"Comment removed". Indeed. I know what you wrote originally, tho. Some advice: try to watch the vid first, or, failing that, at least read the title properly :P

  • Dude Christianity was based on Hellenistic culture !

  • @zigsauer Partly, tho not wholly, and Epicureanism and Hellenism are not the same thing. :)

  • @BryanAJParry Check out this book "Joseph Yahuda - Hebrew is Greek" !

    Read this too Tetrapharmakos !

  • @BryanAJParry Well Epicureanism copes with the problems of mass urbanism ! And thats what christianity is , an urban phenomenon !

Well again not everybody in the empire is Greek haha you ned some "panem et circenses" too !

Like people from the west going to India India India haha woot and seek dose telegurus for Ilumination (Francis Dashw..d. whats his name again)

  • It is as much philosophy as it is fable.

It isn't the word of God.

If there is such an omnipotent force puppeteering the universe I can tell you enough that it wouldn't be the lame Judeo-Christian one.

You are a simpleton if you don't know that within the Bible there are philosophies.

  • or according to the philosophy of basketball michael jordan was the best player of all times, according to the "philosophy" of law its forbidden to kill otherwise there would be legal repercusions..yeah that is my point religion is not philosophy, first we must use words properly then we can make a point

  • religion is not philosophy

  • Yes... and your point is?

  • that u said yu wanted to compare to schools of philosophy, learn first then what is philosophy, and what religion, because if i use the word philosophy so loosely i could say: according to christian "philosophy" the world was inhabitted by only one man and one woman and a talking snake, and according to the "philosophy" of science it was not, and according to the philosophy of relativity e=mc2,

  • With respect, I think you're being a bit too clever for yourself. There is such a thing as Christian philosophy. Christianity is a religion, and religions have several elements, including a philosophy.

  • @BryanAJParry

philosophy= love for knowledge, (where thinking for oneself is encouraged) religion= a believe (where thinking for oneself is impossible)

  • @anthonycotillo I find that self-contradicting

  • i'd also love to see more of these

  • Cool! I'll get on it as soon as I can.

  • i seriously love this

  • I'm glad!!!

  • Excellent. You should do more of these in the same vein.

  • Hey Chris, glad you liked it! I held back making any more as they seemed a little dry. But I probably will do more at a later date. There's a bunch of interesting topics I could do on Christianity vs. Epicureanism e.g. duty to others, the gods, justice and so on. Not to mention bringing other philosophical systems into the fold.

Anyway, I thought the vid would be instructive, so glad you liked it.

  • It was, though the Bible (at least in the NT) doesn't seem to say all that much about friendship...even the passages you got from Gideon were rather vague. But I'm betting there's a lot more clear-cut comparisons to be made on the other subjects you've listed and more.

And, well, it's rather difficult *not* to make it dry. You say straightaway that you're just stating the passages alone, without personal commentary. :p

  • I think one of the things I like best about Epicureanism is the emphasis on self-sufficiency. There is a real focus on free-will and responsibility, too. However, this does not mean "loner-ism", as Epicurus said frendship was one of the greatest things. Epicureanism says that what you need is (relatively) easy to get, and that one can live heaven on earth, in effect. This contrasts starkly with Xianity which says we are useless and cannot do anythign with the Lord: a slavish philosophy.

  • My main feeling about these Biblical verses is that even the good stuff therein is ruined by the surrounding context (usually).
