  • I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but in the movie (TMP) you can hear ToS theme played in one scene. I believe it's after Spock arrives and Kirk wants him and Bones to have a meeting (or is it just him and Kirk?). Anyway, ToS theme is changed by Goldsmith to have a sort of ominous sound rather than the adventurous and almost playful feel the original theme had. As I own this soundtrack, I know this ToS variation by Goldsmith is not included. It must just be a short "cue".

  • @L0rdR4hl That's mostly because the few times the TOS cue is used in the movie it was performed by Courage himself, not Goldsmith. (Goldsmith felt it would be proper if Courage conducted those bits themselves) Usually it was played during captains logs. (Twice, as I recall)

  • @OpenMawProductions Ah, thanks for the clarification. I think you're right about it being played during the the captain's logs. Discussing this makes me want to watch the movie...NOW!

  • This film is the only one that has a real classical movie feel to it, complete with overture. Directed by Robert Wise, ('West side story', 'The Andromeda strain'). The delicate use of lighting is his trademark. Compare this film to the horrible glare that's in the latest (2009) film.

  • 7 people pick their feet in poughkeepsie

  • Having a Trek moment. What incredible music! And what beats the most beautiful version of the Enterprise leaving space dock?

  • I love this song, too! OMG, I'm bustin' out in Trekkieness all over!

  • Why didn't the music win Oscar?!

  • @qwuezalothus

I know, even The Muppet Movie lucked out that year.

  • 7 people who dislikes are Romulans.

  • @915nabi I normally hate these kinds of posts, but this one cracked me up :D

  • 1:07

  • Jerry Goldsmiths' score for this film........what more can really be said. Total epic masterpiece.

  • That is still one gorgeous starship.

  • I'm really 47. But I feel like I'm 16 again. Watching this movie for the very first time.

  • @sbergman27 "I feel...Young."

    FTFY :P

  • @CapyGuy And in need of a new pair of spectacles, IIRC. ;-)

  • @sbergman27 im 19 and feel the same nolstagia lol but i watched this for the first time when i was like 8 loved star trek since i was in kindergarten

  • Everytime I hear this song, I want to join the crew of the Enterprise and warp out to explore strange new worlds...

  • Funny how long it took to go from the incredible score from 1979 to another inspiring score in 2009.

  • @Potrimpo Are you really ignoring the work James Horner put in?

  • @Shinsengumi1324 Nope. In this journey, we also include James Horner's work along with Leonard Rosenman.

  • @Potrimpo And Cliff Eidleman.

  • Powerful and inspiring.

Jerry Goldsmith's theme is THE Star Trek theme! :)

  • They do not make soundtracks like this anymore......

  • They do not make soundtracks like this anymore.

  • They do not make soundtracks like this anymore.

  • This has to be the most incredible piece ever composed for any Star Trek movie. You can't get any closer to "perfect" that this. :)

Together with the scene, it inspired me to produce a CGI recreation of the "Leaving Drydock" sequence.

  • @troy2062: Personally, I slightly prefer the "The New Enterprise" piece. The intro for First Contact is good, but not quite so good as this.

  • @troy2062 you should listen to " stealing the enterprise"!!! gives me goosebumps everytime!

  • @kahlesstiberius

Absolutely! It's second on my list. :)

  • this ship was re designed completely so when they got to star trek III it must have been only 2 or so years old

  • @TheDEATHSTARIII Actually there was a large space of time in between TMP and WOK like 9 years I think(probably so they can make sense of the abrupt uniform change)

  • @waffleownage 3 years. 1979 to 1982

  • @vernhestand Ooooohhh I meant 9 years from the events of TMP, and WOK, not the movies themselves

  • one of the top 4 star trek tunes

  • Still my favorite scene. When the ship begins to power up and all the lights come on, The Enterprise showing her colors with pride. The deflector dish powers up and the ship begins to rumble with that always classic star trek vessel sound. Then she begins to move. Seeing this was amazing then, still is now.

  • man, 1979, i was 8 when i saw this film at the cinema! damn, im 39 now!! and it still gives me goosebumps!!

  • google ads suck

  • TNG music doesnt sound like this. This sounds like TNG music.

Doesnt matter which came first. What matters is the fasteners Ill be wearing on my collar for Capain Picard day.

  • i agree

  • Great piece of music. You can say what you want about the graphic quality of the late 1970's, but they sure as h.... knew how to combine music and imagery.

I can honestly say, that seeing the Enterprise in drydock while Scotty and Kirk moves towards and over it, and aswell as it leaves drydock, really gives my chills and make the hair in my neck rise. Absolutely fantastic combo of imagery and classic(sounding) music.

  • Combining music and inagery - a lost art form I'm afraid. In my opinion (apart from the opening music titles) alot of the subsequent Star Trek Spin offs lacked decent music. Remember the great music used for the Doomsday machine? We just seem to get dull sounding chords nowadays in any TV series - or many films (There are notable exceptions though). Modern editors are clueless and don't know how to match image with music.

  • @ewaf88

    Long story short

The Star Trek: Enterprise theme sucks nacelles

  • @RedDawnJensen

Dude, I couldn't agree with you more. I didn't like the Enterprise theme in JJ's Startrek.

  • @RedDawnJensen ... its been a long road getting from there to here!!!! lol!!!

  • the part that really gets me is around 0.37 just when shes getting ready to pull out, it must have been a little sign to the people who were watching this for the first time that it was back

  • 3:11 Is when the goose bumps really set in for me. I'm not sure why, but that last bit of the theme blows my mind. I remember when i first saw the movie as a kid, when the Enterprise charged passed Jupiter with that bit playing... I cant describe it :D

  • I love the ENTIRE soundtrack! I've actually played the trumpet part of this peice, and also the violin.

  • the bit at the end is the best really bringing the hype up for exploring space...but from now on the movie becomes really slow and even boring sometimes

  • This may be the single most beautiful shot in all the Star Trek movies. Not the best scene, but just the most beautiful shot.

I wish a had a poster of the Enterprise leaving the Earth just at sunrise for my wall.

  • yeah that would be realy cool! I just wish the blue light for the deflector dish was on. Not only does it create continuity errors for the rest of the movie, which I don't really care about honestly, but it just looks alot better with that blue light in my opinion. That would be an even sicker looking poster

  • The blue deflector represents the warp drive and since they haven't turned it on by this point in the movie its that tan color still compared to the rest of the movies the warp system is already on so its blue when they leave the solar system.

  • you made that up didnt you?

  • A Trekkie never lies, plus I actually studied the workings of these ships for some possible NASA advancements but no more on that. :)

  • well if you can make the next generation shuttle look anything like whats pictured above, you have my blessing

  • What continuity error? The blue dish, and the warp coils are grey because the wisdom for the FX was that if the enterprise wasnt doing warp, or functioning at warp power, they wouldnt glow. (The warp nacelles glow for most of the movie once they get it working because V'ger was traveling at Warp speed all the way to Earth, something people didnt quite catch.)

  • well yeah, but after Star Trek II (which only counts cause they reused all of this footage) you never see the grey light again, even when the ship was at impulse. When the engines were taken offline in the Mutara nebula, shouldn't the light have gone grey, by your theory. I understand about the nacelles, but now that you pointed it out, why would they be at warp when they were inside V'ger? Wouldn't V'ger's momentum carry them along with it, like a shuttle in the Enterprise's shuttlebay?

  • My best guess would be its orange until the deflector is brought to full power, and not nessacarily related to warp drive.

As far as the nacelles being blue inside of V'ger, keep in mind the size of v'ger was nearly a small solar system, it's very unlikely V'gers momentum would carry the enterprise at all (we're also assuming their was some kind of an atmosphere inside V'ger. Which as far as we're shown up until the enterprise gets to the inner chamber, there is none.

  • i believe the colour of the deflector is merely owing to the fact nothing has warmed up properly as all systems only just been engaged, after a few minutes everything running as it shuold and the deflector appears blue. Slight sub note, but on TSFS, when the enterprise emerges from space dock, (this will sound so amateurish), the bit above the impulse engines is white, and goes blue once they got running, as all systems warmed up

  • Viewer ahead.

  • I'm working on the Polar Lights Enterprise lighting kit from Trek Modeler while I listen to this. Inspiring!

  • to djallfiredup: this polar lights ship of urs were do they even sell more of those models? lol.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • yeh me too, incredible piece for this scene!

  • should use exact same piece in upcoming movie :)

  • but they won't coz they suck
