Hi, Just a quick question. My mother is working in the UK as a police officer, but she wants a career change as a dump truck driver in Australia. How would she get into the job? Does she need a special license? like a MC or something?
In mining fir 22 yrs, during the boom we were being asked daily if we knew anyone who was interested in driiving a dump truck, hr license or not!!!! So we were getting scool teachers, barmaids, cops you name it. If you could pass a medical and daily breatho u were in!!!!! Needless to add, we had a lot of incidents and two deaths due to lack of experience and cowboy attitude.
I'd have to agree with the previous post, to get work at at WA mine it's not what you know, its WHO you know. Palm greasing is the nature of the game with agencies and HR & procurement with suppliers. Some of the bigger mining companies have woken up to this, and have employed forensic accountants. however they won't act as long as it doesn't affect the bottom line.
If you want to play the system learn try 2 find out which agency is providing labour services to a particular mine.
I had exactly the same idea as you. Did all the right courses, made myself as available as possible, even offered to put it in writing to offer a minimum term of service of two years, and what did I get? NOTHING. Unless you know someone of influence on a minesite, you're wasting your time. I tried for three years, and the closest I got was delivering cargo to minesites. Remember, you have to pee in a jar and have a complete bill of health
I am from Qld and already have my HR licence, but all I need to get to make myself more favourable to employers is getting the Generic Induction (Dual core/Metalliferous) ticket and possibly the SGS ticket (Trying to find one in Brisbane is another thing). I might look into doing a Dump Truck course as well considering the fact I am mostly keen into DT jobs than anything else.
@TCFan25 heya tc im also keen on dump truck work also at the mines and was wondering since its been a yr ago you posted here i was wondering have you got into the mining as yet? cos im also looking to get into it myself and wanna get all the info from any1 and anywhere online regarding mining work.
