bought dear heather about 4 or 5 years ago and just coudn't get into - been a major leonard fan for a long time hes about all ive listened to for 12 years - its actually taken until now to be ready for this album, i have found though that although i mightn't like a certain song or group of songs eventually i will when the time or place is right its a bit weird really cause i never go on to dislike any

You could be right; not sure about the waitress, but he has always let you interpret songs as you wish. I have never heard Leonard Cohen put a definitive explanation on any of his songs - he invites personal interpretations, which I applaud. Some things should just hang in the air :o)

Well, some Cohen songs are stories (e.g. Story of Isaac), some are like figurative paintings (e.g. The Window) and some are like abstract art, as this is. It is about style, timing, musical artistry and vocal skill. I have tried to sing this song, but it is nearly impossible as it is so cleverly-crafted.
