This movie is a classic sad story with a haunting theme song sung by the velvet-voiced Nat King Cole. The storyline makes one ponder all the suffering of the people of South Vietnam over many decades. It is a story of battle hardened mercinaries, a man who is reluctant to love his son whom he had by a beautiful Vietnamese woman...who at the movie's end becomes a heroine. Hollywood will never make another movie like this. When I learned the movie was available on VHS tape, I had to have it..
How could I ever forget this movie??? I remember the scene when Nat King Cole or was it Gene Barry ?? .... stepped on one of those combat traps. It was Nat King Cole !!! just remembered, I could still remember the sweat and expression on his face trying to remove that oversiized nail spike that went through his heavy duty combat GI leather boots, Come to think of it, is that possible for a nail to go through the thickness of the soles of those boots....unless you jump into it with force?
@Cliffina1419 On top of that, I remember the song for very special reasons. A Senior Explorer Scout dedicated the song (of all songs} to a Freshman High School Girl Scout. who happens to have a crush on him. I was so thrilled, it wasn]t even a love song LOL
@Cliffina1419 The Chinese, and Vietnamese made "Pungie Stacks/Sticks" out of bamboo. Then they would dig a hole into the ground, and place the traps in the hole, and cover it or they would put it in a water bed. They would also dip the sticks in fecel matter as poison. Alot of Troops in Vietnam where injured by these booby traps. They can easily go through a sole of a Combat Boot. Watch "Green Berets" with John Wayne if you haven't. They show both types of "Pungie Sticks", and give defintions.
Im a Australian vietnam veteran, and believe me the spikes would go through a normal combat boot, thats why we were issued a new type of boot with steel plates in the soles of them.
