  • omg I luv this show used to watch it all the time I was about 8 years old thanks youtube

  • would hyave been nice if they mentioned what was wrong with the brakes!

  • yaa it does not look any thing like it to i live about 50 min away in cape breton thats kellys mountin n i drive trucks its a 725 feet to top in about 4km a part of the world famous cabot trail. . it was prob the big stop in aulds cove in up the 125 i bet . found this video by a fluke haa.

  • and if buy some mircle they happened to get it in that gear and the driveline did not break most likely the clutch would spin apart from excess RPMS. but speaking from experience you would never get it into that gear.

  • Can you imagine the fear and frstration they must have had if they made one small mistake. This is what I call the true meaning of friendship.

  • i ,m just curios what caused the brakes to fail probaly they were out of ajustment that happend to me one time brakes needed to be ajusted i almost lost it that was so stupid thats the way it was back then they didnt inforce the laws back then compard to today

  • Hmm one would think the company would take better care of the truck breaks......I know some truckers at work and I will ask them about how can they tell if the breaks go out/ what will they do if the breaks go out!

  • Wooo,,, William Shatner? exelen en su epoca de presentador...

  • He should have hit the Jake Brakes on the way down the grade that would have slowed him down

  • i would let him get behind me and slow us both down with the other truck

  • My brother Andrew was born in 1984. I was about 1 1/2 at this time. I didn't even know he was going be born.

  • I rememberd seeing this one.

  • I have to say that out of all the segments I've uploaded, this one takes the cake for most comment arguments.

  • Take the cake? What does that mean?

  • @ZMommaL56 That means it surpasses all others.

  • OK. Did you read my comment about my brother being born in 1984?

  • Great story but, um, nothing to do with 911. I guess it was a dry time for professional rescues at the time they made this episode. That and, well, it really is a neat story.

  • @leananshae The show was mainly about rescues (both by professional rescuers and civilian heroes), despite the title. Even in the early episodes, not every story featured a 911 call.

  • Not much will happen by applying the spring maxi brakes that are properly adjusted. I've tried it. They only have small percentage of the stopping power of your service brakes. If your maxi brakes apply in traffic it will be a slow gradual stop on level ground and have nearly no affect on downgrades. It takes a minimum of 850HP-hr to control the descent of a truck at 70MPH (Brake failure means you have a deficit of 400HP). When running the rockies it is important to spec your truck with High HP

  • be sure you visually check your brakes are applied. Block the brake pedal at 90PSI and get out and look for proper stroke. If you got a slow loading governer chances are it is also leaking oil and will freeze in the lines.

  • Um, I am not a driver, but could you not put the semi in reverse and put the pedal to the medal? Would that work?

  • @battlekid786 I don't know anything about semi trucks, but at that speed, I'm thinking it would either break the transmission, or you wouldn't be able to shift gears in the first place.

  • no you gotta be stopped to do that i drive a semi i know.

  • i live in Canada but moved here from Europe. i used to go down 30% grades over ther with my semi.I often run the rock between Vancoover and Calgary and am amazed how many trucks start there decent down grades running to fast, then use there brakes to slow the truck all the way down the hill.the correct gear to be in is the one that holds your speed or slows you down on your jakes.THIS GUY WAS TRAVELING TO FAST IN THE WRONG GEAR

  • older trailers have no maxi brakes or automatic slack ajusters. even with automatic slack ajusters its not a substute for a proper pretrip inspection.

  • damn freightshaker!

  • Back then in 1984, trucks did not have automatic slack adjusters like they do today. I'd like to know why those brakes failed and the parking brake failed. Not all mountain tops have a brake check area. Monteagle, TN does and it's 45mph down that mountain on i-24. Both trucks may not have had engine retatders (jake brakes). I know all this being a truck driver. For safety sake, check your unit each day and when fueling at a truck stop.

  • The trailer is probably pre-1975. Many trucks did not have spring breaks before 1975. your engine brakes are not going to bring your truck to a complete stop. also some trucks don't have engine brakes. In some situations with a fully loaded truck, some grades are so steep and long that you will need both engine and air brakes to have complete control of your vehicle.

Another possibility is the trailer brakes could have been frozen. especially if your in Canada.

  • @aburocko i totally agree

  • how to fried out your brakes in 5 seconds! good it was worked

  • i drive semi..i guess u could say im still wet behind the ears as the say. about 1 1/2yrs. i would b scared to death if that ever happens to me.

  • they could engine brake as they are diesel

  • No blow out's so thats 47Tones + 33Tones and no blow out's? Hmmmmm

  • It's been mentioned before but why the lack of downshifting and jaking? The driver would have to be negligent if he managed to get to such a high speed going down a grade before realising that he couldn't downshift. Jakes can develop almost as much (braking) power as the engine can develop horsepower. even if it cause the engine to race, it'd slow the truck down considerably.

  • just picture if another truck or car was commin up the other way ooooooo nasty

  • good job

  • All's well that ends well. This driver was very lucky indeed, he was so lucky to have a friend as brave as this when he need one......

  • Anybody who has any experience in Heavy Truck driving knows that it couldn't have happened this way. Not saying that it didn't happen, It just didn't happen the way the show dramatized it. BULLSHIT!

  • Watch your language please, kids watch these videos. The show doesn't dramatize things, it's one reason I still love these episodes. They tell it as it happened.

  • I LOVE RESCUE 911

  • thats so much for putting that on here! That's been so many years ago, but I still remember seeing it on television! I had forgotten all about it! Kudos to the drivers. That's super. Just imagine if the flatbed hadn't decided to pass in the first place. The poor guy wouldn't have had a chance.

  • When did this show first air on tv

  • 1989

  • i've seen every thing apart from a runaway plane

  • they never said what caused it..

  • What a story, it's not very often you see selfless acts like that these days.

  • Yea, as soon as he said I have no brakes, I would have put a stop to the action right there. Not when you are going too fast.

Bet that guy checks his brakes every time he gets in the truck.

  • your stupid, its not a sedan

  • thats amazing

  • at first i thought he gur with the flatbed was the 1 without brakes

  • Too bad there wasnt a "runaway truck ramp" along side of the mountain!

  • You know nothing about trucks

  • The funny thing about this is i bet both companies complained about the damage to the trucks and both drivers probably got a preventable accident put on their records.

  • That wouldn't work since trucks don't have synchronized tranny's. Even if they did have a syncronized tranny, putting it in first gear would cause the drive axle to lock up.

Once the axle locked up, he would snap the drive line, probably knock out the air brake lines then he'd really be screwed and would go even faster like being in neutral (or he'd roll over or jack knife).

  • DANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CALLED PRE TRIP INSP.

  • awsome!!

  • man i used to watch rescue 911 all the time when it came on and ive been looking allover for this episode thx for posting you really brought back memories with this one and its ironic because ive been driving trucks for 8 years and i saw this episode when i was a little kid

  • well apparently thewong doesnt drive trucks...have u ever tried to put one in first gear at that speed..these gearboxs dont have syncros like ur car,u have to match ur engine speed to ur road speed for the gear u want to use

  • I lost my brakes my first time down loaded. I think the vine is straight compared to kelly's mountain. But even straight is a thrillin' ride when your rolling with your speedometer bouncing!

  • Very lucky he didn't go right over the edge , and he got stopped b4 he get to the last turn on kelly's moutain, alot of 18 wheelers didn't make that turn and they had breaks, there were alot of bad accident there

  • the mountain they show in this video is nothing compared to the really one they went down......i live 50mins away from the real one and there is one bad turn that you have to slow down to 20k/h to get around it safely

  • yes its the turn by the bible camp.

  • Maybe they should have tried that shit when they were going 30 instead of 60

  • when they were going that slow they were coming up the mountain he would have just rolled off backwards with no breaks they were going the slow when they crossed the top of the mountain but with curves that steep he would have just pushed that flatbed sideways and took them both out

  • Well I am sure they would of loved to of been going 30. but considering the one in the rear had no breaks and they were on a downgrade..

  • amazing drivers

  • Wow! glad that it turned out for the both of them... i found out i wasn't breathing until this was over! whew =)

  • Is that stuff for real or it was staged?

  • It's a true story, but it's a re-enactment.

  • i bet there was some interesting black marks after that

  • An other thing that could have been when he lost the breaks, is the breaks might be out of adjustment or the slack adjusters was malfuction.

  • Louie and Wayne were awesome! I loved how Wayne kept his cool during the whole thing, and Louie was awesome for getting him stopped. Alot of high elevations with steep downgrades have "runaway truck ramps" along side of the hills which are trails going upward into the hills along side of the road that are designed for situations like this one. They woulda came in handy on this mountain for these two guys.

  • he is a hero

  • OMG! I saw this episode many times. I didnt realize I was born on that day omg how weird.

  • If you use this skill of driving to help a run away truck .The truck with no brakes. You need to down shift the gears as the other truck uses it brakes to slow you down. You can use the jake brake to help slow the truck.the truck with brake on use your left foot for brake and the right foot to help down shift the gear at the same time use the jake brake.but only this people use this if they can shift without a cluch.

  • my heart was beating

  • Oh yes!

  • Happy ending. Always like seeing families getting close together.

  • The most likely cause for brake loss here was ether a air line came off or got worn through. that, or his brakes over heated, but i dont see how that could happen in that short of a distance.

Also, cars, pick-ups, SUVs all have hard-wire brakes (hand brake/emergency brake), so why dont semis, this has happened enough that you would think some one would have built a truck with an emergency brake that was connected to the pedal by cable and not air, right?

  • thats william shatner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The brake actuators (maxi's) would normally actuate into the park brake position if there is no air pressure to keep them in the "off" position. This'd fail however if the tension springs in the actuators had snapped from constant use.

But since there still appeared to be air pressure, the treddle valve at the brake pedal could have failed, or a relay valve could have too.

  • that was the longest life saving brake stop i ever seened

  • 萌え☆

  • If you have more axles, you have more brakes! You've obviously never driven a truck down a mountain. If your brakes over heat they will not work as well or a all. "he still had pressure" It's a re-enactment, not the real thing.

  • Just curious, but would it have helped the truck with no brakes to lock it in a low gear and shut the engine down to increase braking? Manual transmission, ya know? :) Glad the guy helped him out, this video had me worried someone wasnt going to make it.

  • You wouldn't be able to get it in low gear at that speed. He should have been in a lower gear to begin with.

  • agree dad told me same gear form bottom to top as top to bottom... i get it now

  • 45 tone v's 450hp, shutting the power off wont stop the motor the weight of the trailor unit is stronger than the engine compression

  • well the weight of the truck was to much and that is not legal you trucks can not go past 40 tons either way he pulled that out of his ass and saved that man that was a hero move and i have to give him respect because no one would do that for me

  • 49 tons for a 5 axle is pretty heavy. Maybe that's why he had no brakes left?

  • One lucky B

  • great show thanks for the share. 5*

  • there is no feeling like brake fade, sorta like stepping on a plum.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that about your Uncle Sonny, Weldaz1! That is heartbreaking! But I have heard of tourists using those emergency ramps to park their RV's, and have a picnic. People like that should get heavily fined, and if a trucker gets killed because of the negligence, then jail time for them!!! You don't park and picnic on emergency ramps!

  • Man, that's scary! I smoked all of my brakes somewhere downhill in W. Virginia. Truck had no engine brake. Thank God these guys were alright! Great video!

  • Thank you for the share, Newfieguy!!!

  • couldnt the guy with no brakes shift to a low gear and stop that way instead of useing the other guy to stop

  • shifting is based on rpm and speed if you can't slow down to like 3rd gear speed, say 10mph,you will never get into that gear, once your speed increases you can shift higher,or neutral thats it.

  • thx man but if he could shift into a now gear like on the spliter on the low side would he end up stoping b4 that 180 turn i m only 14 so i realy dont no a lot about the gears

  • maybe you could if you did'nt lie about your age.

  • realy im 14

  • I think you are.

  • i still don't get how that stopped the other truck

  • Skinny Bill Shatner with a bad toupee'.

  • i saw this years ago and was looking all over for it

    thanks for posting it

  • Whew!

  • guard rails ain't gonna stop a runaway semi truck, their main purpose is to help prevent a vehicle from drifting off the road, such as in the case of a fatigue impaired or inattentive driver

  • Aren't air brakes designed to stop anyway in case of failure?

  • yeah, but they only automatically engage if your air pressure drops below 25psi. I'm going to guess that because of the temperature there may have been some water that froze in the lines causing his brakes to freeze in the unlocked position, or prevented the air from actuation the brakes. That or some major mechanical problem... Usually on most semi's you can use just the trailer brakes with the dolly brake lever if your tractor brakes fade, or fail.

  • Don't forget these were trucks from the 1980's.

  • Yes they are but as I know (trust me) if your trailer brakes need adjustment (as mine did) they don't work..they will do as supposed to ie move to the drum for contact with the drum but can't apply enough friction to slow you down.. ie no braking will happen..my case lack of maintainence by my (ex) company.

  • A nightmare for all truckers..

  • #220 has two brother segments "Suicide mission" #106 and "Stuck accelerator" #601.

  • Nova Scotia has mountains? is it the appalachians? lol

  • Nice!!!!!.... perfect timing!!!

  • it looks bad

  • i bet that left some Nice skid marks!!

  • is that what you call good buddys???????

  • No not good buddys! lol!!!! You know what a good buddy is dont you? A good buddy is a guy who will go out, get a blow-job and bring you back one. No this was a good friend.

  • i was messin with ya.

  • I don't care if he was scared. If you are a good truck driver you do every thing in your power to stop a rig. Pumping your brakes to avoid a lock up can do a lot, besides in this case a few dozen feet is as good as a mile................ and by the why I am unsure of why your grandfather is revlent. Good for him I guess.

  • That was amazing! What a good job they did!

  • They're darn lucky the truck(s) didn't jacknife.

  • hey dis looks so much like Duel

  • It's like Duel 2

  • Very Good!

    I love the trucks!

    Very Good!

  • he could have went up the hills when he was at about 20-30..

  • I find it odd that a pro truck driver would let his brakes lock up like that.

  • this a great Real Story ! A nice view of their friendsheep wich has been created after this happening !

  • trucks scare the crap out of me

  • i think they meant that no actual 911 calls were made during this segment.

  • Remains me of the songs : Monteagle Mountain , by Johnny Cash. And Nitro Express , by Red Simpson .

  • He should have used the jake brake

  • Who is the host?

  • William Shatner

  • nice peterbilt 359 my favorite

  • that would be scary!

  • this was a great episode, but this didnt have anything to do with 911!!!!!

oh well.....amazing story none the less.

  • never mind

  • its better if they are standerd but not all of them are you can controll an automatic pretty good with the jake and regular brakes, but it is better to have a standerd, and dont ask a question that you dont know the awnsr to

  • you could give something a bit harder the awnser is yes

  • yea i have driven a rig

  • i can drive a truck and i have driven a truck and i have had about 6 years of experince with trucks now what do you have?

  • he coulda downshit and use the jakes.. seriously i drive trucks before...lol

  • Wow! Thanks... I remember watching that original episode!

  • first of its not a car. 5th gear and up theres not much engine braking and if you dont match engine speed to road speed you cant downshift and you will end up in neutral. I think if you shut of the engine you might not get if started again

  • They can't just shut the engine off that an't gonna do anything what you need to do is to shift down into a low gear and lower as you slow down.

  • WOW thats just the way it happened on CHIPs. Why didn't T.J. Hooker jump in and help? I got to have more power Scotty...she wont hold Captain she can't take anymore.....Dammit Jim I'm only a Dr. ROFL

  • why the hell he was pressing horn...haha funy

  • NO its not down shifting!!!!! it is a motor brake it like reverses the motor to slow the truck donw so you dont burn out your foot pedal brakes

  • justinshell01 "it like reverses the motor to slow the truck donw"

Doesnt it just vent the air at the end of compresion stroke out the cylinders so the air wont expand on the power stroke? So the energy from compressing the air is not returend as it expands on the power stroker.

  • they slow the truck down but do not stop it like if yur going down a mountain it helps slow the truck down so you dont burn out your brakes if you have ever heard that rippleing noise comeing from an 18 wheler that is the jakebrake.

  • Nah it's not just to help the truck slow the jakes will help you slow down but they also can be used to keep you at a certain speed as your coming down a steep grade or somthing.

  • not really the jakes will help you keep sorta slow but they wont hold a certain speed you still have to use your gears and brakes

  • No man you can, you can use it sorta like a cruise control my uncle uses it all the time coming down parleys canyon in utah.

  • OH so your uncle is a truck driver so you know every thing there is to know about truck driving dont you?

  • Nope i know what iv'e been taught by the people at england trucking and what my uncles taught me, that's what i know

  • it is not jaybrakes it is jakebrakes it is to help slow down semi trucks

  • i already said that

  • thank god someone isnt stupid here

  • why does he keep drifting into the other lane

  • long trailer got to be abel to make the turns

  • If he was driving a truck with a standard transmission, couldn't he use the clutch to shift it into a low gear?

  • i agree completely even if it was automatic which i dont think semi's are for safety reasons he could shift into first gear

  • shift into first gear, and blow the motor.

  • and also there are semi's with auto transmissions

  • he said in the video that he did try a lower gear but he was still picking up speed too much speed in too low of a gear and you blow the motor

  • What happened to his Maxi's?

  • He should of done his pretrip

  • No four way flashers, you finally come to a stop in the middle of the road and you get out blocking the road!
