

  • I don't see the point in the fortwo. It doesn't get great gas mileage and isn't all that practical. I'd much rather have the Fiat 500 in here in the US than this POS.

  • Forgot to mention, it's ugly. Very ugly.

  • agree 100%. Mercedes is way overhyped and over priced. i'd taake the fiat 500 or the VW polo diesle blue with 78+ mpg on clean diesel. u dont compromise power, practicality or room. its cheaper and get better milage! i hate gimmicks like the smart car.

  • Priuses also make me angry due to their gimmick too. Not only do they do horrible things to the environment when they're made, but the VW TDI engines get better milage than them without the battery. I don't understand why VW diesel engines aren't more popular in the US.

  • prius! causes more damage to the enviornment in its total life cycle from production to disposal then a hummer.the batteries r only good for a specific number of cycles, they degrade as in a cell fone or a laptop,u'l keep buying batteries later on.its week n rated on the 10 worst used cars coz its unreliable above 100K miles.diesel use to b cheaper then gas bt the oil comp made it expensive.PPL r like sheep in the US,VW wont sell here.ppl dont know whts good, just wht the media shows nd celebs buy

  • Europeans: tiny cars, big brains, huge d!cks.

Americans: huge cars, small brains, tiny d!cks.

    Sorry, it's the truth.

  • Djan . it doesn't make sense. I guess small goes for small.

  • You posted this same exact comment on other videos. Not smart enough to come up with another insult or just too lazy? You don't make Europeans look any better with your comments, just give it up.

  • Wow, Europeans are so much smarter.

  • You know what 64? You do not understand the plight, of the current redneck, as you call it, situation. I am pretty damn good in reedin, rithmatic, and cyffering. Is this thread even alive?

  • Hey Dumb Asses, this car is pretty damn safe. And when did big truck, rednecks, start caring about safety ratings? Ya'll better have neck inflation devices for when you tip into a canal, ditch, or subdivision in Debary. hahahahha

  • in Usa this is a chick car, in europe this is a chick & metrosexual car, in taiwan this is a luxury car.

Ill have an EL Camino thanks

  • uBMJ8Yo8HLpAp1WdBtJtACg5

Troubled blonde here needing a caring man to make her feel better

    jbsqewF6puoKtdFauU9j2nunHgDc

  • Yep, this car is a rolling casket on wheels.

  • This car was first introduced in Taiwan 5 years ago. I would never buy one as they

are too small and a death box on the freeway.

In Taiwan, they are $35,000 USD. Here it is

    $13,000.

Why would anyone buy one ??

  • I agree.

  • To bad he has to keep his chin out the window

  • nice pics. just makes me sweat when i think bout it. lol

  • Make the smae video with better video quality and please don't make it sound like it's in a echo voice

  • 100km with 3,9 liters...get metric

  • bad sound, but nice video never the less

  • wtf u cant hear shit...thumbs down on quality!

  • why is the video being taped like a low voiced robot talking?

  • Bad audio. Sounded like it was recorded with a telephone.

The price is impressive, but the mileage isn't. For its size, I'm expecting a lot better than 33/41.

  • lol i thought the audio was jsut me.... i was look'n at all my audio sounds and volume

  • lol just get a 323 mazda. bout the same feul economy

  • i fuckn hate videos with shitty sound

  • the audio sounds like they recorded it in a tin box

  • wtf happened to the sound?

  • It's funny when people that know nothing about car safety talk about it like they're experts...just look at the crash test videos. The only bad thing about the Smart is the damn price.

  • Why would you assume anyone with differing opinions is speaking from either inexperience or ignorance, icedfun, but not say the same about your own opinions?

I live in Germany, home of Mercedes and the Smart, where this car is quickly gaining a bad reputation based on the growing evidence from accidents here. The result is a growing number, like myself, who would never consider a Smart for any reason.

Small cars are economical, but clearly not as safe as a larger vehicle.

  • As I said, ignorance.Smart is made in France, not Germany and it's not fully a Mercedes concept. And about the numbers of accidents don't forget the simple fact that in most deadly car crashes it wouldn't matter what car you'd have.If you don't like the smart, good for you, don't buy it but don't go out with your "how unsafe it is" propaganda...and never trust any numbers for any car considering the fatal crashes.

  • I never said where the Smart was manufactured, icedfun. However, it's marketed by Mercedes, a German company. Regardless, none of this (nor anything else you've said) changes the bad reputation this car is gaining.

If you want to believe otherwise, or want to believe a smaller car is as safe as a larger one, that's certainly your business. However, that alone doesn't support your propaganda about how comparatively safe the vehicle is, especially when simple common sense suggests otherwise.

  • Nothing beats an 18 wheeler. H1, H2, Escalade, the biggest and safest passenger vehicles would be totally crushed and destroyed by an 80,000 pound logging truck. Not even another logging truck would survive a head-on with that kind of mass behind it. Basically, what I'm saying is that there is nothing that can win in every scenario.

The safety of the Smart is also good in active features, like handling and braking. But the lack of mass will make a difference more often than not.

  • However, that doesn't matter. What really matters is that if you die in a horrible car accident, that you had a smile on your face, and some good tunes playing.

I like this car, just because I like it. If it wasn't safe, I'd probably still like it. Heck, I like the Yaris, and it sucks at safety unless you pay $3,000 for airbags. And I respect you for not liking it for whatever your reasoning. That just means I won't be competing with you for one.

  • What's wrong with the price? $11,590 isn't too bad.

  • Like all convertables, this smart is alot unsafer as the normal version. The safety beams, which make the smart so safe and rigid, can detach in a crash, basicly causing the car to "slap" in.

  • I would never drive a Smart, or any other small car for that matter. In an accident, I want a larger vehicle to keep any encroaching object as far from me as possible, with a comfortable crumple zone to absorb impact energy. No small car can do either of those. Thus, the driver of a larger car has a greater chance in an accident. Indeed, I've seen drivers of larger vehicles walk away, uninjured, from accidents at at 70mph or more on the autobahns here, while very few driving smaller cars do so.

  • True. People laud this car as having a good crash rating, but in every crash test I have seen the driver would have both his/her legs destroyed in a front end collision in this vehicle.

  • Another comment. Attention if you live in hot climates and must use A/C, you'll loose about 70% of the power, I know my SMART was like this. Maybe the US version is better. I would try it on a hot day with A/C switched on.

  • The US version is better. I test drove it in Vegas when they were here, and the AC was freezing cold. And it still felt pretty peppy. But I'm sure gas mileage didn't touch 50 mpg.

  • 8:10 look in the other car paperazi

  • i think the american dont have the Hot version of the smart.....the Brabus fortwo....my dad has a 2002 smart!

  • If you want to see the smart they SHOULD be selling, look up the smartuki. I would buy that! Small cars COULD be fun. Why shouldn't the smart? The MPG isn't that good, honda civics are close and haul way MORE people and stuff. Plus have a better warranty (24k/2 years stinks, which is what the smart has!) and there hondas. i.e. reliability and high resale. Nuf said. p.s.- Jay Leno is STILL an ass! : )

  • Funny, I'm a creative, and I want a bee, too. Actually, I want yellow with silver, and red interior. I'm just not sure if I want to pay the extra $175 for the silver. What model do you like, might I ask? I'm for the Passion model.

  • I'd like to get a green one, do u know if they come in green?

  • Not the 2008 model, sorry. Red, white, silver, yellow, black or blue body panels, and black or silver Tridion cell. You may be able to find an imported 2006 Pure or Passion in green.

  • if you hit a speedbump in that smart car, the smart car would be totaled. I can seriously see one of these things get stuck in a pothole.

  • I think a Smart ForTwo would hold up much better than a Peel P50, though, don't you?

  • It must be painful for Jay Leno,to drive a smart car.Because they are made in France,in the Lorraine region exactly.Near the German border.

  • new? i had one for almost five years. very unreliable. maybe they have made changes.

  • Yes, this one is new. Its the second generation Smart. THis is the U.S. spec one they are talking about.

  • Jay, thanks for sharing you thoughts and letting us take a peak inside your garage and auto hobby. You are definitey living the dream for us! Keep sharing those autos with us! God Speed.

  • who is us? do you think jay leno is reading your comments?

  • Why wouldn't he when I was visiting his show I was invited on stage with him he was funny joked and made fun of my cloths then patted me on the back in my ear said thanks for being a good sport. If he sees someone on the road in distress he stops to help just like I have done hundreds of times. If I were a celebrity this is the ideal way to chat this way I hear what they say for real and not what they say to JAYLO. He is a man about 6' tall with a great paying job and best hobby cars and bikes.

  • Jay you hear of the Aptera?

Up to 300 mpg and you can carry a passenger. Comes in electric and hybrid.

Top speed 90mph and is no slouch in acceleration.

Cost is a bit more but if you are a avid commuter you will make it up quick $30k hybrid slightly less $ electric.

Looks promising I want them to run them on veggie oil so when they get a viable veggie oil replacement that doesn't compete with food we will be ready to strike.

Because of California emissions standards they choosing gas.

  • Less in electric? Usually EVs cost a lot more. For example, the LivDASH, Hybrid Technology's version of the ForTwo, costs $43,000. Granted, it's a converted EV, but the EVs that Zap Motors makes are pricey, too. The Obvio Biodiesel was slated at $18,000, while the Obvio EV was $32,000.

Also, the Aptera is one really ugly car. Sorry, but it looks like something out of a 1950's Space Age movie. The idea is cool, though. Too bad it can't be distributed outside of California.

  • I have seen people fight at the pump just for the opportunity to feul post Katrina. Aptera would not be evryones car but as a commuter it can save lives not having to fight for oil in Arabia. The Aptera looks like it does b/c it is purely a CAD this car is not style it is pure function they claim it is comfortable to drive. I love the way it looks I would want to see some reflective pinstripes to make it more visible the car could be missed in a quick scan at a light by another motorists.

  • You're right. But it's not just the car, it's the people. I think people are just now starting to look at economy cars and fuel efficient transportation due to prices and current events. And now automakers are finally getting around to creating efficient vehicles. I personally have been looking at EVs, but they are so pricey. My personal choice right now is the ForTwo. However, again, Aptera isn't ready to be distributed outside of California. That is not good for the rest of us.

  • As an OTR driver I drive to work 1 to 3 times a month I have a waste not want not philosophy. A strong reason we got the Prius is my wife is hard on cars with electric motors to get the car rolling I figured this would reduce ICE engine ware it has worked so far and it has made her a better driver she tries to keep fuel economy within certain parameters economy= milder driver less ICE ware. Driving habits must change people are too aggressive and impolite this all for me attitude waste energy.

  • I see pu/trucks on hwy 30 going to work every day and they are commuters that never pull a load. Why I can't say but this is why I have my rides it is too expensive to insure/register a second vehicle as a work commuter takes too much time to make it worth your effort to have a secnd more efficient vehicle. Public transportation is conceptually ideal but never is practical for too many reasons to list.Alge oil is a promising future it can be created in the desert using land that has no other use.

  • When they get the algae oil production up and running we will have to change to an all diesel fleet something USA does its best to keep out the country claiming pollution is too extreme. The future car will be a diesel PEHV possible some solar too. Gas powered ICE cars will be history so why are we still producing them we need majority diesel. Prius should be 1 million diesel units sold so when the bio diesel is solved the infrastructure will be on cue ready for the change immediately.

  • I know EXACTLY what you mean. I feel pretty bad because I bought a minivan for my family with the intention of making frequent road trips. The person we intended to visit often ended up moving in with us, and now I drive 7 empty seats to work at 14 MPG. I need to change my situation, but at this moment, I can't afford to, especially since paying for gas is eating into my budget something fierce. I'm looking at buying a hybrid SUV for my wife (she needs a lot of cargo space), and a ForTwo for me.

  • Just FYI, the Algae fuel is supposedly compatible with current petrol engines, not diesel. You won't even need to modify the engine or fuel system. Google Sapphire Energy and see what they say. I think the problem will be manufacturing it in large quantities, but time will tell.

Personally, I'd like a PV system on my house that can power everything, and an EV in the garage that is charged by the PV system. That would be my ultimate setup. For road trips, we would use a hybrid SUV.

  • Solazyme tested a diesel it is a fuel oil that is extracted from the algae. It will be the future and even as global warming is full steam ahead they are still trying to produce jobs by producing things that are going to be obsolete when traditional fuels are extinct. First we need to get rid of all the overweight vehicles then we can motor safely in efficient cars.Eventually you will buy your car in parts first the EV later add the engine for long trips might rent a motor rather than a car.
