  • 0:13 is that Eric Bana?

  • Not what I'm used to listen, and I love the original song but... I like this cover! :O

  • It sounds weird how it scitters between the rap beat and the original beat,

  • @sniper00342 I lol at people who actually allow themselves to get so worked up and angry that someones rendition of a song quite literally "destroys" it for them. It is such a decleration of narrow mindedness and an inability to percieve otheris visons. No imagion. Have fun saotaging your own music taste.

  • ill stick with redgum. this version is fucking shit. it takes the fucking heart out of the song as told by a real experience. you cant just take that and make that into hiphop there is no heart in this. it dosent shake your heart and mind to think of what pain was felt you feel nothing towards this song because you cant feel anything if i met these fuckwhits i would smash them for ruining song.

  • @sniper00342 its a shame that you can't see past your anger. The original artists - John Shuman supported The Herd with this. They liked this cover as do so many of us...and I agree with another poster, its important to bring this song to a new generation that have never heard it before..

  • @Leesidge everything was perfect in the first one there is no need to bring it up to new generation standards if they were to do anything like that shouldn't they base that on more of a modern conflict? hip hop music about the war in vietnam doesn't fit. its like listening to classical music and hearing rap it doesn't fit. Redgum had it perfect with the tone of the song. you cant kill the mood of the song and what point is reaches out it doesn't pull at your heart you feel little to nothing

  • was so good live at pyramid the other night.

  • What a great video. I am a big fan of the original but this is awesome. Love the Redgum sample near the end. This version shows respect for the diggers & for Redgum.

  • @33sirvo it wasn't a sample, he actually sang with them when recording this song - i'm sure

  • Love this Song, both Versions.

  • my ears bled listening to this after listening to the original literally

  • I just came here from the original, and I was just surprised.... wtf just happened?

  • @icbmmirv are you honestly going to result to grammar fixing? fuck man get outta your mums basement

  • @CaptainInsano64 Some else want to insult me now, ok fuck you too dickhead.

  • How about you guys just stop. The Herd did a cover of a great song, and they were SUPPORTED by the original artist when doing so. they introduced a new audience to the song and because of that, the original intent and story of the message has been passed on to a new generation who probably wouldn't even realise that we were in Vietnam. So just stop and stop disrespecting the original artist - John Shuman and Redgum, the thousand of Vets who are alive and dead, their families.

  • @Leesidge Well said!

  • I am an ex 90's serving member and i hate hip hop but this did bring a tear to my eye, especially the red gum contrast

  • to the people whe believe that the herd "fucked up" this song, you are idiots.

    sincerely a smart person.

  • @CaptainInsano64 Who is spelled with and o not a e, so your an idiot who can spell

  • @icbmmirv and 'your' is spelt "you're" when it's taking the place of "you are".

  • a modern interpretation of a true classic. well done guys. respect!!

  • its nice to know that John Schumann can rap :)

  • these rappa amerikana wannabes will never know what our boys went through. they may sing about with thanks to redgum. but they have no idea. noone bar the boys there know. all we can do is respect them, love them and thank them. not for being in a war we didnt want. no. for doing a job they were told to do that put them in harms way. for that reason alone we should embrace them.

  • @0Zolrender0 What? seriously your comment is absolute dribble. They are not claiming to know what it is to go to war, all they are doing is introducing a great song to a new generation. And the Herd are by no means even close to being "Amerikana waanabes" ( your spelling is horrible).

  • Adf Good blokes! raise my export to em

  • Whether or not this is a good cover, at the very least it may introduce the younger generations to what previous generations sacrificed and ANZAC day will long continue to be the day we all remember the fallen. If we forget we will repeat the same mistakes.

  • @geetuz coming from a younger generation this song has been introduced to me by the Herd, otherwise i never would of known of or heard this song. I like both the original and the cover. they are equal in my mind

  • @SonicSlaya agreed :-)

  • they did this on triple j

  • I just heard the original tonight on a mixed cd from a friend who passed away. It was her cd of anti-war songs. This is a great cover.

  • Gosh a lot of people are hating on this but honestly, i feel the video clip was very powerful. in this video clip we can SEE what the singer is literally going through

  • wtf

  • : ' (

  • you fucked a great song guys, congrats

  • @icbmmirv or introduced it to a generation that would not have known about it otherwise.

  • @ninjacouncilguild no, just ruined a great song with a powerful message

  • @ninjacouncilguild old fag detected... the message is still intact its just the medium that has changed. I dont like hip hip much myself but I really dont see how the destroyed the message at all. Could you explain how they destroyed it?

  • @icbmmirv How have the fucked a great song?? John Schumann has nothing but praise and admiration for their cover and he WROTE the song. What the Herd have done is brought a strong and powerful message to a new generation. So to you i say congrats on a fucked up comment

  • @stiffo12 go fuck yourself dickhead. Enjoy this crap you call music

  • @icbmmirv Eat a dick you pathetic mutt.

  • @holysoks1 that what I tell you dad when I fuck your mum

  • @icbmmirv How about you stick that insult in an envelope and mail it back to 2000 when it was good.

    Dick face.

  • @holysoks1 Dick face? it that the best you got? haven't you got a centerlink payment to go and collect?

  • @icbmmirv Coming from an intellect such as yours, this is funny.

Just get the fuck out you fucking imbecile.

  • @holysoks1 come on, can't you do better than that? I get better insults from 6 year olds. If your intellect is so high, let's see what you got.

  • i myself have past history and future im aussie"we are aussie" enjoy embrace LOVE ... mmmbeer

  • nice remake, well done the herd

  • Comment removed

  • Crap.

    Rubbish.

    Waste of sound and vision

  • this song gives me goose bumps every time i here it, "i can still see frank, a scream mess, of bleeding flesh, couldn't retrieve is legs" paints such a powerful picture of that situation.

  • This is a great song. Why do people on youtube have to trivialize it by arguing whether or not American rap is gay or not? Who gives a fuck. Listen to this song and then open up a book and learn something about the war

  • Respect for bringing this important song to a new generation that would have never heard it.

  • Aweful. I like good hip-hop - it carries on the tradition of good story telling - but this is not. Still some people like it - and maybe they'll seek out some decent music - like original Redgum.

  • beautiful cpver. I love the redgum version, and this does good justice to it. Quality work.

  • good to see the herd are making this available for the younger generations. never forget the ANZAC's!

  • Redgum version is better.

  • shit

  • Only Negroes can do rap...

  • @occasus123 Tell that to the first rappers- ancient Greek storytellers who travelled and rapped stories, like The Odyssey...

  • @Neithie Except that wasn't rap. Rap literally stands for Rhythmic American Poetry. Has absoulutely nothing to do with Ancient Greek Theatre

  • @Dosmosable wtf? Rhythmic American Poetry? Rapping started in Africa, long before hip hop, and yes, greeks did "rap" but it was more of a slow poetry. Get your facts straight before you start to claim a genre as your own

  • @flipingchip Picking up arguments from 7 months ago? get the fuck out of here

  • @Neithie Yeah Homer used to spit 16's like crazy,

  • @occasus123 get fucked you gay fuck! Australian hip hop is king you have no idea, commercial north American rap has got nothing!!

  • Australian rap music is so gay.

  • @AnimeRelated420 Sasuke is gay. They may not have naked chicks clinging to them as they dance around sparkling with diamond and gold, but at least they've got a message. American rap has turned 'gay'.

  • @AnimeRelated420 you make this assessment on one song you faggot

  • This remake is great, the intent and meaning of the song was retained and delivered in a way that younger generations can appreciate and relate to. Lest we forget.

  • this song makes me cry every time i hear it

  • 4:12 goosebumps D:

  • you cant improve on redgums song give it up looser

  • goosebumps at 3:09

  • @TheTallDarkTruth same D: when is changes into the original, i just get goosebumps everywhere D:

  • o...m...g.....

  • this is such a true song thousand of young men went and dyed and at school we barley learn about the vietnam war and i believe we should

  • As a returned Digger I found this version very respectful to the original. I teach new soldiers, Gen Y kids, who have no sense of history. From now on I'll show them this video version in the hope they get a sense of history. Thank you.

  • The messed up thing is lots teenagers these days dont care and respect war veterans. I respect Australian War Veterans a lot. I guess I do more cos I want to join the army when I am older.

  • this has the best the greatest clips for one of the best songs ever

  • Aussie Hip Hop is 100% better than American Hip Hop for sure!

  • Whoa, there. I love this, and Aussie Rap, but never forget where it came from, there are tons of awesome non mainstream rappers from the states.

  • Will Smith, 'n' stuff. I know.

  • Hahaha! The Fresh Prince... The pinnacle of hip hop.

  • the old dude in this video looks exactly like my programming professor...weird.

  • Holy christ. The main part with the rapping was good and a nice re-interpretation, but the part where it got to the Redgum version hits you like a ton of bricks.

  • This isn't as good as the real version. It's a three star song, maybe two and a half. They added some lyrics.

  • dont forget the aussie navys part, which i am a proud member of.

  • @cassius42 in a couple of years i will be going to the officers training school.

  • this is good, but the original is much much better - as always

  • this is my all time favorite song and it made such an impact on me that i decided to Reenact the 6RAR here in the states to honor the Australians who went to Vietnam. After allot of research i am finally getting close to finishing the kit and making my first event soon. I am proud to say that i reenact Australian now for WWI, WWII and VIETNAM. i could not be prouder to wear any other uniform.

  • My former landlord who is now a great personal friend was a machine gunner with the heavy weapons platoon of Support Company, 2RAR in 1970/71. Really proud of him, he's a fantastic man and I feel so privileged to know him. He's a living national treasure in my eyes. Some of the stories his wife passed on are incredible. One day he was on a section patrol when they came across a company of VC/NVA. He was so petrified his corporal had to yell in his ear to get him moving.

  • that video, wow. At the end with all the soldiers, it really gives you an awakening on what happened.

    Lest we forget

  • Thanks for posting mate, we studied this in History this year. Every time I watch it I get the same feeling of sorrow for those who were sent to Vietnam. The clips make me want to cry, and I love the bit at the end when the guy is singing in the mirror - so sad! This video is really well done, I enjoyed studying it and wish I could somehow commemorate the veterans myself one day.

  • such a confused old man

    haha

    mad song (Y)

  • My Grandpa said that the Aussies were the craziest and bravest soldiers he met over in Nam

  • great bloke.

  • why wreck the original with this shit

  • The part with Redgum (The Original band) at the end was recorded by the original band members in The Herd's recording studio because they were so impressed with the remake of this song.

  • Because there is a lesson to be learned from the original and "This shit" serves as a means of updating the teaching of that lesson to a new generation.

  • This is a powerful video.

  • this clip is pretty moving wit the old soldier reliving it all

  • So much power in one song. Makes u feel for the people that died to allow us to be who we are today!

RIP. to all ANZAC's that have died!

  • Whether you regard this a well done cover or not is irrelevant. What it did succeed in doing was open a generations eyes to something, that until this release, they had not been confronted with on a commerical level. ANZAC day turnouts are up and it's largely due to tributes such as these from the younger generation of which I am a part of. Brings me to tears everytime whether it's the original or the HERD's version. Stop squabbling and remember our vets.

  • I was going to say the same thing myself though you said it much better.

It really puts out an important message (for want of a better word) to a younger audience. My younger sister for example, really likes this song and is moved by it; which is something I am surprised by.

  • There is only one person with the right to judge this song: John Schumann. Before you criticise this song on any level beyond technical crit or personal preference, learn what Schumann says about it.

Personally, I think this reworking is brilliant. I prefer the original, but this still nails me to the wall every time.

Sad to see comments here glorifying war, when the point of this song is the horror of war. War is occasionally necessary, but most wars (like Vietnam) are senseless atrocities.

  • whoa brought chills down my spine, that video and song was great.

  • love it and good luck to my bro and everyone else in iraq keep up the good work boys

  • fuck all you cunts insulting the cover you could not be more unpatriotic and disgraceful respect it for what it is, it was handled tastefully with the right intentions and because its hip hop doesnt mean it has no soul or emotion

so stfu and go back to pretending to be patriotic

  • And sadly, your expletive riddled rant, whilst well intentioned, is handled in poor taste.

Anyone can swear. If you need to emphasise your point, use CAPS LOCK.

  • What is it with you people and saying were not americans.. The fact this song is hiphop doesn't mean anybody is trying to be american!.. If that was the case we might as well just diss everybody for being american, rock and even country music originated in america. Fair enough if you dont like the song, but use some common sense..

  • Careful there, crazeyedy29...we Yanks have a few good emotional Vietnam songs of our own. Check out Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon" as just one good example.

  • this song is awsome any 1 who doesnt like the origanal or this version cant call them selves aussie!

  • Why can't they? Part of being Australian is the privalige to hold and express your own opinion.

  • fuck you dingoboy this song is mad

  • yer if u dont like the song dont fucking comment asshole

    go fuck yourself DINGOBOY71

  • I thought the same thing when i first listened to it. It just doesn't have the soul that redgum did, i think you need to know and talk with a vet to get a real idea of it. After listening to it a couple of times it did grow on me but like i said it just doen't have the soul.

  • a great song

  • Anything that gets the feeling of the original song out to a whole new generation is a good thing

  • I love this song, The first one had a lot more heart, but this is getting this song to younger people. I tyhink the worst thing is when the troops came back from the war they were spat on

  • Sadly, the anti-war movement was infiltrated and aggitated by Trotskyites. The same rat bags infiltrate protests the world over, even today.

To picket, let alone spit on, returning Vets was an absolute disgrace and I hope there is a burning pit of shame in the stomachs of every scum bag that did that.

  • I hate the war in Iraq, can understand the reason for Afghanastan, BUT the troops on the ground are there we/you are not. They deserve nothing but a heros welcome. Hate the war not the TROOPS. ANZAC day will remember you eventually seems similar to Veitnam as far as publis interest goes. Just not as many people willing to stand up for what they believe in. I am guilty as well.

  • @TrevorSnake so true

  • @TrevorSnake People put the blame on the wrong target. It wasn't the soldier's fault.

  • @TrevorSnake no one ever owns up to it as well, gutless.

  • hey shut the fuck up this is a good song its doesnt matter who sings it

  • mate, go fuck ya self. as the bloke a little down sed, its not as good as the original but it shows the song to a younger generation, my generation. I would not have heard the original if i didnt hear this version. and another point at least these blokes are showing respect in their own way. and wat have you done that makes you good enough to give the herd shit. fucking wanker

  • hmm lets see ive been in the army.

  • I am sorry but this does not show respect and when we get here as a nation we may as well give up. I know we must be open to new ideas but there are still some things in this world that are to be left alone.

  • I believe it shows the utmost respect. Whilst it doesn't stay true to the lyrics of the original, it stays true to the message. To me, that makes this a fantastic "cover."

  • how is this 'rap crap' its just a hip hop band paying tribute to a great song and the orignal artist even thinks they did a better job. Maybe u should apprciate for what it is narrow minded fucks

  • He also did a cameo 3:10 minutes in. I love both versions.

  • Typical bogan. I suppose the Southern Cross tattooed on you pasty, pimpled arse makes you a real patriot?

  • crap and tripple crap

you have turned a great song into rap crap

  • Ugh, this sucks.

  • not as good as the original one

  • LOL. This sounds like a 'BARKING M16'!!! I prefer the original REDGUM version but if this is the way to bring the song to the newer generation, so be it. Good effort.

  • FAIL

  • schumann said the herd did a better job of the song than he did. mad respect for the war vets.

  • I don't normally like hiphop, but I'll make an exception here, because this song is awesome. I can't believe that is actually the video clip for both songs....Please explain?

  • no this is the clip for the Herd's version only.

    The original is /watch?v=n7TXBuVUQJw

  • I stand corrected, I've listened again, and I have changed my mind. I loved the original and I think I wasn't listening with a new ear to this.

  • I dunno but adding in your own lines to someone elses song of the war seems basically bad taste.

Also this i rubbish. Lisyen the the original.

  • And if you could actually spell right then that would be a good start to representing my country.

  • that's typing, not spelling.

  • hes not representing your country, hes a Brit *rolls eyes* (lol jk)

  • yup, but am an Aussie permanent resident too.

  • Bad taste?

John Schumann (the old man in the clip) not only sings in this song but appears in the clip. Obviously he has not only approved of the remake, but embraced it, and any subsequent addition of lines. If you think its "bad taste" then you obviously do not appreciate the spirit in which Schumann wrote this song.

Its fair enough what your saying, but you must respect the fact that Schumann has allowed this version.

  • fair enough, but just because Schumann approved it, and there's little he can do to stop it anyhow, doesn't make it much chop.

I still think it is bad taste to Pimp up a war song.

Imagine the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda with every other line being, "Uh huh, yeah, props! One time!"

It would be diminished. Just like here.

Hey ho, each to their own mate.

  • LOL, ok?? "pimp up"?

you obviously dont know who the Herd, or Elefant Traks are. mate, theres nothing "pimp" about aussie hip hop, or the herd. if you bother to listen to the Herd's other works, youd discover what their style is. they are a cross between aussie hip hop and alternate genre, you only have to listen to the instruments they use. yes THEY. the herd is a group of artists, 11 of them no i think. theyre not just a couple of mcs and a DJ.

  • **...now i think...

  • not only did john schumann approve this song, but he actually approached the herd and asked them to do this song, so mr battleship shut the fuck up, the herd dont say "uh, props" or any of that shit coz they're aussie emcees not gangstas

  • didnt know that.

  • It's never, I disagree, it's always "shut the fuck up",

from the safety of the the internet

    Get some manners.

  • lol what?

  • The idea of a cover is to interpret an existing work. That is what they do.

The cadence of the original song doesn't fit with their chosen genre and the adaptation does so without sacrificing the original intended message of the original author.

My honest opinion is that it actually adds to the message.

  • is the old man character redgum?

  • Hell yeah, ANZAC pride. I don't really like the herd, but this is a masterpiece...

  • I was a bit put off by the thought of a hip hop remake, but it grows on you. Nice work.

  • Very Good. While I thought the original was better, but that's just coz hiphop is not my taste. I thought it was a fitting tribute.

  • The original version was good but the way The Herd have produced this track, especially with the video combo, keeps the entesity of the track and makes me proud to be australian!

  • it makes me think what im going to be saying and thinking when i am that age looking back on my tours and general infantry service, I think that the video does reflect that while it was hell he is still proud of what he did

  • Excellent cover of an excellent classic song of a time in our history that is too easily forgoten about! Great film clip too, I herd the herd perforf this for the first time on "Like a Version" on Tripple J and have liked it ever since even though I have never been a huge fan of the Herd. There slightly ignorant political views in some there other songs has always concerned me, but more heart felt stuff like this and I may be converted.

  • I love it. ive seen them do it live and it still packs heaps of emotion. good work

  • I like the original version the best

  • yeah i'm actually joinin the army, this song always motivates me in the tough life ahead

  • Its "The Herd" not "Herds" Dope song, dont sleep

  • This is so the new generation doesn't forget

  • i'm a returned serviceman, good cover lads.

  • the original song had more of an emotional feel but this one is good and the video clip is nice..Didn't know this existed till my english teacher showed my class
