No offense this documentary is really good but personally I would hate to have a life like that. It's so boring and it doesn't seem like she's done much with her life.
She's so lucky, she's got a West Highland Terrier, which I would love and I can't afford. My 9 year old daughter is in foster care becaused of my drinking. I have no partner, I feel at 43 my whole life has been a failure. If the cameras had followed me they would see a tail of doom and gloom.
I recently discovered the series. I was sad, as it progressed, to see all the women settle down and have children at such young ages. Maybe it's because only four females were chosen, would have loved to have seen one of them aspire for more.
@trashywilma Having children is not a bad thing at all. To simply say that she should have "aspired" for more devalues the conscious choice that she made. The point is not that a female chose to have children as much as an individual did.
I love how the boys' in the Up series have their careers focused on and for the girls it's all about whom they married and relationships and their BABIES!, not what they did on their own as human beings or anything.
I was born at the right time. I would also like to personally thank the ancestors for leaving England in the 1600s.

I never liked this series. I find it odd that ppl find it moving, because I find it invasive, shallow & exploitative.
It just isn't possible to condense a life in this way & not generalise, stereotype & judge. To me, it is voyeuristic & dishonest...despite the (not always) willing participation of the subjects.
Having my life chronicled in this way is absolutely the last thing I'd wish upon myself...or any viewer.
well seeing as how they have had the option of opting out of the experiment and so few have actually left tells me that you are in a pretty small minority.
It may be all those things (voyeuristic, etc), but people are narcissistic, and i'm sure many would like to have so many people take an interest in their petty lives. I think it's interesting from a sociological standpoint.
I don't think it is voyeuristic in that we don't get to glimpse say the nitty gritty of the participants sex lives as is common with other reality television programmes. Instead, the series chronicles the main changes in their lives like with career and marraige over a long period of time. In that sense you are right that it is too brief and superficial to convey anything but the most outwardly visible changes of the subjects.
Has anyone seen the other 7UP series that is newer? The kids turned 21 in 2004 or 2005. I believe there are 8 of them. Anyone know about it or where I can find it? I think the kids were in NY but Im not sure. I know they were in the US.
Sue seems very vibrant and intelligent in 49 Up and I'm quite glad that she's happy in her relationship. At the risk of seeming crass, she's also very good looking for middle age. It will be interesting to see her in 56 Up.
well, for me, I think she was wearing way too much makeup in the previous years (she looked so pale, it looked like she would pass out at any moment), but in 49up, her makeup was far more subtle.

God, what a banal person she turned out to be. Are all 49 year olds like this, or is it just the British?

These movies are virtually unknown in the States, but I now have the whole series in my Netflix queue. I am looking forward to seeing them all. :D
