Johnathan Pearce is definitly a lot better commentator than Battlebots's Bil Dywer and Tom Green. In fact, Bil and Tom were one of the main reseaons why Battlebots was taken off the air. They focused too much on commentary, and the bot buiders more than the robots themselves.

Well, for Battlebots's short fights; I think it's because some of the robots were designed to litterally tear eachother apart virtually in no time flat. Here's a short list of some of Battlebots's famous Robots:

@CervarianMusic Frankly, this fight is your answer. During the first few wars there weren't many really effective "direct attack" weapons- Razer and a couple of the better axe robots were about it. Armour was, at the time, secondary to speed and maneuverability (or in some cases, simply getting it to work). Robots with the power of Hypno-Disc simply didn't exist- and this fight was a wake-up call for all roboteers. Build it solid, or be reduced to a twisted wreck.
