looks intresting but you can buy a computer with windows for the same but i like the idea of google making a operating system they but should make it better by making it possible to use other programs as well but thee good thing about this i think my 84 year old grandmother who has never even touched a computer in her life could learn how to use it so i think its simple to use a CHROMEBOOK =)
Holy shit, what a nerd.. hahahah. News reporter in the future I think. Just kidding though, I like the video. I like the chromebooks, but for the same price I can get an actual laptop with other stuff I want/need. If the chromebook had simple features, like letting us install microsoft office, for college students, itunes, for music, and skype, plus a few other programs, of course I would get it. It would slow its speeds a little bit, but w.e.
If it's decent and cheap enough i would get one. wish they would release the os so i could put it on my netbook to give it a go. running debian on there right now and it runs great but i'm looking for something more geared towards netbooks
Majority of the people only use their PC to go on the web, including myself..so if it is this affordable, it it a nice idea for most people. They just need to improve their google docs and for sure more people will buy 'em
Will be buying a Chromebook on day 1, mainly to explore the world of web apps that seem to be getting better all the time. Being forced to adapt sounds like fun.
I will definitely buy one. I need a laptop just surfing and lets face it cloudcomputing is the future of pcs and laptops. I am waiting now for onlive to be available in Europe. Imagine if google will put this service on their chromebooks. It will be the instant death of all consoles and gamer pcs. And I don't know exactly but if you've got a citrix accaunt you won't need a pc at all and I hope google will install a citrix reciever on their chromebooks.
I had an amazing idea !!!! : To save money, instead of turning the lights off when you record videos, try switching off your 2 monstrous 30 inch displays AT NIGHT when you leave them off for a show with your screensaves. I think it would be better that way. To save money AND the environment. What do you think ?
i would say even after years of techtv chriss pirillo still is an excellent, top quality presenter in front of the camera, so nicely integrated what is to be said regarding the product n all content well tied up..great chriss, this is exactly the stuff u r born to do
Many people buy expensive laptops and then only use them to surf the web. So the Chromebook is something that i can see becoming very popular in the future for these people.
How to make a Chromebook: Take your Windows XP / Vista / 7 on a netbook or laptop. Change your cursor to the black windows cursor. On Windows Vista / 7, change to Basic theme. Hide your desktop Icons. Make your wallpaper black. Hide your startbar. Set Google Chrome to startup, and remove all other startup programs. Then you're ready. When you start your netbook, the browser will pop up immeadetly and no other programs is slowing it down. Yup.
@TheHL2Guy its actualy stuff ripped off from both pc's and mac, apple design philosophy interms of keyboard layout n cursor and pc's dominance in market share, wud be intersting to see how google is going to pull this off.
@vloggingrapefruit entry level macbooks or macbook pro will do just fine against these chromebooks that are relatively new n not proven technology for the users, we shudnt ignore the fact that we all need working pc's and not just "internet browsers"
If it the build of one was better better than most low end laptops, then maybe I would consider one for school and when I'm sitting at home watching tv. If they're going to be just as clunky as any cheap laptop, then I'll just take the cheap laptop.
here's my thing: I could literally buy a cheap netbook, throw any old linux distro on it, set up Google Chrome to open full screen, and have the same experience and a HECK of a lot more available at my fingertips for less money, and a lot more flexibility. Not to mention, my computer can function ANYWHERE without the need for paying somebody $40/month because I have to be constantly connected to the internet. Come ON Google! You are all CRAZY. I personally think this will NEVER work.
I wonder what will happen if one rents the Chromebook out and after a month doesn't pay the rent? Will Google repo the netbook, remotely kill it? Will the person then be able to install the OS of his/her choice?
Okay you spend 400-500 Dollars on a Chromebook that is running Chrome OS. Chrome OS based on Gentoo (Ha not much of it if you ask me) is nothing more than Googles Web Browser. Everything on a Chromebook is cloud based. The Chromebooks even though they have a 16GB SSD no saving there its all on the cloud. All app based. Here is the kicker! Nop WiFi/Internet Access means no access to your data opr the apps. Enjoy the chromebook brick.
@MrSpore15 I don't hate laptops or netbooks. My hate is the Chrome OS. Seems nice when you have the net but when you are out and about and can not access the net in certain areas or during travels and trust me it happens. It would be nice to have more functionality in an OS other than the internet.
AT&T just introduced a datacap to its broadband service.
Once you pass their cap the customer will incurr extra fees. How long until other broadband providers follow suit? As for the cellphone companies you run the risk of your speed being throttled once you pass their data cap aswell.Oh I almost forgot the 3g service you must buy or the laptop becomes useless unless a wifi spot is found. The user ends up paying more money than the laptop is really worth.
I dont give a jack damn if EVERYONE on the planet tells me i HAVE to store my shit on the internet...I REFUSE....that's like thelocal cops demanding that i have to store my bed, my computer stuff, my tv andblu ray stuff OUT ON THE STREET hwen i have a fucking HOUSE to store that in. NO THANKS..." BROKEN PLANE" THE 4TH amendment to the constitution( the right to privacy is involved in that ftr) COMES FIRST. yall have fun letting your Cloud stored stuff getting hacked. Chrome book? Me? The long complicated answer is; "No".
As for getting one for my elderly parents? They are computer phobes no matter what flavor, size or shape. So renting a Chrome book in the long haul for me makes no sense. Just get a PC or Mac or Linux machine and be done with it. YEAH!!!! And you dont need to connect to the internet to us them. Can you say "Major Perk"? I knew you could :-)
Your videos have begun to take a dive in quality and quantity (with you in them) since about early 2010. I think that you should either go back to your principles of videos and live chatting that were before this shitty, advertised, shit-stain of a channel you call your own. Please go back or you will loose a lot of people to the same reasons that I have listed.
@kyral210 Different markets. Ubuntu is a full fledged Linux distribution. Chrome OS is a browser framework built on Linux where virtually everything is online making it potentially the most Lightweight "OS" available.
Never going to take off. After the recent Sony hack debacle, I think fewer folks are going to trust cloud computing or subscription software because one the hackers get into the system, you are messed up. Plus, people are old-fashioned, they like to own tangible product.
@vrooomuk Unfortunately for you cloud computing IS taking off regardless. Almost everything's going to the cloud nowadays. I'm not big on it. Not because of the trust issues, but because it's dependent on an i'net connection. Pretty much if you've lost your i'net, you've lost your computer.
I have been using CR-48 since it came out. It is nice for basic tasks, but that's about it. As far as paying $20 or $30 month or whatever the amount is, there are many other better options out there. One can buy a regular laptop for $300-400 install Chrome browser and use all the cloud services. Paying $20 month for a browser is going to be a hard sell.
Sure Chris, Chromebook will be about as successful as Google Wave was. A "dumb terminal" web browser box should cost $99 tops and if the selling point is simplicity for seniors ala the Jitterbug phone, it better have a dial-pad with 0 on it so grandpa can call up Chrome support and have them explain how to add add a bookmark. You can get an Acer netbook for as low as $250 and you think there's going to be enough suckers with Google fairy dust in their eyes to buy an overpriced 'Chromebook'?
@markbyrn These are genuine NETbooks, as that's all they are. I'm not too sure on the prices though as you point out, seeing as they're about as powerful as (though you get far better performance due to the light weight OS) most cheap netbooks on the market yet cost as much, despite running a free OS and not needing a Windows license.
Do not buy chromebook. You can't play PC games like Crysis 2 and Black Ops. It's just a useless piece of junk. Stick with what you have. Chromebook = No desktop only google chrome. -.-
@ENMAnumber1 I think the Chromebook is more for people (especially older) who don't care about games and just want to get online instantly. I mean, imagine how much easier it is for them just to turn on and INSTANTLY be connected to the web than a standard laptop. It also has 3G service. Plus if manufacturers decide to make it considerably cheaper than a laptop, we may have a winner.
@Toedoog Let me tell you something, the people who will buy chromebook is those who doesnt have a life and use facebook and twitter all day, i think it will only attract 20% of all the computer users.
@arproxc2 Those computers are on all day long because of a very simple reason. They make him money. The stream allows him to create revenue from the advertisers using it to sell their products and services. Also, putting Macs into sleep mode actually uses very little power. It uses more power to turn them off and boot them every day than it does to simply leave them on and sleep them when not being used.
@TalesOfWar he does not turn the MACs into sleep mode..he simply leave the screensaver for entertain the viewers at the live chat room in case he travel to somewhere..btw the MACs over there ain't make him money while he off to some where..he still can use iphone, macbooks for updates and even his employees....plus the admins at the live chat make him money either...
@ajamison3 of cuz you win...daa just saying he does not tell the truth...is that hard to understand the joke that i'm trying to do here? c'mon! i know it's fail so no comment needed ok jezz...
@arproxc2 It seems you, like many others are under the misconception that computers use a lot of power. Believe it or not they are a very small element of your power consumption. You realise that in general you use more power boiling a kettle than you do with your computer. As PCs and Macs (especially iMacs) progress they become more and more energy efficient with excellent power saving features. I am careful with my energy consumption cause i'm on a tight budget, but my computer is always on
Great idea, actually i do think it could be a winner if sold properly, e.g. simple terms. It is a market that Apple do not control (yet) so think due to the price and ease of use it is going to be a winner, ONLY IF google get the os right, all its online apps work and the hardware delivers, if it starts to go wrong chrome book is dead, non geeks want things that work, that is why apple do so well as most things they do work straight out the box. can you get one and review it please
I unsubscribed many many many months back now due to the fact the videos seemed to me to turn into silly novelty reviews of stuff rather than talking proper tech and what's new etc, it's really good to see things seem to be a bit more balanced again now and I just wanted to let you know I've subscribed again.
I think for the none power user it could be a great product. I even wrote a blog about the same thing after watching the Google IO 2011 Keynotes speech about it.
To sum it up: why would I pay for an extremely poor hardware + I would actually pay to give google the possibility to index ALL/EVERYTHING I DO , correlated with my LOCATION. To be honest Google should be the one who either gives this for free or pays you to have this laptop given the marketing information they get out of GOOGLE CHROME. About "grandma" and "grandpa", the same questions would arrise : " I forgot my wifi password" , "Wifi doesn't work" , etc.. I rather buy them an IPAD.
I don't understand all the complaining about the video quality.... the only thing essential in this video is the audio since all he is doing is talking about tech and not showing it.... let it go.
@mrJustin2678 YEAH! great idea! that way, instead of spending $1000 on an Alienware M11X, you can spend TWO thousand dollars on 2 WEAKER MACHINES! GREAT IDEA!!!
I have the cr 48 I would only buy one for fule retail prices I don't need to pay month to month for the same thing also I would only buy one for a secondary computer if only it was fast enough
The chrome book won't be for me Google sorry. I don't think it's gonna go far but I could be very wrong. I'm not a very big android fan cause I haven't really had a lot of luck with them. For some reason they alway crash with me and I go to my service provider and they say its normal
I fully expect the second batch of ChromeBook to be dirt cheap like 199$ cheap and I expect them out by next Christmas. It may well be what the Netbook was supposed to become. Would you buy a 199$ super portable laptop that does not store any data locally? Maybe.
You can easily spend a few hundred on a midrange used laptop, use a free operating system and do all that internet malarky in privacy for years. There is no such thing as "average user" or "power users" you fucking nazis.
It's ahead of it's time. Wifi doesn't have enough coverage to make it a viable option, unless you can have native apps and data stored on the device, i don't see it going far.
Its an interesting idea but when you want to play games or use skype can you do that on a chromebook? It's cool in theory. I just don't think we've quite got to "internet everywhere" world. But I can see Google having some success with this idea.
@free2rhyme214 There will be apps that you can use on it, similar to any android or iphone apps, only they won't have to be installed. Most likely they will have skype, if they do not already, as well as tons of games. Even angry birds is already on there. You can even try any of them now on their chrome browser.
Reasons i think Chrome OS is garbage: too much reliance on Cloud Storage/computing (from what i've seen), Notebook doesn't seem useful when away from internet connection, a whole OS within a chrome Browser window with tabs seems pretty closed to me, No gaming other than Flash based happening and i can't dual boot it with Windows ( from what i know).
i don't see this being a huge success unless but other people have different needs computer wise than i do so it might be just right for some.
@SkywardDragonKing exactly my thoughts..In the demo it says "You don't need to worry about running any behind the scenes programes to use the programmes...Hello any laptop you use needs to have at least antivirus, firewall and other stuff---as well as a wifi stuff installed...I bet the 3G subscription has a heft price tag....access the files updating then saving again can use up abit of bandwidth.
@YouTubingification sorry i was also wrong. like he said you can pay monthly for it, but thats for if you use it in a specific way (foreducation). anyways i dont think anyone will do that lol they will all just but the full thing at once in one shot
@YouTubingification cause its not monthly. only monthly thing is if you use the 3G Data on it which is a plan which makes sense like a cellphone. if you only use WiFi then you put like 300 for it and thats it. but because the whole system is a brower and nothing else. id get a Data plan ;)
it's obvious that in the future all people will be using is a pc with very week specs and all the content they use will be streamed directly form the internet. this includes video games. one example already exists today, the OnLive gaming service is exactly what I'm talking about, and so is google ChromeOS.
i personally think chrome book is a total joke. one example why i would never buy one is that a full blown operating system style computer is cheaper considering its power. go Linux and save even more. i have a 6 core system 16 gigs of ram 24 inch LED screen twin 1 tb drive twin gpus dual blue ray burners and its running Pardus KDE. the entire system i got brand new from HP for 700. as long as deals like that exist i will always laugh at things like the chrome book.
What's even more interesting is that it comes with a built in screen reader, THIS is a major accessibility barrier OVERCOME for STUDENTS who are blind, as well as employers wishing to hire employees who are blind. The reason they won't hire right now is because our software to make computers talk costs money. Not so with the Chrome book. Flip a switch and it talks. If you're interested, at log-in, type CTRL+Alt+Z. Plus zero maintenance is also nice, as some malware software hates screen readers.
I would consider getting one, it would be alot less expensive than buying a netbook fully customized from Dell for $1,000!!! But I will wait to see some reviews on it before I make my decision.
I definitely want one as I realize I basically live online and could use the benefits offered with them. I think for "the parents" it's verging on necessary at this point.
I don't that I would buy one, Chrome OS looked good before tablets came on the market, but now netbooks are getting killed by the ipad and android tablets. BTW, I have a Xoom Wifi
absolutely horrible quality video for doing a "what's tredning". I sure wouldn't have paid you for it. Horrible lighting, the video was shaking and your camera was out of focus...come on Chris you can do better than this.
@lovinhim4life - I was using an X-shot to shoot it, and the lighting was done on purpose if you bothered to actually watch the video instead of wasting your breath complaining. ;)

jaggedspikerespawn 9 months ago
Do not buy chromebook. You can't play PC games like Crysis 2 and Black Ops. It's just a useless piece of junk. Stick with what you have. Chromebook = No desktop only google chrome. -.-
ENMAnumber1 9 months ago
@ENMAnumber1 I think the Chromebook is more for people (especially older) who don't care about games and just want to get online instantly. I mean, imagine how much easier it is for them just to turn on and INSTANTLY be connected to the web than a standard laptop. It also has 3G service. Plus if manufacturers decide to make it considerably cheaper than a laptop, we may have a winner.
Toedoog 9 months ago
@Toedoog It's an awful awful deal. It's about as functional as a Chrome browser with a horrible Linux FM.
jaggedspikerespawn 9 months ago
@Toedoog Let me tell you something, the people who will buy chromebook is those who doesnt have a life and use facebook and twitter all day, i think it will only attract 20% of all the computer users.

arproxc2 9 months ago 115
@arproxc2 Those computers are on all day long because of a very simple reason. They make him money. The stream allows him to create revenue from the advertisers using it to sell their products and services. Also, putting Macs into sleep mode actually uses very little power. It uses more power to turn them off and boot them every day than it does to simply leave them on and sleep them when not being used.
TalesOfWar 9 months ago
@TalesOfWar he does not turn the MACs into sleep mode..he simply leave the screensaver for entertain the viewers at the live chat room in case he travel to somewhere..btw the MACs over there ain't make him money while he off to some where..he still can use iphone, macbooks for updates and even his employees....plus the admins at the live chat make him money either...
arproxc2 9 months ago
@arproxc2 Computers have low power modes, I would be willing to bet he makes more money with his computer on then he saves by turning it off

arproxc2 9 months ago
@arproxc2 It seems you, like many others are under the misconception that computers use a lot of power. Believe it or not they are a very small element of your power consumption. You realise that in general you use more power boiling a kettle than you do with your computer. As PCs and Macs (especially iMacs) progress they become more and more energy efficient with excellent power saving features. I am careful with my energy consumption cause i'm on a tight budget, but my computer is always on

BillaPunkSk8ter 9 months ago
Great idea, actually i do think it could be a winner if sold properly, e.g. simple terms. It is a market that Apple do not control (yet) so think due to the price and ease of use it is going to be a winner, ONLY IF google get the os right, all its online apps work and the hardware delivers, if it starts to go wrong chrome book is dead, non geeks want things that work, that is why apple do so well as most things they do work straight out the box. can you get one and review it please

I think for the none power user it could be a great product. I even wrote a blog about the same thing after watching the Google IO 2011 Keynotes speech about it.
jtwebman 9 months ago
To sum it up: why would I pay for an extremely poor hardware + I would actually pay to give google the possibility to index ALL/EVERYTHING I DO , correlated with my LOCATION. To be honest Google should be the one who either gives this for free or pays you to have this laptop given the marketing information they get out of GOOGLE CHROME. About "grandma" and "grandpa", the same questions would arrise : " I forgot my wifi password" , "Wifi doesn't work" , etc.. I rather buy them an IPAD.

YUPnNOPE 9 months ago
I fully expect the second batch of ChromeBook to be dirt cheap like 199$ cheap and I expect them out by next Christmas. It may well be what the Netbook was supposed to become. Would you buy a 199$ super portable laptop that does not store any data locally? Maybe.
TheRanblingjohnny 9 months ago
You can easily spend a few hundred on a midrange used laptop, use a free operating system and do all that internet malarky in privacy for years. There is no such thing as "average user" or "power users" you fucking nazis.
dfr343 9 months ago
It's ahead of it's time. Wifi doesn't have enough coverage to make it a viable option, unless you can have native apps and data stored on the device, i don't see it going far.

Its an interesting idea but when you want to play games or use skype can you do that on a chromebook? It's cool in theory. I just don't think we've quite got to "internet everywhere" world. But I can see Google having some success with this idea.
free2rhyme214 9 months ago

SkywardDragonKing 9 months ago
@SkywardDragonKing exactly my thoughts..In the demo it says "You don't need to worry about running any behind the scenes programes to use the programmes...Hello any laptop you use needs to have at least antivirus, firewall and other stuff---as well as a wifi stuff installed...I bet the 3G subscription has a heft price tag....access the files updating then saving again can use up abit of bandwidth.
I'll be staying with the Office range thanks..

i want a chromebook but i cant use it for my main computer or even any main use so it would sit in a corner
xROBERTxDAVISx 9 months ago
@YouTubingification cause its not monthly. only monthly thing is if you use the 3G Data on it which is a plan which makes sense like a cellphone. if you only use WiFi then you put like 300 for it and thats it. but because the whole system is a brower and nothing else. id get a Data plan ;)

i personally think chrome book is a total joke. one example why i would never buy one is that a full blown operating system style computer is cheaper considering its power. go Linux and save even more. i have a 6 core system 16 gigs of ram 24 inch LED screen twin 1 tb drive twin gpus dual blue ray burners and its running Pardus KDE. the entire system i got brand new from HP for 700. as long as deals like that exist i will always laugh at things like the chrome book.
