"Jazzy" type sounds are generally accomplished with a Les Paul (hollow body). Check out some Freddie Green. The interlude does nothing new chordally except an inversion of the V chord and the addition of a passing tone.

You call 6m, 4, 1, 5 a great progression? Pretty sure he stole half of that from the Baroque period. His voice is great - but all the songs are the same. In a decade of 'Teen Idols' - one must be different to be noticed.

Watch his videos...he takes the four building block chords (1, 4, 5, 6m) and just changes the order around. SOMETIMES, he throws a sus2 or sus4 in the chord for color. All the chords he uses are related and the progressions are far from original.
