This is an example of amazing guitar playing at it's best, I play standard bluesy tunes and this has extremely strong blues roots but the way tommy plays it you can't reakky classify this as anything but awesome. Great vid thanks.
this is wat it would sound like if tommy and satriani played together tommy is just clearly better then any of those electris guitar players Steve vai, yngwie Malmsteen .....etc
It's pretty awesome to have a Metal kinda sound to guitar boogie as well as the distinguished blues sound Tommy always brings to this song
Although....of course.... I can't blame those who didn't like this video, seeing how the guest guitarist from MTV isn't at all original and that his style waaaayyyyy generic, he isn't moving from the 12th position, he's sloppy, and relies on speed waaaayyyy too much.
Not billion others...there are not so many guitarplayers, unless you are talking about in the universe, but then we would have to proof there is a live on other planets and they all look like Craig, But I guess I know what you mean :D
every guitarist can hide behind a lot of distortion, the truly great ones are still great with a clean sound ... and two or three of that bunch stand tall on a acoustic...
@renehofhuis Bullshit.. If you are a bad player it sounds like shit with distortion. You have to know how to fucking use it and Craig is awesome on the guitar.
@RabidCookie , let me ask you this: who is the better guitarist in that clip??
that graigcaracter is actually proof of mediocrity hiding behind a wall of fuzz.
and i am not talking about the eddie van halens, adrianvandenbergs and steve vai's...but your run of the mill thirtheen a dozen guitarist, myself included.
@renehofhuis That's a different statement now. :P There are dozens and dozens of fantastic acoustic players out there, same goes to those who use distortion. You are not only extremely unclear in your aim of that statement, but just plain wrong. Tommy is very endearing and appealing to multiple generations, hence his greatness. This other guy is obscure, but a 'wall of fuzz' he is not, nor is he "mediocre". He demonstrates quite decent skills despite standing in front of the virtuoso Tommy :)
@renehofhuis much truth in what you say, however i'd make the claim that to sound truly great with distortion is perhaps even more impressive, since, as you say, "every guitarist can hide behind distortion" and sound good. though i think somebody who can really channel the power with vibrato and control, someone like gary moore, etc, are no less a great musician than any other guitarist out there.
craig isnt relaxed enough, and has a habbit of playing fast instead of relaxing and taking it slow and steady. ive always learnt its not always about speed and making it sound nice
Well, I'll give you that one. Tommy holds it in a more relaxed and energy-economic way. But one should always hold it the way one feels is comfortable.
it's pretty cool to see Tommy play this on electric, I just wish he had done it by himself or with his brother, don't like the other guy guitar playing.
i dont think he's better than me... he is just fast nothing else... the most important thing is to play with soul... if someone can play hundred damn notes per second that doesn's mean he is good... on note with is soul is better then thousand notes without it!
Well this is Tommy...Since the death of the master and teacher Chet Atkins, he became the god of the semi-acoustic fingerstyler. For him it's all about rhythm and of course the independent "super-Thumb"!The clean, perfect and flawless sound..check out his dvd "Live at Sheldon,St. Louis" and you will be blown...
McLaughlin girns so much it looks like he is taking a painful shit, and what he is playing doesn't really sound good compared to tommy (but then again, only a few ppl can compare to him)
Magnificent performance (again). Guitar boogie is an excellent song; electric or acoustic... it doesnt really matter. Thank you for posting this video.
its clear brains wins over brawn always, or more precisely tommys intelligent playing over that shredding. im a shred fan but tommys playing is the epitome of how to master your guitar.
I'm not into McLachlan's playing at all. He's got no feel, he's overplaying to try to compensate for Tommy's brilliance... I can't get into shredder's, and this guys has even less soul in his playing than Steve Vai. Just an opinion, though.
Tommy can actually sing... Great footage! thanks for posting! This is awesome! We don't really see much of this stuff nowadays...darn kids...and their powerchords...fantastic!
Actually, I like his voice somehow, even when he sings - and he DOES sing sometimes. On the latest album by Tommy there is a nice cover he plays where he sings too and the result isn't too shabby :)
now when i look these videos of tommy on electric, i realise how much influence SRV done on him..

Of course Craig's not that great, but he's just jamming in E, having fun, playing along... it shows why we needed grunge at that time, though.

"Real way"? There is no "real" way. Playing the guitar is an art form, not a contest.

You mean fingerstyle with a flat-pick? If that's what you mean, then it's called hybrid-picking.
Torfinnmadssen 3 years ago
No, I mean flatpicking as he was doing.

Oh, you mean holding the flat-pick properly ^^
Well, I'll give you that one. Tommy holds it in a more relaxed and energy-economic way. But one should always hold it the way one feels is comfortable.
